This CD contains some of the few Bulgarian recordings of the celebrated opera singer. It is a combination of performances made at different times and with different orchestras. Kabaivanska has made a selection of crown performances in her artistic career. It is a fact well-known to opera-music fans that after Maria Callas she is considered to be the greatest interpreter of the part of Tosca, as well as those of Adriana Lecouvreur, Mimi from "La Boheme", Elisabeth from "Don Carlos". Thus the CD acquires the value of a retrospective registration of Kabaivanska's vocal style in a later stage of her artistic career.

Gideon Waldrop (b. 1919, Texas) is presented in this release with five compositions created in the decades after World War II: Symphony No. 1 (1951), Suite for Orchestra from the Southwest (1964), Songs of the Southwest for Baritone and Chamber Orchestra (1983), Prelude and Fugue (1963), and Pressures (1955). In the compositions one can clearly trace the influence of the American folklore and, according to the composer's words, that of the Mexican songs, Waldrop's skills in orchestration, as well as the combination of primitive melodies and interesting modal patterns, the counter-pointing European techniques and his mastery in building up complicated polyphonic figures.

Georgi Arnaoudov is a composer who stood out in the generation which entered Bulgarian musical life in the 1980s. His works are marked by originality evident in both the manner of structuring and the characteristic features of sound-combinations, modes and timbres. He is the author of symphonies, concerto opuses, ballets and a number of chamber-instrumental works. What interests him most are the deep roots of Bulgarian folk music, Gregorian religious art, as well as the ancient Asian cultures. For his CD he has selected some of his most popular compositions, which have been included in the repertoire of recording companies and a number of Bulgarian instrumentalists. Titles like "The Circle of Rites", "Ritual" suggest the author's ambition to give new musical meaning to ancient messages, carried on throughout the centuries. Each of the compositions begins in a peculiar way, from one tone only; then it becomes a thread, which - being drawn out, twisted and re-twisted - turns the initial "silence" and inaction into an exciting musical flow and ends into the "silence" from the beginning again.

The famous Bulgarian composer Jules Levy has adapted for voice and piano several Sephardic songs (the songs of the Jews who lived in Spain and Portugal). Banished from there in the 15th century they settled in different parts of Eastern Europe, in particular in Bulgaria. Jules Levy, a Sephardic Jew himself, has transformed skillfully the melodies, lyrical and dancing in character, into wonderful musical creations. These are songs of love, youth, beauty, songs which have been carried from generation to generation through the centuries.
The programme includes nineteen songs, performed in Ladino. Each of them is memorable because of the lovely interpretation of the two performers, and the taste and mastership with which they recreate the character and the moods that are mostly amorous-nostalgic but also lively and vivacious. This CD documents part of an original folk legacy.

GROZDANA - Trakia Folk Ensemble - Plovdiv

During the 1950s, musical life in Bulgaria witnessed a phenomenon which opened up a new stage in the development of Bulgarian folk music: the establishment of the first State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances "Philip Koutev". The phenomenon was quick to win numerous admirers and followers. Similar ensembles uniting the talent of numerous singers and instrumentalists, composers, conductors and choreographers cropped up throughout Bulgaria. And when the art of these ensembles had reached its both national and international triumph, the Trakia Folk Ensemble - Plovdiv emerged, to show that there exist other ways and means of presenting the Bulgarian folklore. Its founders, Prof. Kiril Djenev (one of the leading choreographers in Bulgaria) and Stefan Mutafchiev (a talented composer of non-traditional musical ideas), laid their hopes on the young (the average age of the company is 22 years), the professional training of each of the performers and, first and foremost, on syncretism, the main characteristic of traditional art. Their first stage appearance literally set the audience on fire! Everyone from the ensemble sang, played a musical instrument and danced on the stage. The audience witnessed a true folk show. And it has been so for 25 years now! Although the directors and conductors of the ensemble have changed, the ensemble's young and innovative spirit has been preserved.
The programme of this jubilee album released by Gega New is diverse and selected with much taste. It varies from the deep tribute in respect to Stefan Moutafchiev, one of Trakia Ensemble's founders, through the works of the already established composers Kosta Kolev and Krassimir Kyurkchiiski, to the music of the younger Todor Prashtakov, Tsvetan Tsvetkov, among others. The ensemble's directors together with soloists, choir and orchestra represent with mastery and inspiration the different folk regions of the country (Thrace and Strandja, the Rhodope Mountains, the Shoppe region, the Pirin region and North Bulgaria).

Director and choreographer: Daniela Djeneva
Conductor of the choir: Dimiter Hristov
Conductor of the orchestra: Tsvetan Tsvetkov

Soloists: Maria Tsvetkova, Stanka Argirova-Kurshumova, Peter Zahariev (tamboura), Mitko Popov (tarambuka and tupan), Ulyana Raikova, Rumyana Angelova, Peter Kostadinov (bagpipe), Zlatka Stefanova, Boika Sekeranova, Temenuga Mincheva

"Extraordinary finesse of performance", "crystal sound", "refined manner of sound production", "artistic freedom", "stable intonation" - these are only part of the definitions that Bulgarian and foreign critics give to the interpretations of the choir. The Flemish critic Hugo Heugebard exclaims: "… Ms. Spassova's conducting is exciting and masterful … from a little song, she creates a masterpiece…"
Founded in 1980, the Academic Folk Choir gained fame in a relatively short period of time with its high artistic level and highly professional approach to interpretation. The choir has been at the forefront of the "new folklore wave", a phenomenon characterized by folk intonations, asymmetrical rhythms and enrichment of musical folklore with contemporary expressive means. The achievements of the choir are due mainly to its conductor professor Vassilka Spassova and her assistants. Mrs. Spassova is respected both as a conductor and lecturer. Her lectures on the problems of Bulgarian choral art and arrangement of folk songs have evoked great interest in a number of prestigious music institutions and universities in Poland, the USA, Switzerland, Sweden, etc. Many works have been written especially for the choir. A part of them are included in the present release: Mehmetyo, My Love by Ivan Spassov, Pilentse pee by Krassimir Kyurkchiyski, The Sun Sets by Nikolai Stoikov, Listni se goro by Stefan Moutafchiev, and many others, a real example of great professionalism.

BULGARIAN FOLK SONGS AND DANCES

The present programme is the first of a series of releases initiated by Gega New with the ambition to reveal the talent of some of Bulgaria's most famous folk musicians. Without aiming to go in chronological order, Gega New intends to present different folk artists and composers who have marked a path in the development of this genre of music. The first релеасе features recordings of Petko Radev, clarinet, and Petko Dachev, accordion.
Petko Radev founded the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra in the 1970s. It made an immediate impression on listeners with its new musical sound, new type of improvisations and fascinating introductions. Even though he has an academic musical background, having graduated from the Bulgarian Academy of Music, Petko Radev applies the best devices of the Thracian instrumental tradition in his performing. Making use of his profound classical training, he transfers to the studio and stage the brilliant and sophisticated sound, combined with his free stylistic improvisations, which he has inherited from virtuoso musicians from his childhood. During the years when he plays and records folk music he is also a teacher in the Sofia Academy of Music. Many folk musicians learn from his talent and he himself is the creator of a school for interpreting of Bulgarian folklore. After working for 11 years as first clarinetist in the Milan La Scala, he came back to Bulgaria but never returned to folk music as a performer. Currently he has dedicated his life entirely to classical music and to his students. Nevertheless, his wide experience still makes him an important consultant to young musicians, and he can often be seen at all folk festivals and singing competitions.
Another famous musician who has played in the folk orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio since its very creation is the accordionist Petko Dachev. While the Thracian wedding bands of the 1960s and 1970s abounded in perfect clarinetists, the accordion still had a subordinate place and the players used to keep to simpler improvisations. This is what makes Petko Dachev's vast creative method so prominent. In his improvisations he enriched the Strandja vocal mode of playing with a characteristic ornamental strain and in this way created a new Strandja-Thracian style, which quickly found its followers and has been widely exploited by musicians recently.
By establishing a new orchestra, Petko Radev and Petko Dachev attained a new mode in the interpretation of Bulgarian music folklore, which responds to the creative requirements of a whole generation of folk musicians. All renowned singers and instrumentalists have made recordings with them. This makes this programme so rich and various, featuring solo performances of artists, loved by the audience.

GALINA DURMUSHLIYSKA - VOICE OF DOBRUDJA

GALINA DURMUSHLIYSKA - VOICE OF DOBRUDJA
ID: GD227

Dobrudja is a unique folk region that has produced songs preserved by the Bulgarians beyond the boundaries of the country, together with local tunes which have inevitably been influenced by the neighbouring folk regions. This variety of layers has created the specific character of the Dobrudja music and dance art. Rarely, however, do folk-music lovers have a chance to experience its beauty the way it is presented by Galina Durmushliyska, with exquisiteness and style. She began singing at an early age and was trained in the school of the Dobrudja Ensemble in the town of Dobrich. Having made numerous recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio, the singer does not limit herself to the already familiar songs but rather continues exploring little known folk samples, still existing in the small Dobrudja villages. Some of these have been included in this release "Voice of Dobrudja". Together with songs from North and South Dobrudja (North Dobrudja is now in the territory of Romania), the singer has included in her programme songs from Bessarabia and a tune which Mita Stoicheva, the famous folk singer, never recorded. The booklet notes to the release contain detailed information about them and indications to the exact origination of the songs, something that is seldom done in similar editions. Durmushliyska performs these songs with gratitude and love for the people from whom she has inherited them, thus creating real gems of vocal folk art.

Accompanied by: Theodosii Spassov (kaval), Georgi Petrov (gadulka), Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra
Conductors: Hristofor Radanov, Petar Krumov, Georgi Petrov
