In 1877 Taneev wrote his Symphony No 2 (unfinished). By the end of that year the first movement of the symphony was performed at the pre-concert rehearsal under conductorship of Nikolai Rubinstein. The public performance was unsuccessful. Apparently because of that Taneev did not come back to it. However the whole content of the symphony was discussed in the course of studies with Tchaikovsky.
In 1974 composer Vladimir Blok after thorough examining the rough copies completed it.
The composition represents an attempt to create an epic Russian symphony. One can identify some evident prototypes of it. For instance an elegiac yet rigorous introduction to the first movement echoes the first theme of Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet overture. The first movement (probably the best one, Tchaikovsky thought highly of it) outlines a contrast of a resolute approach and lyrical mood. Later on Glazunov developed this intonation, in particular in his famous Symphony No 5.
In 1882 Taneev conceived the idea of writing an opera in three parts, Orestea, based on Eshil's trilogy. Twelve years passed between the intention and its completion. At the time of extravagant styles and plots Taneev found his ideal in an ancient Greek tragedy with its exalted noble philosophically generalized passions but also in the art of opera of the past, in particular that by Gluck. However the result was that most of the critics unanimously rejected the composition. They described it as "affected anachronism", "academic horror" and so forth. Paradoxically as it may seem Taneyev, while struggling against the current, forestalled a turn towards the antiquity and oratorio style in the XXth century music (Stravinsky, Honegger, and Milhaud).
Most popular symphonic fragments of the opera, a large-scale overture and Interlude to scene 2 of act 3 ("Apollo temple in Delphi") are unified by the theme of Apollo. The Interlude was a great success at the premier performance of the opera on October 17, 1895, in St. Petersburg. A majestic scene is conveyed by the means of marvelous contrasts of brass instruments and string instruments and harp.

Alexander Lazarevich Lokshin (1920-1987) is one of the most talented and original composers of the 20th century. Having remained aloof from the confrontation between the various musical trends, which had erupted so acutely in the musical life of the former Soviet Union during the 1960s and 1970s - the rivalry between the radically avant-garde and the traditional-national trends, the composer was able to create his individual style, in which a contemporary musical language is combined with a foundation on traditions of the high art of the past. Emotional saturation, melodic abundance, harmonical and timbral expressivity, a compositionally-dramaturgical plasticity and freedom, as well as a structural unity - these are all qualities, due to which the music of Lokshin authoritatively attracts the listener to itself and could be recognized and remembered. Of the great conductors of our time, Rudolf Barshai is surely the one most closely associated with the contemporary composers whose music he conducts. He studied composition with Shostakovich discussed orchestration with Prokofiev, and established himself as a forceful advocate of the music of Alexander Lokshin. In 1955 Barshai has founded the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. It was he who first acquainted Russian audiences with Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony, Weinberg’s Symphony No. 7 in C major for strings and harpsichord, Music for chamber orchestra of Sviridov.

World premiere

The "Chamber Arias" by Nicola Vaccaj (Tolentino, 1790 - Pesaro, 1848), composed without interruption throughout his whole life, were enormously successful in the 19th century, so much so that they were printed by the major publishers of the time and circulated throughout Europe, just like the "errant Bees" of the title of one of his canzonettas. As well as a composer, Vaccaj was primarily a great teacher: sought after by the leading families of the day in Italy, as well as in Paris and London. Even Queen Victoria wished for him to perform in her presence. A renowned teacher, his "Practical Method of Italian Singing for Chamber" is still an indispensable tool in the arsenal of opera singers worldwide. This recording, entrusted to the voice of mezzo-soprano Monica Carletti, and accompanied on piano by Marco Sollini, restores to us all of the charm and flavour of the maestro.

World premiere

With its monumental structure, Alla gioja looks like a typical conservatory work. Many decades later an older Mascagni judged it to be «a composition beyond my reach» despite «the great beauty that it contains». The only exception was salvaging the baritone's romanza for "Qui sedes" in the Messa di Gloria. For almost fifty years, the scores for orchestra and for voice and piano mysteriously disappeared, and it was only recently that the manuscript was returned to Mascagni's heirs, who have generously made it available for the edition edited by Ennio Clari. Thus, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mascagni, Alla gioja has been brought back to life.
