TOSCA. A SYNOPSIS After the fall of Roman Republic the former consul of Rome Cesare Angelotti, who was imprisoned in the castle of Sant’Angelo, managed to escape. He comes to the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, taking refuge in the chapel of his sister, Marchioness Attavanti. He meets his friend, Mario Cavaradossi, an artist, who is working on a painting of Saint Magdalene in the church. Marchioness Attavanti doesn’t know that Cavaradossi has been using her as a model. Cavaradossi is ready to help his friend; but just when the artist offers him his breakfast their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Cavaradossi’s mistress, a famous singer Floria Tosca. Mario’s unusual behavior and uneasiness arouses her jealousy. Mario reassures her. When Tosca leaves the church, Cavaradossi suggests to Angelotti that he could hide the former prisoner on his villa. A cannon shot announces that Angelotti’s escape is discovered. Cavaradossi accompanies his friend to his house. In search for Angelotti, baron Scarpia, the chief of the secret police, comes to the church. The absence of the artist, the open gate of the Attavanti chapel, the empty food basket that was found in the chapel - all these signs persuade Scarpia of Cavara-dossi’s complicity. Scarpia discovers the amazing li-keliness between Angelotti’s sister and St. Magdalene, while his men find marchioness’s fan. Scarpia, who is secretly in love with Tosca, immediately realizes that he can get his rival out of the way - he is going to arrest Cavaradossi as Angelotti’s accomplice. When Tosca returns, Scarpia shows her the fan and arouses her jealousy and suspicions again. Tosca leaves in tears, furious at the thought that Cavaradossi has betrayed her; she is followed by two of Scarpia's agents. Seated in his room in Farneze palace, Scarpia is waiting for his agents and for Tosca. In Cavaradossi’s villa, his men could not find Angelotti. But the artist was arrested and brought to Scarpia. Cavaradossi refuses to reveal Angelotti’s hiding place, and Scarpia sends him to the torture room. When Tosca comes, she is forced to hear her lover’s cries of ag-ony; tormented by his groans, she finally confesses that Angelotti is hidden in the secret cave in the well in Cavaradossi's garden. Sciarone brings the news of Napoleon’s victory at Marengo. Cavaradossi, who has regained consciousness after tortures, is jubilant. Scarpia sends him to prison - the artist should be prosecuted by the next morning. When Cavaradossi is taken away, Scarpia tells Tosca that he can set him free for the price of Tosca’s love. Finally Toska agrees. But Scarpia can’t repeal Cavaradossi’s death sentence now, so he gives orders for the mock execution: the guns would be loaded with blank cartridges. While Scarpia writes a letter that would allow Tosca and Cavaradossi leave Rome, she notices a knife on the table and conceals it behind her back. And when Scarpia approaches her in triumph, she stabs him. Early in the morning, Cavaradossi is waiting for execution in the Castle of Sant’Angelo. The bells are ringing, and a shepherds’ song can be heard in a distance. An hour before his death, Cavaradossi writes a farewell letter to Tosca. Suddenly she herself appears with a safe-conduct and tells him the news. The lovers anticipate their future happiness. But first, there must be the execution... Tosca teaches Cavaradossi how to simulate his death. The soldiers come and prepare for the execution. The guns fire, Mario falls down and lies motionless, just as Tosca has advised him... After the soldiers have left, she calls her lover, then rushes to him and realizes that Scarpia has deceived her: Cavaradossi is dead. Suddenly she hears that Scarpia’s death has been discovered. Soldiers are coming to arrest her. Tosca runs to the parapet and throws herself down from the tower of the castle.

Facing Goya puts science on the cultural stage through the music of Michael Nyman and the inspiration of one of the world’s greatest painters.

Facing Goya is a taut thriller that follows one woman’s passionate search for the 18th Century Spanish artist Goya’s missing skull. Her journey takes us into the dangerous world of racial stereotyping, gene therapy, cloning and humankind’s follies as seen through Goya’s paintings, etchings and captions. The idea for the opera arose from Michael Nyman’s fascination with the insidious study of craniometry that developed in the 1870s. Goya was regarded as one of the greatest painters of his time. Buried in Bordeaux, legend has it that he asked friends to ensure his head was removed prior to burial to prevent the early craniometrists and researchers of eugenics from getting hold of his brain.

“Facing Goya asks the question ‘if Goya’s skull was found, and if indeed, Goya was cloned, what would happen?’”

Michael Nyman - An opera in two acts (Libretto by Michael Hastings)

The tenth release on MN Records, and the second opera recording for the label, Love Counts is a love story between the unlikeliest of couples: Avril, a lecturer in mathematics at a major college who has divorced a man who physically abused her, and Patsy, a middle-weight fighter at the end of his career who cannot read or recognise numbers.

Michael Nyman uses Riemenschneider's collection of 371 Bach chorale harmonisations to help Patsy find his voice - they are harmonically fragmented, sped up, slowed down, overlaid with themselves. Just as Dr P, the Alzheimer's suffering protagonist of Nyman's The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat, has 'his' Schumann, so, in Love Counts, Patsy, a parallel sufferer, has 'his' Bach.

Award-winning writer Michael Hastings had previously worked with Nyman on the libretto for the opera Man and Boy: Dada, also available on MN Records.

Love Counts was commissioned by the Badisches Staatstheater, Karlesruhe, Germany and first performed there on 12th March 2005, directed by Robert Tannenbaum. This is a recording of the Almeida Theatre (London) production of Love Counts where it was performed in July 2006 by the Michael Nyman Band, bass baritone Andrew Slater and soprano Helen Williams, designed by Peter McKintosh and directed by Lindsay Posner.

An Opera in two acts
Libretto: Michael Hastings
The generously packaged, slip cased 2-CD set contains a four-colour 44-page booklet with complete libretto.

Man and Boy: Dada is the first in a triptych of chamber operas written by Nyman with librettist Michael Hastings. It tells the story of the unlikely friendships between the ageing Dadaist artist Kurt Schwitters, who is exiled in war-torn London; a 12-year-old boy called Michael, who shares the artist's obsession with collecting London Transport bus tickets; and Michael's mother, widowed by the war. The recording reunites the cast from the UK premiere performance at the Almeida Theatre in July 2004 - tenor John Graham Hall as Schwitters, William Sheldon as the boy, and soprano Vivian Tierney as the boy's mother. Paul McGrath conducts the Michael Nyman Band.

Nyman's identification with the storyline runs deep, for as a child growing up in South Chingford in the 1950s, he hoarded bus tickets as part of a collecting mania that also included cigarette cards, matchbox labels, coins and train numbers. In 2001, Hastings approached Nyman to suggest collaborating on a radio play about a post-war London boy who collected bus tickets. Nyman naturally recognised himself in the main character. But he also had an extra element to contribute to the story line. He had recently returned from Dusseldorf where he saw a Schwitters exhibition and discovered the artist's recurring use of bus tickets in his collages. The fusion of the two characters' mutual fixation leads to a friendship which drives the opera's plot which also reveals the terrible loss suffered by Schwitters as he was forced by the Nazis to leave Germany.

The Almeida production of Man and Boy: Dada was greeted with critical acclaim. "Touching and witty, naïve and profound, Man and Boy: Dada is a journey, well worth taking," said Nick Kimberley in The Evening Standard. Writing in the Financial Times, David Murray called it a "genuine success," and Ivan Hewett in The Daily Telegraph found it a "a subtle and touching piece of music-theatre."
