Libretto by the composer after the Tragedy by Alexander Pushkin.
Version and orchestration by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Opera in 4 Acts with a Prologue. Libretto by the composer after the Tragedy by Alexander Pushkin. Version and orchestration by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Boris Godunov-Ivan Petrov; Feodor-Valentina Klepatskaya; Xenia-Tamara Sorokina; Nurse to Xenia-Yevgeniya Verbitskaya; Prince Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky-Georgy Shulpin; Andrey Schelkalov-Alexey Ivanov; Pimen-Mark Reshetin; Grigory, the Pretender-Vladimir Ivanovsky; Marina Mnishek-Irina Arkhipova. Chorus and Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR. Recorded in Moscow, 1962.

“I see the people as a single great personality inspired by one definite idea. That was my task, that was what I wanted to bring out in my opera”, said Mussorgsky of Boris Godunov. The revolutionary idea of Boris Godunov is clearly brought out in the brilliant scene of the people’s revolt (the final scene, “At Kromy”). The mighty song of the rebellious people comes as a burst of indignation against Tsar Boris and his “offsprings” whom the people hold reponsible for all their misfortunes. The idea of composing an opera after Pushkin’s historical tragedy waz suggested to Mussorgsky by his friend and admirer V. Nikolsky, a specialist in history of the Russian language. Thet was in 1868. By this time Mussorgsky’s realistic talent and interest in the life of the people had already become apparent. He accepted the idea of writing a historical opera with enthusiasm. He was absorbed in study of the historical material of the epoch. V. Stasov aided him in finding the texts of folk songs and supplied him with the information drawn from various historical sources. The opera was staged in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre on December 16, 1888.

The author of the story, Ostrovsky, wrote “Korsakov’s music to my “The Snow Maiden” is astonishing. I could hardly imagine anything that might be more suitable and could express so lively the poetry of the ancient pagan cult and this cold as snow at first and then irrepressibly passionate heroine of the tale.”

Easiness and quickness of composing the opera were the evidence of not only Rimsky-Korsakov’s keenness on Ostrovsky’s fairy tale subject but of his maturity as composer. The opera was completed in clavier within two months and a half! The sensitive composer could catch the main idea -The Snow Maiden was not cold and heartless, without any feeling of love but she was longing to love, to be near the people, feel and experience as most of them. The author of the fairy tale A.N. Ostrovsky admired the opera. Both musicians who performed “The Snow Maiden” and audience fell in love with the opera at once; it won the composer’s heart as well. “The Snow Maiden” (a spring fairy tale), Opera in 4 Acts with the Prologue. Libretto by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov based on the like-named play by A.N. Ostrovsky.

Arlette Chédel, alto (Geneviève, mother of Golaud and Pelléas)
Gregor Koubrak baritone (Voice of a Shepherd)

Gérard Souzay (Golaud) and Eric Tappy (Pelléas) side by side in a production of Claude Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande under the direction of Jean-Marie Auberson at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva on 20 March 1969 - Claves offers the opportunity to relive this exceptional moment in a recording from its new series CHRONOS dedicated to particularly remarkable archive recordings. Under Radio Suisse Romande’s microphones the singers excelled and sparked a dialogue with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (which had just lost its founder and director Ernest Ansermet, who was to have lead the production) marked by a phenomenal naturalness. The clarity of their diction in combination with profound musicality makes this recording a veritable singing lesson. The recent decease of three main figures from this production in 2004 (Erna Spoorenberg on 18 March, Jean-Marie Auberson on 4 July, and Gérard Souzay on 17 August) lends this recording particular poignancy; it is dedicated to their memory.

The double CD is accompanied by extensive documentation taken from the archives and with an introduction by Alain Perroux, who passionately remembers this event.

The performers are all internationally known for their commitment to contemporary music.

The Intelligence Park, recorded in the 1990 Almeida Opera production and setting Vincent Deane's libretto of 18th-century Dublin, explores the relationship between an opera composer and the increasingly independent life of the characters he has created.

Set in 1753, (although the music is not fashioned on that of the era) the story is an old-fashioned ‘opera-seria’ on the subject of conflict between head and heart, duty and inclincation, based around a composer who falls in love with a castrato.

This production is offering Händel's masterpiece about which a lot of excellent recordings have already been released, however Concerto is offering the true "original" opera version. This means that the roles played by Cesare, Tolomeo and Nireno which have been especially written at that time for the castrati who at best could perform those roles, are in fact beautifully performed by our well-known sopranists, as Angelo Manzotti who is interpreting the main character; Angelo Galeano, the youngest one, who plays the role of Tolomeo in an outstanding way and least but not last Angelo Bonazzoli, playing Nireno. Besides them we have the chance to listen to Alexandra Zabala, Cleopatra, who is well renowned among opera public as well as within the recording industry.
The Arias herein included are surely among Händel's most impressive ones and refer to the most affective themes as love, jealousy, glory and revenge.
The Voice Ensemble and Orchestra by Concento Ecclesiastico are conducted by M° Luca Franco Ferrari. The Opera in three Acts has been live recorded in Savona, Italy in 2006 under the direction of Alessandro Capaldi; patroness of that special event was Renata Scotto.
This Opera has then been remastered at 32 bit to enhance a pure and high quality sound which may be proved by the most sophisticated audio technologies.
