In 1849, the translator, poet and playwright Lev Mey (1822-1862) wrote a drama The Tsar’s Bride based on one of the passages from the era of Ivan the Terrible’s reign. In 1868, Mily Balakirev drew Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s attention to Mey’s work. However, the composer set to creating an opera based on the plot of The Tsar’s Bride only thirty years later. He began his work in February 1898 and completed it in ten months. Almost without changing Mey’s plot, Rimsky-Korsakov enhanced the dramatic qualities of The Tsar’s Bride with his musical means. The opera was premiered in the autumn of 1899 at a Moscow theatre of the industrialist and patron Savva Mamontov with Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov being the conductor. The Tsar’s Bride, a sample of realistic drama, is one of the most popular works for musical theatre at the present time. The performance of 1973 presented on these CDs brought together great artists of Russian stage - Evgeny Nesterenko, Galina Vishnevskaya, Vladimir Atlantov, Irina Arkhipova and others.

The opera Betrothal in a Monastery (The Duenna) takes a special place not only in Prokofiev's career, but also in the history of Russian Soviet music theatre. It is the first lyrical and comic opera. Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy fascinated Prokofiev at once. Having read the play, Prokofiev exclaimed, "This is champagne! It can make an opera à la Mozart or Rossini." The composer immediately started writing the libretto using the English original and translating it into Russian. Prokofiev's wife Mira Mendelson was an author of the rhymed verse. Prokofiev composed the music within a shortest period of time - during the summer and early autumn of 1940. The premiere of the opera was expected at the Stanislavsky Musical Theatre in summer of 1941, but World War II did not let it happen. The first performance took place as late as in November of 1946, at the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad and received acclaim of critics and audience alike. The opera performed by the soloists, choir and orchestra of the State Musical Theatre of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko conducted by Kamil Abdullayev was recorded by Firma Melodiya in 1963 and awarded an André Messager prize of Academy of Lyric Recordings of France in 1967.

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Anton Rubinstein’s opera The Demon. This wonderful work, which was inspired with the poem of the same name by Mikhail Lermontov and then inspired the likes of Mikhail Vrubel and Feodor Chaliapin, became a milestone in the history of music theatre. Unfortunately, the opera was almost forgotten by the public and musicians, and only a few of its fragments were widely known. It is only lately that Russian and foreign opera houses have been showing a new interest in it.

Rubinstein finished the opera in 1871. One of the greatest pianists of the 19th century nicknamed “tsar of the stage”, a composer and conductor, the founder of the first ever Russian conservatory in St Petersburg, he stood at the summit of glory and in full possession of his composing mastery.

The Demon combined traditions of Russian and West European music art and did justice to the colour of Caucasus. The opera was a great success with the public and accepted enthusiastically even by the composers of The Five, Rubinstein’s ideological 'opponents'. “A superb artist”, wrote Modest Mussorgsky in a letter to Vladimir Stasov.

Of all recorded versions of The Demon, we offer the one realized in 1974 by the soloists, choir and orchestra of the All-Union Radio lead by the outstanding maestro Boris Khaikin. Alexander Polyakov, a young bass-baritone and future soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre performed the main part. Nina Lebedeva, a Bolshoi soloist and remarkable performer of Russian and foreign operatic repertoire sang the part of Tamara. Alexei Usmanov (tenor), a soloist of the All-Union Radio, performed the part of Sinodal.

Alexander Polyakov (Demon), Nina Lebedeva (Tamara), Evgeny Vladimirov (Gudal), Alexey Usmanov (Sinodal), Nina Grigorieva (Nanny), Nina Derbina (Angel), Yury Elnikov (Messenger), Boris Morozov (Old Servant)

Now that Reinhard Goebel, pioneer in the world of historically informed early music performance, has officially declared that his work with Musica Antiqua Köln is coming to an end, we now encounter him in a new role: as conduc-tor of a modern symphony orchestra. But Goebel’s move away from original instruments does not mean that he will be restricting himself to the standard repertoire! In his first opera production, Goebel presents a seldom heard work by late 18th century composer Michael Haydn, “Andromeda and Perseus”, composed in 1787 and premiered in Salzburg. This release is the first CD of the historic German setting of the libretto as found in Haydn’s original score. The unimaginably virtuosic arias and recitatives are linked by modern texts that compellingly lead us through the drama.

Verdi’s timeless masterpiece brought up to date in a hilarious new English version, shot on and around a golf course.

At a golf club near Windsor, “Big John” Falstaff props up the bar at the nineteenth hole, (the member’s bar) which is where he is invariably to be found. He doesn’t actually play golf, because no-one wants to play with him - and anyway he’s probably too plump to make it beyond the first green. However he takes comfort in the fact that his bar bill is about to be settled, and all he has to do to achieve this extraordinary feat is to seduce the lovely Alice Ford, a task that he considers himself eminently qualified to undertake. As the big man blunders from one catastrophe to another and the plot races towards its uproarious conclusion, Tony Britten’s trademark wit and accessibility perfectly compliments Verdi’s glorious comedy.

Falstaff is an operatic commedia lirica in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, adapted by Arrigo Boito from Shakespeare's plays The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV.
