111 cyclists reach famed opera house Teatro Colón to welcome Mauricio Kagel (1931-2008), one of the great composers of the 20th Century, who was born in Argentina, but left the country and settled in Germany in 1957. However, his adventurous music remained an inspiration to a number of forward-thinking Argentinean musicians, and in 2006 he returned to Buenos Aires for a Kagel festival, where he was to direct a major concert by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, but also worked with a group of young and eager musicians advocated to his repertoire, the Ensamble Süden. Filmmaker Gastón Solnicki was on hand to capture Kagel’s visit on film, and the documentary süden chronicles the composer’s efforts in working directly with the musicians as well as reflecting the situation of modern music in Argentina as such. The documentation surprises for its capacity to captivate even those who are not interested in contemporary music.
Der junge argentinische Filmemacher Gastón Solnicki hat mit seinem ersten langen Film SÜDEN eine Doku über den Maestro hingelegt, die auf wunderbare Art einfängt, was Kagel als Vollblutmusiker und als Menschen ausmachte. Solnicki hat Mauricio Kagel bei einem Besuch in seiner alten Heimat Argentinien begleitet. Jahrzehntelang war er nicht mehr da. Mit jungen argentinischen Musikern, die sich seiner Musik verschrieben haben, tritt er nun, seine Werke vortragend, auf. Der Film zeigt en passant, wie Perfektion auch daher kommen kann. Liebe zum Detail. Die Suche nach dem Klang, der passt. Und jede Menge Humor. Perfektion ja, aber toternst beim Vortragen sein: Nein. Ironie und Selbstironie der Werke Kagels ergeben sich beim bloßen Dranbleiben. Akustisch wie visuell. Der Charme des Dirigenten seiner eigenen Werke ergibt sich aus dem zögernden Nicht-immer-einverstanden-sein und der kindlichen Freude, wenn der richtige Ausdruck gefunden wurde. Ob nun in einer flüchtigen Aktion mit 111 Radfahrern in EINE BRISE. Oder in Vokalwerken, die von den Sängern interpretatorisch einen brecht’schen Gestus abverlangen. Oder in Orchesterwerken, die den Sinn und Unsinn bestimmter Musikstücke hinterfragen. Was ist zum Beispiel ein Marsch? Gastón Solnicki hat mit SÜDEN eine sehr persönliche Homage an Mauricio Kagel entworfen, die einen Einblick in das Schaffen des Allroundtalentes gibt, die auch Neueinsteigern im Bereich Neue Musik ans Herz gelegt werden kann. Humor sprengt nämlich so manche Grenzen.
