For You is a new opera that brings together the music of composer and BBC Radio 3 presenter Michael Berkeley and Booker-prize winning author Ian McEwan. This gripping tale of love, lust and obsession centers on the composer and prodigious womanizer Charles Frieth (Alan Opie), and the tragic consequences that his selfish actions cause him and those around.

Although essentially dark, there are moments of irony, wit, and humour throughout the opera. Soaring vocal lines, intricate ensemble pieces, and imaginative instrumental writing make this an electrifying work. Masterly performed by Music Theatre Wales, directed by Michael Rafferty.

The Opera has had great success from its initial performances in Wales and the Royal Opera House provoking great reviews.

“For You is a dark opera worth waiting for.”The Evening Standard

“... a dazzling and taut chamber piece which gives passionate way to Bergian lyricism while referencing both Britten and Richard Strauss in its airy, word-driven vocal lines.”

Robert Saxton’s long-awaited radio opera, commissioned by the BBC, is a modernist take on the tale of the Wandering Jew - the shoe-mender condemned by Jesus to wander the Earth until the Second Coming after he refused to help him on his way to his Crucifixion. The opera introduces many legendary characters, following medieval and other myths, including Faust, Mephistopheles, Kundry and Wotan. Underneath its surface lies a structure relating to the annual cycle of Jewish and Christian festivals in eight scenes of sweeping orchestral and choral music, enhanced by studio post-production from Antony Pitts.

L. FRANCESCONI - Ballata

L. FRANCESCONI - Ballata
ID: STR57012
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Opéra

A new chapter in the Ricordi Oggi series, the collection that enacts the strong partnership between Stradivarius and the prestigious Casa Ricordi publishing house.
This world première recording is dedicated to Luca Francesconi and his Ballata, a two-act opera whose libretto, by Umberto Fiori, is based upon S. T. Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Francesconi confirms his particular confidence for large-scale musical thought, rather than merely show a flair for illustrative brilliance.
"Coleridge’s Mariner confronts a natural world that is implacably adverse, one that [...] remains magnificently indifferent to its needs. To respond to that requires a sense of pacing, of large-scale dynamic proportion, that must prevail over any proclivity to exuberant detail.[...] That sense of scale [...] is everywhere in Francesconi’s recent work. [...] Fiori’s fine libretto is so constructed as to allow for the enchained series of numbers that are integral to that form of dramaturgy, because they pace the opera’s progress through a sequence of images and actions whose synopsis could be presented in a few, trite sentences, but whose power and resonance can only be felt when worked through at the slow, remorseless pace common to Francesconi’s opera, and Coleridge’s poem” David Osmond-Smith, liner notes.

Lost Highway is a composition that decidedly lives from the transformation of physical spaces, diverse inner and outer spaces, into sound spaces. In performance, this is achieved through various, three-dimensional sound projections, which surround the audience with playing, live-electronics, and virtual acoustics, resulting in different experiential relationships from within and without, close by, and from a distance. The illustrations of these sound spaces and notes naturally are only an attempt to approach the experience in the theater. Fortunately, the possibilities of surround-techniques have come to our aid, which envelop the listener with alternating, overlaying sound-strata. Thus, the present production was intended to be mixed for 5.1 surround. (Olga Neuwirth)

Includes booklet with texts by Stefan Drees, Robert Höldrich, David Lynch, Olga Neuwirth and Slavoj Zizek
