Plamen Djouroff, conductor

Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1962. Since its foundation 40 years ago it has been conducted by Vassil Kazandjiev (1964-1978), Emil Tabakov (1979-1988) and its present conductor - Plamen Djouroff, who has been connected with the work of the ensemble since 1988. Sofia Soloists has preserved throughout the years its image of an elite formation with an exceptionally rich repertoire from the 16-20th centuries, including works by Bulgarian composers. The present release features four pieces composed during the 1970s-1990s. Symphony No 4 by Lyubomir Pipkov (1904-1974) was written in the last years of the composer's life (1970). For this composition his choice fell on the chamber expression of the string orchestra. Meditations by Lazar Nikolov (b. 1922) was written for string quartet (1970) and a year later it was revised for string orchestra. Microsymphony (1922) by Dimitar Tapkoff (b. 1929) brings out the most concentrated expression of the symphonic model. The work is dedicated to Arthur Honegger and the use of his initials A, H has not only tonal and constructive role but also introduces semantically the question of tradition and stability of musical values. Requiem for an Unknown Young Man for 13 stringed instruments (1968) by Simeon Pironkov (1927-1999) combines the European liturgical choral tradition and the composition and technical devices of aleatory music. Sofia Soloists' conductor, Plamen Djouroff (b. 1949), graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia. He furthered his studies in conducting at the Vienna Academy of Music under Karl Osterreicher. Besides being conductor of Sofia Soloists, Mr. Djouroff is also one of the outstanding Bulgarian composers. His works have been performed and released in Bulgaria and abroad.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Wind Orchestra

After featuring the tambura, zourna and gaida instruments (GD 278, GD 276, GD 106), the series continues with presenting horos and ruchenitsa for wind orchestra. Having originated after the liberation of the Bulgarian people from the rule of the Ottoman Empire (1878), today they have become a necessary part of all festive celebrations in Bulgaria.
The intense development of music and performance art during the first years of independence in Bulgaria lead to the creation of professional symphonic, opera and chamber ensembles. Together with them the first military wind orchestras were formed. Their repertoire consists of marches, polkas, overtures, etc., as well as horo music and medleys of folk songs. A large number of composers at that time wrote folk-based music for wind orchestras. The most talented composer of such music was Diko Iliev. After his participation in the Balkan War and the First World War, he began composing horos, which are still being loved by the Bulgarian people. From 1931 Diko Iliev played the baritone in the newly-founded wind orchestra in Oryahovo and thus he put the beginning of one of his most intense periods of creative activity. Iliev had the happy fate to become an inseparable part of the Bulgarian urban musical folklore. After him other well-trained musicians continued this trend. Today the wind orchestra is an intrinsic part of the Bulgarian folk music culture.

The group Ocarina Ensemble is a new born ocarina group in Budrio. They perform traditional italian music on typical instruments made by the Budrio maker Fabio Menaglio.

THE OCARINA is a globular flute, the origins of which can be traced back in time when masks, as well as seashells and tubular trumpets, were used to modify the voice. Spreading to all cultures practically all over the world, globular flutes soon became proper musical instruments with a whistle insufflator and finger holes. First they were carved out of gourds and pods or made out of eggshells, subsequently they were moulded out of clay, usually in zoomorphic or anthropomorphic shapes, so as to emphasize their descendence from masks and their former ritual and magical functions.

Four concerts at 2009’s Edinburgh International Festival offered us a great opportunity to draw on our repertoire of the last 17 years, and to invite a few special guests to add some new discoveries along the way. This CD presents a selection of favourite moments from those evenings at the Hub, showing just some of the fun that we had there; everything you hear on this recording happened on stage in the shows (except the gun going off in the Tattoo at the Castle next door) … It's guaranteed live, and all the better for it!

Michael Marra
Mr McFall's Chamber

'Marra's music has broad horizons. His songs' subjects roam across Mull and Shetland, over the Canadian prairies, to Schenectady, New York home of swing-era jazz broadcasting and down into Mexico. But his muse is governed by sound Dundonian principles, including the futility of going in the huff and the folly of vanity.'
- The Herald, May 2010

‘Mr McFall's chamber are the jewel in the Scottish musical crown, continually pushing the envelope of repertoire and style.''
- The Scotsman, June 2010

Concerto Caledonia

A chamber-scale Concerto Caledonia bring to life a key figure from the Golden Age of Scottish fiddle music,
when the publishing of fiddle music books was in full spate and the familiar forms of strathspey, reel and jig were taking shape.

'Red Rob' Mackintosh, named in the customary Gaelic fashion after the colour of his hair, found himself a place in the orchestra of the Edinburgh Musical Society and set up business as a teacher. (1783) was his first collection, published the year before his ill-fated move to Aberdeen, and it represents his desire both to understand the musical world around him as fully as possible, and to forge himself a career within it. Concerto Caledonia have realised the music from within its pages, shedding light on an age when, not yet 'traditional', such dance genres still bore the imprint of their individual composers.

Concerto Caledonia is one of Scotland's premiere earlymusic ensembles with a reputation for reviving littleknown but important music. With their third disc on Delphian the band bring vital part of Scotland's heritage to a wider audience with the music of 'Red Rob'.

Gavin Bryars - The Church Closest to the Sea - Mr McFall’s Chamber

Gavin Bryars - The Church Closest to the Sea - Mr McFall’s Chamber
ID: DCD34058
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Voices

The double bass has always been close to Gavin Bryars' heart. His own instrument, it has also featured strongly in his music for other players - as in The Church Closest to the Sea, written for Mr McFall's Chamber and their bassist Rick Standley. Bryars' music straddles worlds: classical and jazz, composition and improvisation, the works on this disc moving between the lushly sensuous and the coolly laid-back as they meditate on geographical and emotional borderlands.
