Collection: British Composer Series Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble3 -10 Paul Sherman, double bass / Louise Mott, mezzo-soprano
This CD additionally features the voice of Louise Mott in The Sibyl of Cumae, a brilliant young singer who has already sung principal roles with Almeida, Opera Group, ENO, WNO and BBC Proms. Her recordings include Marthe in Schumann’s Scenes from Goethe’s Faust under Philippe Herreweghe for Harmonia Mundi. The double-bassist Paul Sherman, principal with ECO and Opus 20, also joins the group for this work.
Each work occupies its own highly individual territory. But the works have in common an impulse to embrace wider, non-musical concerns and programmes. For James Wood, Crying Bird, Echoing Star brings together two long-held fascinations, namely birdsong and the star patterns of the constellations. Gordon McPherson writes that his piece is a call to young composers to ask themselves what’s really important to their own writing. Edward Dudley Hughes’s work evokes the semi-mythical Sibyl of Cumae’s possession by the god Apollo and her arduous spirit journeys to the underworld. Rowland Sutherland’s work explores the sounds and colours of distant places as they invigorate the imagination. Finally, Rolf Hind’s The Horse Sacrifice is inspired by a crucial and elaborate part of Vedic (early Hindu) ritual.
The New Music Players was founded by the composer Edward Dudley Hughes and is one of the most engaging of the new independent contemporary classical ensembles. It has made several commercial CDs, worked with leading composers, broadcast many times on BBC Radio 3, appeared at major UK Festivals, toured in Europe and is currently Ensemble-In-Residence at the University of York.
The recording and commissions were supported by a grant from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Chamber EnsembleThis is the Galeazzi Ensemble's 2nd recording on London Independent and follows on from the enormous success, both critically and commercially, of their first recording "The Age of Elegance".
Like their previous CD, this recording presents works by familiar faces - Schubert’s sumptuous string trio and Mozart’s flute quartet, written purely for money - but also introduces us to some less celebrated figures such as Gyrowetz, the young pretender to Mozart’s symphonic genius whose dainty quartet looks very much backwards into the classical era, Dittersdorf, the colourful favourite of the Austrian Empress, who effortlessly explores the nuances of string writing with energy and style, and Hoffmeister, the entrepreneur of the musical world - publisher, agent and banker - whose quartet is full of musical surprises! |

Subcollection: Piano“As with so much in Brahms' life, the genesis of his Piano Quintet, op.34, was fraught with indecision and introspection...” Brahms first wrote this work scored for string quintet, and after taking to heart criticism from Joachim, he not only re-scored the work for two pianos, but destroyed the original string quintet manuscript. Published in 1874, this new du version was not without problems, and it was Clara Schumann who pointed these out, causing Brahms to set about re-arranging the music once more, this time for piano quintet.
This was no simple re-scoring, for the piano quintet medium has unique demands, but, at last, “Brahms had found the medium through which his material could speak most eloquently.” It is the quintet in this final guise that we know it best, and that the Schubert Ensemble deliver here on this recording in an assured and expressive performance, allowing the sophisticated detail of Brahms' writing to throw us into the depths of emotion he conjures up. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Chamber EnsembleThe London Conchord Ensemble are joined on this disc by the baritone William Dazeley, presenting a seductive collection of fascinating chamber works and songs written by three major 20th Century French chamber music composers.Sensual and intimate, these works epitomise these works epitomise the music of early 20th-century France, with their fluid lines and unusual textures, sensitively captured here by Conchord.
Though born in Berlin, Charles Loeffler claimed to hail from Alsace, so strongly did he identify with the French aesthetic. His Five Songs set poetry by French poets Baudelaire and Verlaine, and his musical style recalls Franck, Chausson and Debussy. Add to this a Russian sense of instrumental colour, and the result is a fascinating concoction of expressive and of expressive and evocative musical elements. Pierné's Sonata Da Camera is reminiscent of Debussy's seminal Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp in its poignant colours and intricatetextures, while Duruflé's Prélude Recitatif et Variations reveals a different style from that of his Variations reveals a different style from that of his famous Requiem in writing that recalls Ravel.
Throughout this disc, Conchord plays with an effortless grace and flair, a finesse that perfectly, a finesse that perfectly communicates this exquisite selection of music. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble"Detours" is inspired by the composer's personal memories and reflections concerning cars. It draws on sources and references of a distinctly non-classical nature, but cannot in any way be called "crossover" - more it is a fusion of genres, as are the other works, brilliantly performed by Psappha.

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Chamber EnsembleLazar Nikolov (b. 1922) has included in this CD three works created in the 1990-1992 period, performed at the New Bulgarian Music review and in concert. His music has been marked as avant-guard and referred to the latest trends of 20th century compositional output. In his latest works the composer synthesises devices and techniques of serial, atonal and aleatoric music. The use of Bulgarian metres and modes has always lent a specific, national character to his art which has become a model of innovative thinking. Of particular originality is the composition Metamorphoses No. 4 for 12 violoncellos, dedicated to Prof. Zdravko Yordanov. This is yet another proof of Nikolov's ability to work with timbres, to discover sonorities and new performer's techniques. |
