Collection: Baroque Subcollection: Chamber EnsembleGeorge Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was a practical composer. He believed in recycling: if he once wrote a rather good piece, he used it again elsewhere. Of the compositions entitled Concerti Grossi, Opus 3 (1734), only the first was originally conceived as a concerto grosso. The other five are compilations of movements written years before, with a few new movements added. Opus 3, therefore, could be described as an environmentally friendly compilation of 60% recycled and 40% new material. The publication contains a wonderful variety of texture and colour, and is full of contrasting emotions. The individual concertos feature different instrumentations - pairs of oboes, recorders, cellos, violins and bassoons all make an appearance, as well as solo violin, oboe, flute and organ. |

Collection: Early Romantics Subcollection: Chamber EnsembleSignum Classics is delighted to present Charivari Agreable's tenth disc: Caprice and Conceit in Seicento Italy.
This disc explores the overlap of repertory for the cornett and the violin (occasioned by their frequent interchangeability), and in the marriage of both instruments. Of the two, the cornett’s particular appeal, according to Girolamo Dalla Casa (1584), lies in its tonal similarity to the human voice, an attribute poetically likened by Marin Mersenne (1636) to ‘a brilliant ray of sunshine piercing the shadows’.
The juxtaposition of wind and strings is most vividly enhanced by the pairing of a violin with a cornett in small-scale vocal and instrumental works. The most beautiful is arguably the sonata by Cima, one of the earliest trio sonatas.
It is hoped that our conceit of re-lighting the cornett’s gleam will find favour among those who delight in the capriciousness of the music of the Seicento.
An innovative programme by the award-winning Charivari Agreable, exploring historical and celestially beautiful combinations of cornett, violin and viol via works of a wide range of Italian composers of the seventeenth century. |

Subcollection: Chamber EnsembleContinuing its work with young artists, CORO has the pleasure of announcing Musique Pour Mazarin! the debut recording by le Jardin Secret, winners of both the first prize and audience prize at the Early Music Network Young Artists Competition 2007.
This talented young ensemble consisting of soprano, harpsichord, theorbo, viola da gamba and baroque cello, present a delightfully varied programme featuring a diverse mixture of French and Italian music that would have been heard at the court of the flamboyant Cardinal Jules Mazarin.
The juxtaposition of French and Italian works on this disc shows clearly the rich selection of music heard at Mazarin’s court in the late 1600s. They demonstrating the stark contrast between the French and Italian styles of the period with the added ingredient of political and cultural rivalry and intrigue - the Italian born Cardinal importing Italian culture into a resistant French context - contributes a little "piquancy" to the mix!
On this disc, which includes chansons by Charpentier, extracts of operas by Lully and Cavalli and the delightful, if at times brutal, ‘Mazarinades’, le Jardin Secret bring alive the emotive energy of the music, opening the door to the aesthetic world of this Baroque period in all its beguiling beauty. |
