„Dresden Chamber Choir “ (directed by Hans-Christoph Rademann)
The CD Weihnachten („Christmas“) by the „Dresden Chamber Choir “ (directed by Hans-Christoph Rademann) was introduced to the German market in 2002. It was very successful- after few weeks the CD was sold out and had to be re-released soon after. Hans- Christoph Rademann and the „Dresden Chamber Choir “ have chosen wonderful pieces around Christmas - very popular songs, unknown titles and a few contemporary pieces. The program tells us the Christmas story in musical kind - beginning at the Announcement to Maria until the Worship of the shepherds. The CD shows a wide ranging mix from early sacred music (Heinrich Schütz: Tröstet mein Volk) until romantic choral pieces of well-known Christmas songs (Max Reger: “Macht hoch die Tür”) - as well as some new compositions by Arvo Pärt, Karsten Gundermann and Jan Sandström. The Dresden singers keep always the balance between wide dynamic contrasts and sure intonation. In the last few years the Dresden Chamber Choir has received several international prizes. At the 5th International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktobersdorf in 1997, the choir was awarded the first prize and was officially judged to be “internationally outstanding”. The recordings have been made at St. Lucas church in Dresden in 2002

Guillaume Dufay: Sacred music from the Bologna Q15 manuscript

Guillaume Dufay: Sacred music from the Bologna Q15 manuscript

Sacred Music

This is the third disc recorded by The Clerks' Group for their Signum Records trilogy. The series explores repertoire in the medieval period and culminates with a selection of works by Guillaume Dufay, found in one of the great anthologies of 15th century music: the manuscript Bologna, Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale, MS Q15 (or "Q15" as it is known by its friends).

The Q15 manuscript contains examples of almost every conceivable musical genre of the period by a vast array of composers. The Clerks' Group has chosen to perform works by a single composer, but still the variety of forms and styles on offer is bewildering. Guillaume Dufay was a composer who witnessed and contributed to most of the revolutionary changes to occur in music composition in the 15th century. The album includes some of the earlier works so often neglected from Dufay's repertoire, and goes on to explore compositions that demonstrate this revolutionary genius. Some compositional techniques celebrated by The Clerks' Group's performance include the playful exchange of Dufay's song-like melodies between the vocal lines; and the use of mensural canon, where the same melody is sung by all voices but at slightly different speeds. These are just a few examples of the radical nature of Dufay's music as demonstrated on this recording.

The Clerks' Group brings immense diversity to the music and its performance. Their refreshing approach displays sincere empathy and passion for this astonishing repertory.

Edward Cowie’s unique compositional voice stems from his wide-ranging interdisciplinary interests in both the sonic and visual arts, with many of his works inspired by ideas and concepts from artworks and from the natural world. The opening piece of this recording - a 2011 commission for BBC Radio 3 - creates a complex musical tapestry and soundscape from the call of the Australian bell-bird, opening with translations of choruses of several species of Australian frogs.

In 2002 Cowie become the BBC Singers’ first ‘Associate Composer’, marking a relationship between the composer that began in the mid-1970s and continues to this day.

Renaissance

Vocal Collection

A Franco-Flemish composer and music theorist of the early Renaissance, Dufay was the central figure in the Burgundian School and was the most famous and influential composer in Europe in the mid-15th century. His music was copied, distributed and sung across Europe and almost all composers of the succeeding generations absorbed some elements of his style.

The Hilliard Ensemble is one of the world's finest vocal chamber groups, and is probably unrivalled for its formidable reputation in the fields of both early and new music. This series was only previously available direct from the group but has never before been fully available at international retail.

Instrumentarium Lipsiense (III)

Thomanerchor Leipzig
Leipziger Concert
Dorothee Mields, sopran, Gotthold Schwarz, bass

This is an exceptional kind of CD. Quoting from the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries, it tries to illustrate with its choice of pieces a few of the characteristic, but also some of the exceptional, Bach instrumental combinations. Special attention is brought to instrument makers from Bach’s Leipzig milieu, the illustrative pieces for which, when possible, use original instruments from the Musical Instrument Museum. This CD recording offers the unique opportunity, with the Ricercare a 6 (BWV 1079/5), of experiencing a Hoffman (Martin Hoffman, musical instrument maker) ensemble of five viola da gambas and a violin. The Leipzig Concert Ensemble are specialists of early music and play with historically correct instrumentations appropriate to each piece.

The Bouts Ensemble is a chamber music ensemble devoted to the repertoire of the "high" baroque and pre-classical periods - ca. 1725-1775. Through performance of works by both famous and unjustly neglected composers, the group aims to contribute to a greater appreciation and understanding of music from this endlessly fascinating period. The members of this young group use their extensive experience in historical performance practice on period instruments to bring to this repertoire the virtuosity, vitality and intelligence that it demands.

Welcome all Wonders: A Christmas Cantata is a large-scale work for choir, organ, and trumpet spanning 15 movements. It celebrates the Christmas story through an imaginative selection and juxtaposition of poetry and liturgical texts, and provides a multifaceted telling of the familiar narrative. The celebratory aspects of Christmas are tainted by darker themes that are inherent to the story but are easily overlooked, culminating in an enlightened and engaging work that explores the Christmas story in a profound manner.

The Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford is among the finest and most active university choirs in the UK. Its wide-ranging repertory includes a rich array of Renaissance and Baroque music and contemporary works.

CONTRAPUNCTUS
OWEN REES DIRECTOR

Coupling powerful interpretations with path-breaking scholarship, the choir Contrapunctus presents music by the best-known composers as well as unfamiliar masterpieces. Directed by Owen Rees, a specialist in music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the group presents imaginative programmes revealing previously undiscovered musical treasures and throwing new light on familiar works.

This recording explores the musical ‘cries of the oppressed’ from opposite ends of Europe, which include some of the most powerful works composed in England and Portugal during this period by Byrd, Tallis, Monte and Cardoso. The highlight perhaps is the first recording of a newly reconstructed vocal work by Thomas Tallis, Libera nos. This has long been thought to be an instrumental work, and has been recorded as such, but there’s persuasive historical evidence for us to be confident that this is in fact a choral setting of the antiphon Libera nos, and it is performed here with the relevant text restored to the five vocal parts
