Collection: Sacred Music Subcollection: ChoirRecorded at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia, in 1999
This is yet another release from the series of Slavonic Orthodox Chants in Gega New's catalogue. The Male Choir of the Sveta Nedelya Cathedral in Sofia is one of the oldest Bulgarian church choirs, whose foundation (1897) and development is associated with the name of the great Bulgarian musician Nikolai Nikolaev. He is one of the founding fathers of musical life in Bulgaria, and is connected with the establishment of some of the first musical institutions in the country. Currently, the choir is directed by Kiril Popov and he has dedicated this programme to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. The release presents chants from the All Night Vigil and the Holy Liturgy, strictly observing the order of performance in the Divine Service used in common practice nowadays. Some of the chants are original works by Petar Dinev and Dobri Hristov (Bulgaria), and by the Russian composers Alexander Grechaninov, Pavel Chesnokov, Ipolitov-Ivanov, etc. The release also includes arrangements made by different musicians throughout the years. The authentic sounding as well as the participation of priests makes this recording invaluable. The performance of the choir has achieved the characteristic emotional and psychological effect resulting from the diction and the manner of sounding. |

Collection: Baroque Subcollection: ChoirThe CD includes works by famous composers from the epoch of late-Renaissance and Baroque. Claudio Monteverdi, the creator of the first important operas in the history of Europe's art of music, is represented by eight works. The songs and the psalms performed by the Sofia Madrigal Choir, specialised in the interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque music, demonstrate not only Monteverdi's exceptional ability to develop polyphonic compositions but also his mastery of the new emotional style strongly influenced by Italian folklore. Secular or sacred, these works are imbued with a sincere emotion and with the humanistic spirit of the time. They demonstrate a new attitude towards the text set to music and the melodic invention of Monteverdi, who lived and worked in the second half of the 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries. Carlo Gesulado, his near contemporary, also created models of madrigal art, sparkling with creative wit and invention, featuring virtuosity and poetry. And next to them ranks the German composer Heinrich Schutz, who laid the foundations of the Baroque style in German music. He is the author of many remarkable sacred works - passions, masses, madrigals, an opera, one ballet, vocal and instrumental opuses. The CD contains some of his secular songs, admirable for their melodiousness and beautiful vocal texture.

Subcollection: ChoirThe Bulgarian National Radio Children's Choir under the baton of Hristo Nedyalkov present the most popular Christmas songs like Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Holy Night, Oh Christmas Tree, as well as Bulgarian carols by Dobri Hristov, Angel Bukureshtliev, Petko Stainov, Marin Goleminov, etc. The songs by Hristo Nedyalkov with which several generations of Bulgarian children grew up are also very popular.
Hristo Nedyalkov, the well-known choral conductor, founded the Bulgarian National Radio Children's Choir in 1960. For a short time it established itself as one of the elite Bulgarian choirs because of its crystal sound, its incredible sense of style, content and mood of each song, its rich repertoire including works from different ages, from the 17th century up to modern time, both by Bulgarian and foreign composers. The choir's concerts in Bulgaria and around the world (the Children's Choir has performed in almost 30 countries) are a true festive occasion for the connoisseurs of the art of choral singing. The choir's success is due mainly to its chief conductor Hristo Nedyalkov and his talent to work with children. The famous choir expert communicates his experience and knowledge to students, choral conductors, music experts, guests from abroad and music teachers. This way his work with the Bulgarian National Radio Children's Choir becomes a true school for choral art.

Its repertoire has been especially varied after 1989, when conductor of the choir became Adriana Blagoeva. Members of the choir are boys aged between 8 and 15, who are trained by experienced teachers on a special curriculum. As many as 1500 children have been trained in the choir since its foundation.
