Compositeur: SAINT-SAËNS, Camille ((1835-1921)) |
| Son musique: His major works include: Symphony No. 3, Danse Macabre, The Carnival of Animals, Concerto No. 2 for piano and orchestra, Concerto No. 3 for violin and orchestra, Concerto No. 1 for cello and orchestra and of course his opera Samson et Dalila.
Son vie: His musical life was very successful early in life and he never had to struggle before arriving at recognition. At the age of 22 he was already an established musician: the organist at the Medeline, the composer of two symphonies and having won an important prize. Berlioz called him "one of the greatest musicians of our epoch," and Anton Rubenstein said that he was the greatest organist in the world.
He showed his outstanding talent in many different ways. While only four-and-a-half years old, he made an appearance performing on piano the Beethoven sonata for violin and piano. He also took a score of a Grétry opera and read it through at sight. In his sixth year he read through the full orchestral score of Mozart's Don Giovanni as if it were a fairy tale. Saint-Saëns once wrote: "The artist who does not feel completely satisfied by elegant lines, by harmonious colors, and by a beautiful succession of chords does not understand the art of music."
As prolific he was as a composer, he also studied astronomy, physics, and natural history. He produced poetry and a play and he also wrote critical essays.

Subcollection: OboeIn this album, the Belgian oboist Joris Van den Hauwe performs a number of French compositions for oboe from the 19th and 20th centuries.
This recording includes some of the most important works of French music for oboe and piano. Some were written for student examinations at the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Paris. Others were dedicated to former teachers, for example, Camille Saint-Saëns's Sonata to ‘Monsieur Louis Bass, hautbois- Premier Solo de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire et de l'Opera' (tracks 11, 12 and 13).The ‘Sarabande et Allegro' by Gabriel Grovlez (tracks 14 and 15) and the ‘Fantaisie Pastorale' by Eugène Bozza (track 7) were both dedicated to the then highly acclaimed oboist Louis Bleuzet (1874-1941), also a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. Grovlez noted in his score: ‘A mon Ami Louis Bleuzet, Professeur au Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris'. The link between composers and performers was apparently very strong; these works are among the jewels of chamber music.
The oboe sonata (1947) by Henri Dutillieux (tracks 4, 5 and 6) is a jewel, as well, though the composer, born in 1916, thought otherwise. He disavowed this composition, along with other early works. Dutillieux dedicated this sonata to Monsieur Pierre Bayeux, also a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. Francis Poulenc dedicated his two sonatas on this album (tracks 1, 2 and 3 and 16, 17 and 18) to Sergei Prokofiev and Manuel de Falla. It is a conscious departure from a program following a timeline of the dates of the compositions. The reason for this is to present the music on the album as though in a concert, in a musical progression. The album begins, for example, with the most recent work. |

The Symphonic Suite The Fenlands by the English composer Arthur Wills formed the pièce de résistance of the Cathedral Brass concert that took place on September 13, 2008 in the Koepelkerk in Leeuwarden. In this captivating and challenging composition, the composer reaches a beautiful synthesis between the brass band and its natural musical partner: the organ. The program also contains two rarely performed organ works by the English composer Percy Whitlock: a simple Folksong and a virtuoso Divertimento. The closing movement of Camille Saint-Saens Organ Symphony forms a finale to this set.
“Just as I am” is an arrangement of a song by Wilfred Heaton, a piece from the
Salvation Army repertoire. “Angels Watching Over Me”, also comes from the Salvation Army, but was recorded in the studio in 2006, here included as a special bonus track. |
