Emily Pailthorpe (the youngest winner of the Gillet International oboe competition) joins Elaine Douvas (Principle Oboe of the Met Opera Orch.) to give an oboist’s-eye-view of opera.

Introduction by Emily Pailthorpe:

This is a CD for lovers of opera and lovers of the oboe alike. Indeed it is often the vocal quality of the oboe to which listeners and players are drawn. Whether reaching out from the pit orchestra in accompaniment, or taking centre stage for a chamber work, playing the oboe does feel like singing. Portrayed here are some of the great oboe moments in opera (Fidelio, Meistersinger) as well as many that we always wanted to stand up and sing ourselves! (For example the 'Queen of the Night' aria from Mozart's Magic Flute, the Duo from Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor.) Both the Diva and the gracious accompanist appear here - often swapping seamlessly from one role to the other.

My own love affair with opera grew when I was a student at The Juilliard School in New York, and my teacher Elaine Douvas gave me standing passes to come and hear the productions at the New York Metropolitan Opera, where she was principal oboe. It is a great pleasure to collaborate on this CD with her and her colleagues from the Met, and also to highlight the opera connection of players from the London CONCHORD Ensemble. Daniel Pailthorpe was principal flute at English National Opera for ten years and Andrea de Flammineis is principal bassoon at the Royal Opera House. I think that in this recording the operatic experience of all these players shines through.

Music by Richard Blackford Texts by St Francis of Assisi

Mirror of Perfection

Mirror of Perfection was commissioned by the Royal Ballet School and first performed at the Royal College of Music in March 1996. The words are settings of hitherto unknown poems by St Francis of Assisi and cover a wide expressive and emotional range: from hope to despair, longing to serene acceptance, love to bitterness, delight in Creation to an impassioned plea for peace amongst mankind. In the sixth of the seven parts the word "amore" appears no less than forty-eight times in a passacaglia setting of immense power and vocal dynamism. The cantata is no pious word-setting of an ancient saint; rather it is a passionate and vibrant evocation of a man who remains a symbol of hope in an age of spiritual emptiness and cultural decline.

It is paradoxical that the tiny chapel of the Porziuncula in which St Francis found solitude for much of his life was, four centuries later, overlayed in marble and gilt and enclosed within the massive superstructure of the church of Santa Maria delle Angeli. That the simplicity and goodness for which he stood should have survived the pomp of his canonization, the commercialization of Assisi and what in our world passes for glorification is nothing short of a miracle. Yet Francis remains a beacon of spiritual light in our technological, ego-based, psychologically-oriented twentieth century, and suggests that perhaps it is only poetry and the celebration of life in all its beauty and horror that offers any possibility of redemption as we face the new millennium.

During the composition I returned again and again to the image of Francis' little chapel, stripping away everything inessential, rhetorical, searching within for music that was a mirror of the saint's simple and profound delight in Creation.

Signum Classics are proud to release the second disc from the Vasari Singers on Signum Classics - Anthems for the 21st Century.

To celebrate its first twenty-five years of vibrant music making, the Vasari Singers commissioned ten composers to each write an anthem that would in their eyes reflect the state of the world at the start of the new millennium.

The brief indicated that each work should be suitable as an anthem in an Anglican cathedral Evensong, and that it could also look beyond any constraints of Liturgy or formal religious doctrine to embrace a wider, ecumenical audience. Perhaps something more humanistic that would have a voice in the multi-cultural, multi-faith societies of the new 21st century world?

6 - Fiona McWilliams, soprano / Daniel Burges, tenor
7 - Nicola Balzan, soprano / Julia Field, alto / David Jackson, tenor / Andrew Angus, bass
