Edinburgh Quartet

AboutListenReviews. The Edinburgh Quartet are Scotland's foremost exponents of new music; they have enjoyed a long relationship with Robert Crawford, who is now surely Scotland's musical elder statesman. His three quartets are given characteristically vivid readings on this recording. They offer a fascinating overview of Crawford's development over the last forty years and the second in particular - with its inspired wit and infectious musicality - deserves far greater renown.

David Wilde (piano)

AboutReviews. These three piano sonatas outline a progression from the despair of the Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2, written at the same time as the start of the famous ‘Heiligenstadt Testament’, when Ludwig van Beethoven’s realisation that his deafness was complete and permanent drove him to contemplate suicide, via his courageous fight back, brilliantly expressed in the irrepressible optimism of the Piano Sonata No. 21 in C, ‘Waldstein’, Op. 53 towards the lofty spiritual aspirations of the Piano Sonata No. 31 in A flat, Op. 110.

50 years after his victory in the International Liszt-Bartók Piano Competition David Wilde’s masterful interpretations are the fruit of a lifetime’s experience of studying and performing these towering masterpieces.

Carleton Etherington (organ)

Few ecclesiastical buildings in the United Kingdom can boast possessing two pipe organs; of those that can, fewer still can rival the quality of the ‘Grove’ and ‘Milton’ organs in Tewkesbury’s magnificent Norman abbey. It must have been something of a coup for the organ builders Michell & Thynne to hear the legendary organist William Thomas Best proclaim their latest instrument (on show at the Liverpool Exhibition of 1886) to be “the finest organ of its kind that I have ever played upon”. Their ‘model organ’ was designed to be as flexible as possible within the confines of the smallest number of stops, and the result was an immediate success: its first appearance at the 1885 Inventions Exhibition in London caused something of a sensation amongst the organ cognoscenti. The blind organist Alfred Hollins, not long out of college, was one of a number of players who gave regular recitals on the instrument both at the London exhibition, and subsequently the following year in Liverpool.
Tewkesbury Abbey’s other organ known as the ‘Milton’ is a happy example of enlargement and rebuilding over the decades, resulting in its current incarnation as a flexible and thoroughly contemporary instrument capable of interpreting a wide spectrum of the repertoire This recording demonstrates the unique qualities of each instrument in a programme of concert organ works by some of the finest organists and composers of the past two centuries.

For their fourth recording for Delphian, the boys and men of Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum turn their attention to that doyen of Anglican church music, Charles Villiers Stanford. Alongside familiar gems from the Evensong repertoire, sung with characteristic vigour and freshness, the programme includes the six littleknown Bible Songs, each followed by its associated hymn. Amongst the soloists - all members of the choir - is Laurence Kilsby, 2009 BBC Chorister of the Year, making his solo debut on disc.

Gordon Ferries guitars, lute & theorbo

Gordon Ferries’ fifth solo disc for Delphian spans two centuries of music for kings and courtiers. Performing on four instruments matched to the periods in question, and captured in sumptuous recorded sound, Ferries takes in the chansons and elegant counterpoint of sixteenth-century France’s cultivated humanist courts and the exquisite melancholy and refined dance forms from the private chambers of Louis XIV’s Versailles, and investigates the place of guitar music at the heart of the decadence, sexual intrigue and Baroque splendour of Charles II’s Restoration court.

Gordon Ferries has established himself as one of the UK’s leading exponents of the baroque guitar. He has performed in venues and festivals across the UK and in Europe both as a soloist and in ensembles including The Scottish Ensemble, The Scottish Early Music Consort and the Edinburgh Quartet.

Following the widespread critical acclaim of their debut recording, Alexander's Feast, Ludus Baroque brings their celebrated verve to Handel's Song for St Cecilia's Day. Coupled with his miniature cantata for tenor, Look Down, Harmonious Saint, which Handel wrote to supplement performances of Alexander's Feast, and with the Concerto Grosso in B flat, written in his fruitful autumn of 1739, Handel approaches the setting of this second text by John Dryden with the same extraordinary vividness of detail and metrical virtuosity as Alexander's Feast. 'What passion cannot music raise and quell?' the answer is that it can raise and quell them all: martial, erotic, sacred ... but as music had, in the beginning, been the divine principle of cosmic order, so, on the Final Day, it will be the force that dissolves the universe.

Another hallmark collaboration, this album was created by Concerto Caledonia and guests during a week’s residency in the Suffolk countryside at Aldeburgh. Traditional and original songs are interspersed with old and new tunes from Scotland, all informed by the group’s magpie diversity and by Britten’s folksong arrangements, which they found in Aldeburgh’s library. The resulting alchemy of nu-folk with an early music sensibility defies categorisation..

Concerto Caledonia

A chamber-scale Concerto Caledonia bring to life a key figure from the Golden Age of Scottish fiddle music,
when the publishing of fiddle music books was in full spate and the familiar forms of strathspey, reel and jig were taking shape.

'Red Rob' Mackintosh, named in the customary Gaelic fashion after the colour of his hair, found himself a place in the orchestra of the Edinburgh Musical Society and set up business as a teacher. (1783) was his first collection, published the year before his ill-fated move to Aberdeen, and it represents his desire both to understand the musical world around him as fully as possible, and to forge himself a career within it. Concerto Caledonia have realised the music from within its pages, shedding light on an age when, not yet 'traditional', such dance genres still bore the imprint of their individual composers.

Concerto Caledonia is one of Scotland's premiere earlymusic ensembles with a reputation for reviving littleknown but important music. With their third disc on Delphian the band bring vital part of Scotland's heritage to a wider audience with the music of 'Red Rob'.

Britten’s meeting with Rostropovich in 1960 was a watershed, the great Russian cellist becoming the primary collaborator of his later years, and inspiring a whole series of masterworks. Among them are the three suites for solo cello, written as a conscious homage to those of Bach (there were originally to have been six). Intriguingly, the Britten scholar Paul Kildea sees the first as a coda to the War Requiem, the second as a snapshot of a lifetime of musical obsessions, and the third as reaching back to much earlier works and suffused with primordial Russian melody. The young virtuoso Philip Higham, one of the only British cellists in generations to have won top prizes at three major international competitions, brings a youthful vigour and deep intelligence to these seminal masterpieces, resulting in performances of commanding authority and intensity.

Choir of Merton College, Oxford
Peter Phillips & Benjamin Nicholas conductors
Anna Steppler organ

The beginning of Advent is celebrated with a particular solemnity at Merton. For its second recording the college choir explores the musical riches that adorn this most special time in the church’s year, centring on a newly commissioned sequence of Magnificat antiphons from seven leading composers.

Founded in 2008, the new Choir of Merton College, Oxford is led by newly appointed Organist and fulltime Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas, and Reed Rubin Director of Music Peter Philips. The choir is rapidly emerging as a major force in collegiate choral music. The disc is recorded in the beautiful environs of Merton College Chapel, which has stood at the heart of the College as a place of worship for almost 750 years.
