Irene Drummond, soprano
Iain Burnside, piano

For many years Irene Drummond has been the leading exponent of contemporary song in Scotland. With her partner Iain Burnside -- peerless in this music -- she offers a fascinating snapshot of her repertoire on this recording. From the rarified sparseness of James MacMillan, to the sustained luminosity of Paul Mealor, and the emotionally charged dramatic outbursts of John McLeod, The Shadow Side explores a world of half-lights and visceral intensity.

This year 2010 British Composer Award winner Rory Boyle celebrates his sixtieth birthday. Young virtuoso pianist James Willshire’s debut recording explores the full gamut of Boyle’s ompositional personality - from the cragginess of his finely wrought Sonata to the intensely human lyricism of Tatty’s Dancing (itself a sixtieth birthday present for Boyle's wife).

This ‘songbook’ is unique to the Schola Cantorum choristers of Tewkesbury Abbey. “Essentially, it's a showcase for the Abbey trebles,” their Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas explains. “We’ve been assembling our own Songbook for quite a while now - the songs the trebles sing, from time to time, in boys-only concerts, and that they are taught in individual singing lessons. I’ve always been keen to build each boy up as a soloist, not necessarily with the express idea of them singing lots of solos, but so that they can learn to sing in a soloistic way.”

This is evident most of all in the distinctive singing of 11- year-old Laurence Kilsby, whose gifts won him the BBC Chorister of the Year competition in 2009. On this recording, he features as soloist in two Shelley settings by Roger Quilter, the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria and in John Ireland’s beautiful, sincerely-felt Passiontide motet Ex Ore Innocentium from 1944.

Four concerts at 2009’s Edinburgh International Festival offered us a great opportunity to draw on our repertoire of the last 17 years, and to invite a few special guests to add some new discoveries along the way. This CD presents a selection of favourite moments from those evenings at the Hub, showing just some of the fun that we had there; everything you hear on this recording happened on stage in the shows (except the gun going off in the Tattoo at the Castle next door) … It's guaranteed live, and all the better for it!

Choir of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh
Duncan Ferguson director
Nicholas Wearne organ

The Choir of St Mary's Cathedral is unique in Scotland in maintaining daily choral services in the Anglican tradition, and enjoys an international reputation for its daily services, broadcasts, recordings, concerts, and tours. The Cathedral was the first in the United Kingdom to allow girls to join boys as trebles in 1978 and then, in 2006, to allow female altos to sing alongside countertenors in the choir. Appointed in 2008, Organist and Master of the Music Duncan Ferguson has been instrumental in establishing the choir's status as one of UK's foremost cathedral choirs, whose recording catalogue now includes some six discs on Delphian.

Celebrating his 50th birthday in 2012, Gabriel Jackson has had a long and close association with the Choir of St Mary's Cathedral. This is the choir's second disc of Jackson's choral music on Delphian, and under Ferguson's dynamic direction they present a sequence of recording premieres that centre on the florid Hymn to St Margaret of Scotland, which has been newly written for the choir. A fitting celebration for Jackson's half-century, the disc opens a window on the luminous sound-world of one of Britain's finest choral composers.

Jean Maillard's life is shrouded in mystery, and his music is rarely heard today. Yet in his own time his works were both influential and widely known: indeed, the musicologist François Lesure held him to be one of the most important French composers of his era.
Who better, then, than Rory McCleery's Marian Consort to give this composer's rich and varied output its first dedicated recording? Their characteristically precise and yet impassioned performances bring out both the network of influence in which Maillard's music participated its Josquin-esque pedigree, and influence on successors including Lassus and Palestrina and its striking, individual beauty.

Scotland’s troubadours Fires of Love follow King James VI on a varied journey through song and instrumental music. In the sixteenth century Scotland appeared outwardly to be musically bruised - not necessarily so … As our musicians deftly weave their way through Scotland’s rich tapestry of historic manuscripts, they unveil attractive unsophisticated melodies, often heavily imbued with the French style.

On their arrival in London, James and his musicians would have been taken aback by the highly active theatre scene. Shakespeare’s texts give rise to compelling settings, from the plaintive And will he not come again, poignantly rendered here by Frances Cooper, to the risqué joviality of St Valentine’s Day.

As the Scots courtier-musicians nimbly traded French influence for London’s ‘Englished’ Italian style, one wonders: did they regretfully look homewards - Remember me my deir?

Based in Scotland, Fires of Love has been performing in venues and festivals around Britain since 1998. The repertoire centres on lute and guitar songs, set amongst instrumental ensembles, solos, recent discoveries and the group’s own arrangements. The music spans the breadth of Europe and Instruments include lutes, archlute, theorbo, vihuela, baroque guitar, fourcourse guitar, recorders and percussion. The group has made two previous recordings for Delphian: Love and Reconquest: Music of Renaissance Spain (DCD34003) and Chansons à Plaisir: Music from the time of Adrian Le Roy (1520-1598) (DCD34063), both released to high critical acclaim.

Women are at the heart of this disc: warm-hearted South American mothers, women on the town, little girls hanging scared on their mothers’ coat-tails, blondes kissing fruitsellers in the Buenos Aires rain … The disc brings together two areas of repertoire which Mr McFall’s Chamber have often combined in performance - Valentina Montoya Martínez’s songs of life as a Chilean exile, and the music of the tango nuevo, including songs and instrumental interludes from Ástor Piazzolla’s ‘operita’ María de Buenos Aires, where the character of María represents the tango itself.

‘La Pasionaria’ was the nickname of Dolores Ibárruri, a Basque communist leader during the Spanish Civil War. Likewise both engaged and passionate, the songs brought together here - including Valentina’s deeply personal odes to her late mother and to the political activist Sola Sierra - pay tribute to the private and public lives of women across Spain and Latin America.

Fifty years after his victory in the International Liszt- Bartók Piano Competition, David Wilde - student of Solomon and of Nadia Boulanger - brings to the studio a lifetime’s experience with the music of Franz Liszt. The diabolically difficult Mephisto Waltz No 1 is dispatched in a reading which overflows with personality and conviction, while Funérailles, too, is compellingly reimagined by an artist who cleaves to an earlier generation’s ideals of recreating both the self and the music in every inspired performance.
