Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Piano Having graduated from the State Academy of Music in Sofia and specialised with world-known pianist Yvonne Lefebure in Paris, after which she furthered her studies at the Juilliard School of Music (New York), Pavlina Dokovska is among the most celebrated Bulgarian pianists enjoying a brilliant concert career. She has included in the CD her interpretations of three popular works by Robert Schumann, an author who holds a significant place in the pianist's repertoire. Dokovska possesses keen sensitivity and is particularly skilled at colouring the sound, all of these qualities bringing her close to Schumann's emotional style and idiom. For this reason the CD fascinates the listener with the passion of his music, its emotionality and multitude of musical images, which the pianist models out with the precision and security of a master who has long overcome the technical problems (the pieces require specific piano technique) and has deeply penetrated in the musical text. Over this there appear the brilliant Schumane |

Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Piano Pianist Ludmil Angelov offers very interesting and original interpretations of some of Chopin's little known early works. As a performer who constantly looks for new opportunities for his artistic realisation, Ludmil Angelov demonstrates in this recital release his abilities as pianist of a style of his own - with original conceptions and analyses of each of the performed works, each interpreted in an individual manner, fascinating with the softness and flexibility of tone, melody and harmony. His virtuosity, brilliance, warmth and lyricism which impress the listener, combine with a multi-coloured palette of sound nuances. All this is in confirmation of the successful career of the pianist, first-prize winner of the World Piano Masters International Competition of Monte Carlo, 1997, who has toured extensively on the world's major stages. The present release received the GRAND PRIX DU DISQUE FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN award in Warszaw, 2000. |

Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk Music A legend from Kyustendil region has it: a poor woman had naughty and always hungry children. She got tired of working for the daily bread, which was never enough for her children; she got tired of being kept responsible for their mischief and cursed them. She herself turned into a welkya (night tawny owl). But then her anger receded and she keeps looking for her children to the present day.
This legend has inspired Theodosii Spassov to write his highly impressive piece Welkya. The mythical, the invisible, the impossible, the unexpected turns into a sound reality. And it seems this is exactly that makes Theodosii Spassov unique. Even in the pronouncedly folk pieces his jokes and musical witticisms surprise and amaze with their rich imagination and "jumps" from one genre to another. The artist feels pleasure to "juggle" with them, to "play" with his kaval. And thus everyone is involved in this game, both the musicians and the listeners!
Performed by: Theodosii Spassov (kaval, vocals, bagpipe), Yanka Rupkina (vocals), Boika Velkova (recitatives), Georgi Petrov (gadulka), Valentin Yankov (tamboura), Georgi Donchev (bass), Stoyan Yankulov (percussions) |

Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk Music The famous choir The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices conducted by Dora Hristova again conveys its challenge to Bulgarian folk music lovers, this time with their interpretation of songs from the most widely spread and cherished customs, those at Christmas and at St. Lazar's Day. The songs sung at Christmas and St. Lazar's Day lend specific colour in the repertoire of many ensembles. This programme is a successful attempt to select songs which represent a comparison between the two customs.
Christmas is celebrated on the day when the church commemorates Christ's nativity. Yet the deep meaning of the custom is in the ancient pagan beliefs about the birth of the new sun. There are young men-Christmas-carollers and their leader is always an older man, called stanenik. According to the custom, the time for Christmas celebration is specifically set - from midnight till sunrise. The Christmas carollers make their rounds always starting to the east. They sing songs glorifying the host in every house and bless him for health and fertility. In their turn, the hosts present them with Christmas ring-shaped buns decorated with a coin and meat, beans, etc.
The celebrations at St. Lazar's Day are also connected with the well-wishing for health and fertility. This custom is celebrated one week before Easter, at St. Lazarus's day. The main participants in the celebrations are young girls, lazarki, lead by an elder one, called a god-mother, leader. They make their rounds in the village yards, dancing horo dances and singing songs, according to the hosts' age and status. Like during the Christmas-tide celebrations the hosts give them money, flour, eggs, etc.
Both customs follow a strict pattern, which has been observed here by the producer, Nikolai Kaufmann. His is the idea for this programme. Even though some other composers were also invited to include their works in the programme (Peter Lyondev, Kosta Kolev, Ivan Vulev), the listener still perceives it as an inseparable piece. |

Collection: Choral Collection Subcollection: Choir Among the numerous works of the great English composer Benjamin Britten the opuses associated with the English religious musical traditions from the Renaissance epoch deserve a special mention. Among them stands out Missa Brevis, performed by the Sofia Boys' Choir and the organist Atanas Atanassov with remarkable musicality and vivid portraying of each of the five movements of the Missa. To combine Britten with the Italian composer Pergolesi is an excellent idea of Adriana Blagoeva, the conductor, who has worked out in details and in a very good style the poly-movement composition Stabat Mater - a classical example in the genre. The solo parts performed by the famous opera singer Hristina Angelakova, mezzo-soprano, and the soprano Theodora Gabrovska are incorporated in the magnificent sounding of the children's choir. Pergolesi's music captivates with its melody, harmonic symmetry, contrasting character and mastership in interlacing the motifs in a polyphonic construction, all that sung in excellent sonority |

Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk Music North Bulgaria is a region with fascinating folklore obtained by the interaction of the traditions of several groups: local population, Balkan people and immigrants from Eastern Thrace. Even during the Turkish domination in Bulgaria the Danube river served as a natural link with Central and Eastern Europe. That is why, along with the old-time songs and tunes, one can also hear others, in which the European influence is felt. These peculiarities of the North-Bulgarian folk-musical idiom are conspicuously present in the recordings of the "HORO" Orchestra from the town of Rousse. Vassil Purvanov, its conductor, is from Lom, a small Danubean town in Northwest Bulgaria. This explains the presence of some Northern motifs in the horo tunes. Irrespective of his classical music education (he graduated from the State Academy of Music in Sofia majoring in clarinet), he has always performed folk music only. This was how he established the best folk orchestra in North Bulgaria, which has preserved its original style throughout the long years of creative existence without yielding to modern influences.
The "HORO" Orchestra includes: Vassil Purvanov (clarinet, saxophone, wooden pipe, occarina), Ivailo Petrov (accordion), Nikolai Deskov (accordion), Lyubomir Hristov (accordion), Dimiter Hodjev (guitar), Yavor Minchev (guitar, tambura), Dimiter Petrov (double-bass), Dimiter Tsaparkov (keyboards), Peter Avramov (big drum)
Soloists: Elka Boneva, Nedelcho Vulev, Georgi Androv, Mariana Androva |

Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Harp The harpist Youliana Tochkova (b. 1965), in partnership with Collegium Musicum - Bankia and the French conductor Dominic Patrouilleau, presents two of her compositions among the other works in this release. Her idea is to achieve full mutual interaction and contact between author and performer. A graduate of the State Academy of Music, Sofia (1989), where she majored in harp, piano and composition, she directed her creative interests to the combination of contemporary compositional techniques and methods with the Bulgarian folk music and its unique features. Thus in the Arpeggio for harp Tochkova builds up her composition upon the modifications of one arpeggio-like movement and their disposition in the musical space, searching for effects and through her knowledge in electro-acoustics and other modern forms of sound-producing and sound-reproduction. With the Concerto for Harp & Orchestra Tochkova adds an impressive opus to her compositions. The solo pieces in the CD also include the romantic in its emotional |

Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Piano The CD brings together five Bulgarian composers who represent the generation of the 1980s and 90s of the 20th century. What unites them is their aesthetic taste, their attitude towards reality and their manner of composing, related to techniques and compositional thinking of the end of this century. All of them, with the exception of Georgi Arnaoudov, live and work abroad, but their varied interests always have a common crossing point called Bulgaria, where their works enjoy recognition and popular acclaim. Impressions from Spain, in Alexander Kandov's "Las mariposas nocturnas", from the Caucasus Mountains in Bojidar Spassov's "Wasserfalle", the search of new style in "Klavierstuk I" by Marin Goleminov (son of the great Bulgarian composer Marin Goleminov), "Incarnation dans la lumiere" by Georgi Arnaoudov, and "Preludium II" by Boyan Vodenicharov illustrate the authors as sensitive, original creative artists, looking for the connection between past and present and casting a glance towards the future. Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk Music Trio "Bulgarka-Penev" has undertaken the ambitious task to represent the vocal variety of Bulgarian musical folklore. Snejana Borissova, Maya Dencheva and Stoyanka Boneva, together with composer Dimiter Penev lead us brilliantly through the Shoppe region, Thrace, the Pirin Mountains region, North Bulgaria, Strandja and the Rhodope Mountains. The songs are now jocular, now playful, now drawling and lyrical. The three singers are from different folk regions: Snejana Borissova is from the Shoppe region, Maya Dencheva comes from North Bulgaria and Stoyanka Boneva from the Pirin Mountains. The credit for the unity of the three different styles of performance, for the covering of other fascinating folk regions goes to Dimiter Penev. His compositional approach is as close as possible to the original version of each song. And the matching partnership of the musicians from the Bolyari Orchestra increases the feeling for a multi-coloured home-woven rug with its unique colours and patterns. |
