In Greek, the word signifies the reshaping (ana) of a form or image (Morfe). Since the Renaissance, artists have reshaped and experimented with perspectives on images. However, such reshaping can also occur in music, and this idea constitutes the concept of this album. The starting point of this album are compositions by Chopin (I) and Ravel (II), which are subsequently transformed into contemporary idiom and “perspective”, in the Chopiniata by Clément Doucet (I/1) or Anamorfosi by Salvatore Sciarrino (II/1).

(text by Salvatore Sciarrino after Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi)

Attracted by the borderline experiences and solitary forms of a gradually darkening Renaissance, these compositions by Salvatore Sciarrino revolve around three figures from the 16th century, all of whom lost control in the field of tension between feverish living and spiritual demise, between brightness and damnation, inspired, driven and obsessed. The famous poet Torquato Tasso describes in three authentic letters (Lettere poetici) his tormenting visions of goblins and phantoms. This is all reflected in Sciarrino's intense, whispering, whirring music, in which silence is as significant as the birth of sound, "Almost naked, sober," remarks the composer, "and that is an important element when one is listening to music. Only in this way can it bore its way into the flesh."

The method of composition, which has recourse to existing musical material, reworking it into a new composition, figures as a central principle of occidental music history. This applies particularly to the mass and motet compositions of the Renaissance, when this method of adopting and reworking existing music represented one of the key features of musical production. An especially vivid example - which however remains singular in its appearance - for the continuous engagement with a certain musical “theme” is the English “In Nomine“ genre dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
This tradition started out with the six-voice mass Gloria tibi Trinitas by John Taverner (around 1495-1545), composed no later than around 1528. To the words “In nomine Domini” the section of the Benedictus (the lyrics are: “Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini” - “blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) has a salient four-voice section, which, as cantus firmus in the alto part, contains the antiphon “Gloria tibi Trinitas” quoted in its entirety.

Light and air in a state of constant, subtly detailed movement: this is also the nature of Sciarrino‘s music, as if it had soaked up all those delicate colours and adopted the mobility of air, captured its nocturnal buzzing-sounds with a net veil and transformed them into fluctuating sonorities, roaring and murmuring. One could almost think that the flickering odours of Mediterranean landscapes had entered the fleeting images of such music. Vague suggestions emerging from an old cultural realm, transposed into the present, lingering briefly and then disappearing once more. An interplay of sound and silence, free-floating fragments no longer within the domain of the unambiguous: one listens to them spellbound. (Lothar Knessl)

He searches for exeptional situations that throw the listeners back upon themselves. These can be deliberately designed to lead right to the edge of madness, but also to relaxed medidation. Just as silence counteracts the noise of everyday life, slowness is also a counterdesign to an accelerated present, and a reduction to a minimum of material is a response to the masses of data in the digital age. Salvatore Sciarrino, probably Italy's most important living composer, accepted a commission from the Italian state broadcaster RAI to compose the music for a 100-part TV series of the Divina Commedia. At the same time, he also created an orchestral version for the concert hall: Sui poemi concentrici for Soloists and Orchestra. The duration shrank to only a tenth of the original 15 hours, but the size of the forces remained the same, with the exception of the choir.
