A legend from Kyustendil region has it: a poor woman had naughty and always hungry children. She got tired of working for the daily bread, which was never enough for her children; she got tired of being kept responsible for their mischief and cursed them. She herself turned into a welkya (night tawny owl). But then her anger receded and she keeps looking for her children to the present day.
This legend has inspired Theodosii Spassov to write his highly impressive piece Welkya. The mythical, the invisible, the impossible, the unexpected turns into a sound reality. And it seems this is exactly that makes Theodosii Spassov unique. Even in the pronouncedly folk pieces his jokes and musical witticisms surprise and amaze with their rich imagination and "jumps" from one genre to another. The artist feels pleasure to "juggle" with them, to "play" with his kaval. And thus everyone is involved in this game, both the musicians and the listeners!

This third in succession CD of kaval-player Theodosii Spassov, an unusual phenomenon in the music-performing art, is an emanation of love for music and improvisation. At the same time, the term bratimene means spiritual closeness between people of common souls, tastes, moral and aesthetic values. That is why the virtuoso kaval-player and improviser has made a selection of pieces recorded between 1983 and 1998, on different occasions, with different friends from the circle of musicians, poets and artists to which he has always belonged. Some of them are his own compositions that have made him famous. The release presents a unique fusion of folk and jazz music, of bright musical personalities, who perform with an unmatched feeling for ensemble. These are 13 brilliant compositions and performances that bring real aesthetic joy and satisfaction.

Petar Ralchev is a a remarkable virtuoso not only in the sphere of folk music but also of classical music. While still a student, he was awarded the first prize at the Young Musicians Competition in Chirpan, Bulgaria, and later on received the special award at the International Competition in Klingental, Germany. Together with the violinist Georgi Yanev he founded the Orpheus Orchestra. He takes part in various orchestras and projects performing with almost all leading folk and jazz musicians (Ivo Papazov, Delcho Mitov, Stoyan Yankulov, among others). Audiences throughout Europe and North America have admired Mr. Ralchev's performing and he was included in the History of Accordion, published in France in 1991 by Francois Billard and Didier Roussin. So far Petar Ralchev has released 9 albums, both solo and in co-work with other prominent musicians. The new CD (his 10th in number) includes brilliant renditions of folk music from Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania and France. |
