VICTORIA BOND - COMPOSITIONS

VICTORIA BOND - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD197
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

American composer Victoria Bond, whose stage music and chamber works enjoy great popularity in the USA, is also famous as conductor in her home country, Europe and Asia. The CD includes seven of her compositions each of which highlights various aspects of her talent. Bond is very good at logically structuring the small forms imbuing them at the same time with emotionality and musical ideas. For example, the wonderful piece Batucada, variations on a Brazilian samba for piano, or Sonata for Cello and Piano, the expressive means of which have originated from some techniques characteristic of 20th century music like Schoenberg's serial technique. Weddings & Bar Mitzvahs, built on a Jewish folk song with a beautiful melody is also an excellent concert piece. The Dreams of Flying demonstrates the composer's skill in the combination of timbres and the development of basic motifs, in interweaving the voices.

Performed by: Georgy Valtchev (violin), Nikolai Gagov (violin), Valentin Gerov (viola), Christo Tanev (violoncello), Anna Stoytcheva (piano), Kremena Acheva (flute)

The young performers Georgy Valtchev and Lora Tchekoratova present an interesting programme with works by Bartok.
Born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Georgy Valtchev studied the violin under Boyanka Shopova, Vladimir Vladigerov, Mitcho Dimitrov and Prof. Dora Ivanova. In the United States he continues his studies at the Julliard School as a student of Dorothy Delay and Masao Kawasaki. He achieved his first international success at age sixteen when he won the Grand Prize of the "Kocian" International Violin Competition in then Czechoslovakia. He has been honoured with a number of awards, among them the First Prize of the Ducrest International Competition in Lafayette, Louisiana, and the Special Prize of the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition in Switzerland.
Lora Tchekoratova began her piano studies in Sofia as a pupil of the legendary piano pedagogue Lydia Kuteva. Later she studied with Vessela Marinova and Prof. Jenny Zaharieva. In 1992, she moved to the United States and become the first Bulgarian musician to hold a Doctorate from Juilliard as a student of Seymour Lipkin. She won numerous awards at international competitions, including the first prize of the 1996 Washington International Competition for Pianists. Her solo debut was at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Although they perform as soloists on their own, Lora Tchekoratova and Georgy Valtchev often appear together in performances in the USA and in many countries throughout Europe and Asia. Along with the traditional repertoire for violin and piano, they also perform works by 20th century composers.

Recorded at Patrych Sound Studios, Bronx, New York in December 2006 and January 2007
