6 , 7, 9 - 43 Ensemble 10/10 / Clark Rundell, conductor-
8 - Pamela Nash, clavichord
Gary Carpenter’s witty and dramatic writing style has featured in numerous films - including The Wicker Man and The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy - as well as on TV, in the opera house and concert hall.
The works on this portrait disc cover his period as composer in residence for the RLPO’s specialist new music group, Ensemble 10/10, and include the increasingly riotous Mozart tribute, Ein Musikalisches Snookerspiel for wind octet; After Braque, a sonic tour de force with a line-up including 2 saxophones, mandolin and accordion; Van Assendelft’s Vermeer, for clavichord; and Die Flimmerkiste - German slang for 'the flicks', a record of a riotous two years spent in small-town Germany. |

This disc spans Dillon's career - from early piano caprice Dillug-Kefitsah, and the phantasmagorical sequence Traumwerk, for violin and piano, to brooding piano duo black/ nebulae - with pianist Hiroaki Takenouchi - and piano quintet the soadie waste, which takes its name from a dilapidated Glaswegian dance hall on the site of a former chemical-works; it was said that during 'hot' dance sessions the locals could detect chemical seepage.

"Like a modern-day codex. Should nothing survive from the previous decade of British music save this, scholars would still be able to form a reliable picture of the diverse compositional activity of those years." |

Subcollection: Piano and Clarinet This CD features eight premiere recordings:
• Three additional songs of Les Illuminations
• In memoriam Dennis Brain
• Rondo Concertante
• Elegy for Strings
• Variations for Solo Piano
• and the completion of Movements for a Clarinet Concerto.
The stunning performance of Les Illuminations by world-renowned soprano Sandrine Piau has been made possible thanks to the French label Naïve kindly releasing Sandrine from her exclusive recording contract for this CD. The ‘Clarinet Concerto’ was written for jazz star Benny Goodman, but Britten never completed it as the sketches were impounded by US Customs in 1941. It was Britten’s intention to resume work on the piece in 1943 but he never got round to it and so it remained a fragment, not performed until edited by Colin Matthews in 1990.
Britten intended the additional three songs recorded here-also setting Rimbaud-to be part of Les Illuminations. Sandrine Piau’s love affair with the music of Benjamin Britten blossomed when she was chosen to sing the role of Flora in Britten’s Turn of the Screw at Radio France.
In memoriam Dennis Brain for 4 horns, strings and tubular bells commemorates the great horn player for whom Britten wrote his Serenade for tenor, horn and strings. He died in a car crash in 1957. |
