SIMEON PIRONKOV - COMPOSITIONS

SIMEON PIRONKOV - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD160
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

Simeon Pironkov ranks among the most famous Bulgarian composers from the second half of the 20th century. His works in various genres are performed both at home and at prestigious musical festivals for contemporary music in Berlin, Warsaw, Zagreb, Budapest, etc. He is the author of compositions commissioned by full orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo performers. Pironkov's style is characterised by exquisitely coloured melody, flexibility of metre and rhythm influenced by the Bulgarian folk music, delicacy of orchestration and emotional variety, being the result of the sensitivity and richness of his inner world. The works selected for this release represent the evolution of the composer's style. Requiem for an Unknown Young Man is a landmark work in his creative biography, extensively performed by the Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble. The solo cello sonata Entrata e capriccio is an original virtuoso improvisation with an excellent form, and the music of String Quartet No. 3 (premiered in 1986 in Berlin) is reserved, now tender, now melancholic, cut through by metro-rhythmical and melancholic accents. Most characteristic is Kammersinfonie for 11 soloists, composed in the USA, an expression of maturity and creative imagination.

Performed by: String Quartet: N. Jeleva (violin), N. Gagov (violin), O. Stanchev (viola), K. Bespalov (cello) [1] - [3]; Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble conductor Plamen Djouroff [4]; Anatoli Krastev (cello) [5] - [6]; conductor Simeon Pironkov - junior [7] - [11]

GEORGI ARNAOUDOV - COMPOSITIONS

GEORGI ARNAOUDOV - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD187
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

Georgi Arnaoudov is a composer who stood out in the generation which entered Bulgarian musical life in the 1980s. His works are marked by originality evident in both the manner of structuring and the characteristic features of sound-combinations, modes and timbres. He is the author of symphonies, concerto opuses, ballets and a number of chamber-instrumental works. What interests him most are the deep roots of Bulgarian folk music, Gregorian religious art, as well as the ancient Asian cultures. For his CD he has selected some of his most popular compositions, which have been included in the repertoire of recording companies and a number of Bulgarian instrumentalists. Titles like "The Circle of Rites", "Ritual" suggest the author's ambition to give new musical meaning to ancient messages, carried on throughout the centuries. Each of the compositions begins in a peculiar way, from one tone only; then it becomes a thread, which - being drawn out, twisted and re-twisted - turns the initial "silence" and inaction into an exciting musical flow and ends into the "silence" from the beginning again.

Dimitar Tapkoff was born in Sofia in 1929. He graduated in composition under the great Bulgarian composer Marin Goleminov. He has worked in succession in the Bulgarian National Radio, Sofia National Opera, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the State Academy of Music, the Ministry of Culture. Currently he is Professor in composition at the Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv, and Director of the Sofia Music Weeks International Music Festival.
Tapkoff began writing music when the post-war avant-guard was fully embraced by a part of the Bulgarian composers, while others supported the national art, and still others followed the traditions of classical "modern". He is closest to the third group and admits that: "I would not say that I am a champion of a modern concept about music. I claim that I stand behind a music concept of my own, no matter what the fashionable trends are." He has always stressed on the possibility to use well-known structures and forms, at the same time incorporating music, which is close to the contemporary listener. His works have often been performed in Bulgaria and abroad. Tapkoff is holder of a number of home and international distinctions, among which the First Prize of the International Composer's Rostrum in Paris '76 for his Peace Cantata. He has composed works in different genres: concertos, overtures, symphonies, solo and choir songs, etc.

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 2

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 2
ID: GD252
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestra

The second CD of the series presenting the contemporary Bulgarian composers, project of the Soros Center for the Arts, includes music by five representatives of three generations of tonal masters. Their compositions demonstrate a rich palette of ideas and aesthetic preferences, so characteristic of the Bulgarian school from the last three decades of the 20th century. Alexander Tanev, known for his excellent choral works and cantatas, often combines in his symphonic works academic principles of construction with the most modern resources of our century, while the younger Alexander Kandov looks for a new expressiveness and has directed himself to original themes in his symphonic works. Simeon Pironkoff's Night Music is among the author's most representative and bright opuses, appealing to the listener with the refined sound and elegant melodic line. The same can be said about the Fantasia by Plamen Djouroff, a prominent Bulgarian composer and conductor. Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Haendel are representative of Krassimir Kyurkchiiski's art of composing. The author demonstrates his mastery of handling the Baroque forms, introducing in them the outlook and interpretation of a contemporary musician.

Plamen Djouroff, conductor

Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1962. Since its foundation 40 years ago it has been conducted by Vassil Kazandjiev (1964-1978), Emil Tabakov (1979-1988) and its present conductor - Plamen Djouroff, who has been connected with the work of the ensemble since 1988. Sofia Soloists has preserved throughout the years its image of an elite formation with an exceptionally rich repertoire from the 16-20th centuries, including works by Bulgarian composers. The present release features four pieces composed during the 1970s-1990s. Symphony No 4 by Lyubomir Pipkov (1904-1974) was written in the last years of the composer's life (1970). For this composition his choice fell on the chamber expression of the string orchestra. Meditations by Lazar Nikolov (b. 1922) was written for string quartet (1970) and a year later it was revised for string orchestra. Microsymphony (1922) by Dimitar Tapkoff (b. 1929) brings out the most concentrated expression of the symphonic model. The work is dedicated to Arthur Honegger and the use of his initials A, H has not only tonal and constructive role but also introduces semantically the question of tradition and stability of musical values. Requiem for an Unknown Young Man for 13 stringed instruments (1968) by Simeon Pironkov (1927-1999) combines the European liturgical choral tradition and the composition and technical devices of aleatory music. Sofia Soloists' conductor, Plamen Djouroff (b. 1949), graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia. He furthered his studies in conducting at the Vienna Academy of Music under Karl Osterreicher. Besides being conductor of Sofia Soloists, Mr. Djouroff is also one of the outstanding Bulgarian composers. His works have been performed and released in Bulgaria and abroad.
