Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: AccordionCycle of chromatic preludes «Thinking of Bach» for an organ is very successfully transformed for a bayan by a brilliant performer S. Shmelkov. There is a sense of Bach in each piece of this composition Communication slight tonalities in the letters of his surname (BACH), accepted in letter designations of notes (Si a flat, La, Do and Si). The same notes appear in each part of a cycle and, of course, the composition plan is reflected in its stylistics (R. Ledenyov).
Three piece in „mauvais” Style for a bayan with microphone one of S. Berinsky's most extravagant compositions for a bayan. Titles of parts are unusual and absurd: the first part - „L’AMOUR”, the second part - „Khoo?!” (But not in the meaning - „kho“), the third part - „Partando Vulp…” (Nobody knows what it means). «Three pieces - is a gloomy, depressive composition. When it has been written, I suddenly felt down and depressed». (S. Berinsky).
Four stories for the four flutes with a bayan is the first composition in literature of a bayan for such an ensemble. All the composition is impregnated by Russian national intonations, and in the third part the beginning of Russian national song «the Guelder-rose with a raspberry early has blossomed» and intonations of the Byzantian music are clearly heard. «In each story it would be desirable to show not only the character, an image, but to tell a story with the help musical resources» (O. Chistokhina).
Shmelkov Semion was born in Kemerovo. He came from the family of professional musicians. He began learning to play the bayan when he was 6. His teacher was V. V. Shmelkov. Semion finished the speacial music school of the Glinks Novosibirsk State Conservatory under the professor A. V. Krupin.
Now he is a student of the Gnessins Russian Musical Academy under the professor F. R. Lips. Semion Shmelkov isa ia laureate of the international competitions and he has Grand Prix VI of the international competition of the national music instruments "Cup of the North".
Semion performs in different cities of Russia. He was a grant-aided student of "The Junior talents of Kuzbass", the Fund "The Junior talents of Siberia", the ministry of the Russian Federation, the charity International Fund by Vladimir Spivakov. There are numbers articles in different magazines and newspapers about him. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Piano and CelloFranck, C: Cello Sonata in A major
Lekeu: Cello Sonata in G
Ysaye: Cello Sonata Op. 28 /Rêve d'enfant, Op. 14
Raphael Wallfisch (cello) & John York (piano)
Raphael Wallfisch and John York perform sonatas by Eugene Ysaye, and two fellow Belgian composers most associated with him, Cesar Franck and Guillaume Lekeu.
Cesar Franck’s ever popular Sonata in A is given a stirring performance here by the Wallfisch/York duo in their first recording for Cello Classics. Recorded in the peace and tranquillity of Champs Hill, West Sussex this is the first recording Rahael made using the Stradivarius cello that once beolnged to his former teacher, Amaryllis Fleming. By a happy coincidence the wonderful studio in Champ’s Hill has recently aquired the painting of Amaryllis by Augustus John, which was hung behind the musicians and watched over the entire proceedings!
Less familiar, even to violinists, for whom it was written, is Guillaume Lekeu’s Sonata in G major. The composer lived to be only 24 years old, but in that short time wrote some of the most passionately lyrical music of the age. This is a work that deserves to be far better known.
The remaining works on this recording are both by Ysaye himself. The Sonata for unaccompanied cello is a real tour-de-force and seldom heard on the concert stage. The Reve d’Enfant is played here in an arrangement for cello and piano by John York. |
