Duo Sollini - Barbatano, Pianoforte gran coda Steinway and Sons
Duo Sollini: Marco Sollini, piano / Salvatore Barbatano, piano
In this recording the Sollini - Barbatano Piano Duo (who already released two Concerto Classics productions such as Gioachino Rossini's "Complete chamber music with piano" CD 2076, and Sergej Rachmaninov's "Piano works for four and six hands" CD 2073) performs the world premiere of the Sinfonia in F major for piano at four hands transcribed by Pietro Mascagni and discovered in 2004 by Marco Sollini himself. With the advent of the 150th birth anniversary of Pietro Mascagni, this CD presents the 13 solo piano pieces too by the great opera composer, among which the first version of the famous Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana as well as the world premiere of three pieces: "Mio primo Valzer" (My first Valzer) arranged by Anton Seidel, a fragment of "Un pensiero a San Francisco" (A thought to San Francisco) and "New World processional (Triumphal March)". The introduction is by Cesare Orselli, reviewer and music historian, one of the best and talented specialist of Pietro Mascagni. |

With its monumental structure, Alla gioja looks like a typical conservatory work. Many decades later an older Mascagni judged it to be «a composition beyond my reach» despite «the great beauty that it contains». The only exception was salvaging the baritone's romanza for "Qui sedes" in the Messa di Gloria. For almost fifty years, the scores for orchestra and for voice and piano mysteriously disappeared, and it was only recently that the manuscript was returned to Mascagni's heirs, who have generously made it available for the edition edited by Ennio Clari. Thus, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mascagni, Alla gioja has been brought back to life. |

Subcollection: ViolinThree composers for three anniversaries: Verdi, Wagner and Mascagni. In the 19th century, paraphrasing, improvisation and arranging were widely practiced and played an important role in the diffusion and cohabitation of two different, dominant musical styles typical of that period: on the one hand lyric opera, and on the other concert virtuosity. In fact, every great virtuoso of the 19th century cultivated the use of improvisation, paraphrasing and so forth, on established themes, which were frequently opera arias or popular motifs and were most frequently written for piano, but occasionally also for other instruments such as violin and piano, as presented here. This practice allowed a more capillary diffusion of opera music beyond the theatre to more reserved groups, such as the salons of high society or private circles of music enthusiasts. All of these four "improvisers" (Ritter, Wilhelmj, Bazzini and Sivori) were outstanding violinists and composers and renown international, concert musicians of their time (Camillo Sivori was Paganini's only pupil; Antonio Bazzini who garnered extraordinary praise from Robert Schumann; Ritter, husband of Wagner's niece Franziska and friend of R. Strauss, was violinist and director; Wilhelmj, child prodigy, was called by Liszt the German Paganini). |

Collection: Opera Collection Subcollection: OpéraEmil Ivanov has long become a famous name among the world tenor elite. He began his career in the Sofia National Opera to join soon after that the cast of the Vienna Staatsoper, on whose bill he is currently present. Vienna, on its part, was his launching board to the greatest opera stages and festivals in Europe and the United States, where he sang many times at the Metropolitan. Emil Ivanov enchants the audience with his sound, voluminous tenor, with his brilliant pitches and beautiful timbre. He is an artist of varied repertoire including mainly parts of 19th century operas by Verdi, Meyerbeer, Massenet, Bizet. Most outstanding among his performances are these from "veristic" works by Puccini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Giordano. For this CD the singer has chosen mainly arias which express in the best manner his musical, vocal and emotional nature.
