Penguin Café Orchestra - A Matter Of Life... Songs written by Arthur Jeffes

Penguin Café Orchestra - A Matter Of Life... Songs written by Arthur Jeffes
ID: DPC101
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Jazz
Subcollection: Orchestre

Penguin Cafe is a continuation by Arthur Jeffes of the ideas and music that his father, Simon Jeffes the English composer and musician, created with the enduring and ever-evolving concept of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

During the last two years they've been touring and playing the original music and adding a few new pieces as they emerged. This record is a collection of some of these pieces.

13 years after Simon Jeffes' death, his son, Arthur, has started playing his music again. Under the name Penguin Cafe, Arthur - along with a new group of musicians - is re-visiting his father's music and starting a new chapter in the story of this unique and strange creative world. Their sound is at once familiar and new, combining acoustic power and a beguiling, feisty charm.
The Penguin Cafe’s first year, 2009, saw them playing the Acoustic stage at Glastonbury, the main stages at Big Chill and Bestival, and selling out the Snape Prom among many other adventures. In 2010 one major highlight was playing at the Albert Hall in their own BBC Late Night Prom.
Over these first two years Arthur has been writing new material to compliment and respond to the old. A love-letter to the original music, ‘A Matter Of Life...’ is the result of this endeavour and is one of the most startling, beautiful and extraordinary records of the year.

Alexander and Ekaterina Kolodochka were born into a musical family in Moscow. At a very young age they began what would become a life of music with their education in the “State Chopin Music School.” Their schooling continued at the “State Gnessin College” in Moscow, where both received their degrees with honours. Ekaterina moved to Germany and Alexander followed her one year later, where brother and sister continued their musical education. Their list of master classes includes professors with such well known names as Gililov, Edelstein, Leuschner, Gottlieb, von Arnim, Pochekin, Valdma, Voskressensky and Kämmerling, as well as Stenzel & Stenzel and Genova & Dimitrov. They participated in and won various national and international competitions, which are part of their impressive curricula vitae. At the “University for Music and Dance” Cologne under Prof. Anthony Spiri they completed their studies and were awarded the “Master of Music” with the highest possible degree (1.0). In 2006 they had their debut at the Philharmonic in Essen, Germany, under their newly formed name “Piano Duo Kolodochka”. Since then they have concentrated on piano-duo concerts, playing four hands on one or two grand pianos. Winning the “Torneo Internazionale di Musica” in Verona in 2008 confirmed their role as an upcoming young piano-duo in this special class. Their evergrowing repertoire consists of a variety of compositions which are played together on one or two grand pianos. The duo has performed to rave reviews at national and international concerts, among them at the Philharmonic in Essen, The “Alte Oper” Frankfurt, Kurhaus Wiesbaden, Radio Station WDR, Cologne, Robert Schumann Concert Hall, Düsseldorf, Rudolfinum Prague, and in Luxembourg. It is fascinating to watch the charming and highly talented brother and sister Alexander & Ekaterina Kolodochka complimenting each other and at amazing speeds. Their symbiotic competence is absolutely convincing.

Andrea Imparato, saxes & flute Leo Ravera, piano Marco Cavanna, contrabbass Daviano Rotella, drums

“Dear Legacy”...a spiritual one...Let’s try to find inside our mind and soul a feeling of gratitude for any gift, relief, even for just a single, precious one. Gratitude for any dear persons who did accompany us. Those people who preceeded us, first of all our parents, any fine “teacher”, and those simple and generous kind of persons... Some periods in our lifetime are right, in particular, for us to find out those gifts, to feel a strong help that already has been and still continues, and we become able to feel an intense gratitude. A natural thankfulness as a sentiment that is a benefit for us. To me, who became a father, a daddy in an advanced age, it is easy and natural,

Now, beeing able to realize, estimate the reliefs, the gifts, evey good teachings, that I couldn’t see clearly in my youth. Helps and sake from my father Luciano, musician, continues to be palpable, evident to me even though he, phisically, is no more with us. When a friend of us, musician Guido Manusardi, encouraged me to work on this musical album, but also in several events of my music and modest humanity, I felt once again that along our way we aren’t alone, on the contrary, if we are able to recognize it, we are walking our way with, at our side, the people, the companions who gave us good sentiments, and to whom we felt and feel love.
