Chopin's famous 24 Préludes Op.28, in each key in the circle of the 5:th, inspired by Bach's Preludes were at the time of publication something that many musicians proved sceptical to. "Préludes to what?" And still, these wonderful short miracles leave much to wonder about. Are they constructed to demonstrate a certain musical style, as with the Etudes focusing on a technical difficulty, or is the intention to use the preludes as a kind of a glossary of introductions to other works? Or maybe they should be performed in order, preceding only each other. Chopin left this great mystery to be figured out by ourselves or is it really possible that there is no pattern but just a set of wonderful small pieces, representing a certain mood or style? Chopin also wrote another longer Prélude, Op.48, and after his death, two more sketches were found published posthumously. |

JANIS IVANOVS is considered Latvia's most distinguished symphonist. His grasp of orchestral colour and musical texture was so extraordinary that his colleagues often praised him for his precise and expressive musical idiom. Just as few in the West had heard of Inessa Galante before the break-up of the Soviet Union, few were aware of this most prominent Latvian composer of the 20th century, Janis Ivanovs. Like Prokofiev and Shostakovich, Ivanovs survived conflicts with the Stalinist authorities, was even sometimes in official favour, but unlike Russian composers of that era he was a citizen of an occupied territory and the chances of his greatness being recognised outside his native Latvia were seriously compromised. He was also, to a large extent, cut off from outside developments in music, although his early symphonies and tone poems show him very attentive to musical trends. Apart from a short experimental period, he remained a very melodic composer, with roots in romanticism, developing his own voice in the isolation of his occupied homeland. Now Latvia has regained its independence it is proud to reveal his talents to the world. |

This is the first disc recorded by the Galeazzi Ensemble and is a perfect example of a CD that presents the familiar and the unfamiliar. The works recorded are all flute quartets - an incredibly popular medium of the time - and the group have chosen a selection which spans the last 30 years of the 18th century, beginning with Haydn, and working through those composers who would have been his friends and associates.
There is some mystery surrounding one of the works on the disc - the prelude supposedly by Mozart to team with the arrangement of the elder Bach's Fugue in D minor. Rather like some of the movements from the later Requiem, the work has all the characteristics of Mozart, but there seems to be a little doubt over its authenticity.
All the composers featured on this discs were incredibly prolific in their composing, whilst juggling several other balls. J.C.Bach, the "London Bach", was music master to the Royal Family, his role there encompassing conducting, composing, concert management, and accompanying the family at the keyboard. Hoffmeister ran a publishing house, producing works by the likes of Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart, and Pleyel's career is even more astounding since he was something of an entrepreneur, opening a music shop, a publishing house and a piano factory. Despite their extra-curricular activities, these are fine works, and are well placed with works by their more well-known contemporaries and friends, Haydn and Mozart. |
