It celebrates the Christmas story through an imaginative selection and juxtaposition of poetry and liturgical texts, and provides a multifaceted telling of the familiar narrative. The celebratory aspects of Christmas are tainted by darker themes that are inherent to the story but are easily overlooked, culminating in an enlightened and engaging work that explores the Christmas story in a profound manner.
The Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford is among the finest and most active university choirs in the UK. Its wide-ranging repertory includes a rich array of Renaissance and Baroque music and contemporary works.

The trumpet in actual practice: sooner serves the goal rather than art. That may explain why the major Romantic composers ignored the trumpet as a solo-instrument in the 19th century, although the technical possibilities of the instrument had increased enormously due to the invention of the valves. In the orchestra literature, the trumpet was always given the role of signal-horn; the versatile musical possibilities remained unutilised for a long time.
The collection of composers on this CD nevertheless wrote beautiful music, which gave the trumpet the opportunity to demonstrate itself in the role of sensory and subtle soloinstrument. The trumpet concertos of Beethoven, Mendelssohn or Strauss that were never composed are somewhat compensated with this pieces of music by less known composers. |

The CD collects some of the most important pieces for guitar of the 20th century performed by Stefano Grondona, who plays three legendary guitars (one of which belonged to Julian Bream himself) made by Jose Romanillos, who has also turned 80. All the compositions have been important milestones in Stefano Grondona’s career and he shows this in his astonishing interpretations. This album contains one of the best versions of Benjamin Britten’s 'Nocturnal' ever recorded. Benjamin Britten was born 100 years ago and 'Nocturnal after John Dowland' was written 50 years ago: this CD is a perpetual celebration. |
