Podkolekce: Orchestr This compact disc features the premiere recordings of the most important works for orchestra by Max d’Ollone: «Le Ménétrier» (the village fiddler), Lamento and the Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra Like his teacher Jules Massenet, d’Ollone was particularly fascinated by the human voice, and for this reason he is primarily remembered as a composer of operas, sacred and secular cantatas and countless songs.
Although Max d’Ollone wrote relatively little orchestral music and although this repertoire was written in a limited period of time (almost exclusively before 1914), his symphonic music is characterized by a very high artistic and compositional quality. His orchestral music is richly lyrical, emotionally expressive and technically impeccable.
The three-movement structure of «Le Ménétrier» with a solo violin part is very reminiscent of a concerto, a purely instrumental form, but d’Ollone described it as a «symphonic poem in three parts with a solo violin». Lamento is a meticulously orchestrated work. One is carried away by the beauty of its melodic lines and their emotional force. The delicate harmonies, at times unexpected and yet always elegant and smooth, contribute to the sense of movement toward a profound serenity. The Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra is forceful and majestic, at times reminiscent of Saint-Saëns. The monumental, grandiloquent finale masterfully accentuates the emotional power of this composition. This recording is rounded off by a chamber music work, the Andante and Scherzo for Three Cellos a short composition that offers clear demonstration of the evolution of the composer’s musical language.

Kolekce: Orchestral WorksPodkolekce: Orchestr The adventure started over ten years ago. With one recording a year, we are now, in 2009, up to the 12th volume of the Basque music collection, begun by Marguerite Dütschler-Huber, the founder of Claves Records, which the new management is very keen to pursue. This last opus is dedicated to the composer, pianist and teacher Beltrán Pagola (1878-1950), who was, notably, professor at the San Sebastián Conservatory of two other musicians whom this collection has already honoured: José María Usandizaga (CD 50-9814) and Francisco Escudero (CD 50-2110/11). Pagola left an indelible mark on the Basque institution, where he spent almost half a century. He gave it a Symphony Orchestra and wrote a Traité pratique d’harmonie (Practical Harmony Treatise), which is still a reference today. In this album, the National Basque Orchestra, conducted by Rubén Gimeno, proposes a range of works spanning about thirty years of creative activity. From the 1918 Allegro Appassionato orchestrated by Escudero (who took over his composition class in 1848) to the surprising 1947 iDonosti!, caprice humoristique, we discover music that is both true to its period and irresistibly attached to the Basque tradition. |

Kolekce: Orchestral WorksPodkolekce: Orchestr Glazunov’s ballet music continued the tradition of Tchaikovsky’s “symphonic ballets”. The Seasons was ordered by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the director of the Imperial Theatres, and completed in 1900 to be choreographed by Marius Petipa at the St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Theatre. Conceived as an allegory of Nature with its eternal cycle of youth, growing and ageing, the ballet did not see a proper stage production when the composer was around, but its music enjoyed popularity very quickly.
The suite Chopiniana, an orchestration of diverse pieces by Chopin, was composed in 1892. Sharing the love of many Russian composers for Chopin’s music, Glazunov displayed a magnificent sense of style and orchestral skills. The piano pieces did not become any heavier but got a new sound in a new facet. The Ballet master Michel Fokine made use of the suite fifteen years later when he created his famous ballet performance. Glazunov’s works were recorded by the celebrated Soviet symphony orchestras led by the prominent conductors of the 20th century Boris Khaikin and Evgeny Svetlanov.
