Cello Classics explores the world of ensemble works for 4 Cellos, featuring little known gems by some of those best qualified to write for the instrument - the great Cellist-Composers of the 19th Century. Offenbach was a virtuoso himself, and his Adagio and Scherzo have only recently come to light. Grützmacher, Klengel and Fitzenhagen taught at the major conservatories in Europe and have left a wealth of literature for this wonderfully sonorous line-up - a string quartet with four cellos. Performed by Cello Classics' founder, Sebastian Comberti with his cello section from the London Mozart players, Julia Desbruslais, Ben Chappell and Sarah Butcher. Contains extensive notes by Andrew Stewart.

Fitzenhagen: Konzertwalzer / Ave Maria Op. 41 / Die Spinnerin, Op. 59 No. 2
Goltermann: Deux Morceaux de Salon, Op. 53
Grützmacher: Consecration Hymn, Op. 65
Klengel: Four Pieces, Op. 33 / Two Pieces, Op. 5
Offenbach: Adagio / Scherzo
Paque: Souvenir de Curis

Throughout this time Friedrich von Flotow was giving piano lessons as well as performing as a pianist in the Paris salons. In 1838 he met a seven year younger penniless cellist of exceptional talent named Jacob Eberscht, a jewish cantor's son from Cologne, which although admitted to the Paris Conservatorie, could not continue his studies due to the lack of funds. Flotow promised that he would secure Eberscht access to the salons and offered him to collaborate with him. Intruduced in this way, Eberscht became well-known, and soon - now under the name of Jacques Offenbach - he gained great fame.

This is fun! Miloslav Koenneman was a composer and military musician who came to Baden-Baden around 1850. He composed this very charming piece of music -a little like Hans Christian Lumbye. It is performed outdoors every year in Baden-Baden and the audience is meant to sing along in the hymn in the end of the piece -like Pomp and Circumstance. Even Mark Twain loved it -arriving tired in Baden-Baden around the time when Koenneman was there and the author writes that the piece "delighted me, warmed me, moved me, stirred me, uplifted me, enraptured me." So this is a must -also for the tender and melancholy Gounod piece in the end of the CD. You will love this one.
