Francis Poulenc was a tantalising character, part-monk and part-rascal according to the critic Claude Rostand. As in Stabat mater his music reflects this Janus-like persona, tears never far beneath the surface of even his most jovial offerings. Early on he had renounced the devout Catholicism of his family but rediscovered his faith after the premature death of a close friend, the composer and patron Pierre-Octave Ferroud. It was this event that prompted Poulenc's pilgrimage to the Black Madonna of Rocamadour, who nestles benevolently, high up in the rock face.
An important body of sacred works ensued, not least his Stabat mater, a personal memorial to Ferroud. This is performed here by the combined Cambridge choirs of St John's, Clare and Gonville, and Caius; they're pleasingly mellifluous and disciplined but sound utterly un-French. The work can take it, but this is not the most tender performance. The strange and haunting Motets (Claire and Gonville and Caius Choirs) are dramatically the high point of this concert, while the otherworldly beauty of the ethereal (female-voice) Litanies tugs at the heart-strings. As a visual experience, we get two different locations but there's not a great deal you can do with a bunch of singers. The best things are the close-ups of a fabulous Chagall window (which comes from another church entirely, but who cares?). |

Collection: Russian Piano School Subcollection: Piano Nikolai Petrov (1943 - 2011) an outstanding musician, one of the world’s most known representatives of the modern Russian piano school, deservedly takes his place among the most remarkable musicians of our times.
From the earliest days of his concert activity, critics noted a really powerful talent of the musician, who is equally able to convey lyrical revelations and mighty emotional flights; the “monumental virtuosity” of his piano playing; easy and free sound production, and immaculate taste. Petrov has been applauded by the audiences of the most prestigious concert venues, such as Carnegie Hall and Albert Hall, Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center, Concertgebouw, Colon Theater and many others.

Subcollection: Voices „Dresden Chamber Choir “ (directed by Hans-Christoph Rademann)
The CD Weihnachten („Christmas“) by the „Dresden Chamber Choir “ (directed by Hans-Christoph Rademann) was introduced to the German market in 2002. It was very successful- after few weeks the CD was sold out and had to be re-released soon after. Hans- Christoph Rademann and the „Dresden Chamber Choir “ have chosen wonderful pieces around Christmas - very popular songs, unknown titles and a few contemporary pieces. The program tells us the Christmas story in musical kind - beginning at the Announcement to Maria until the Worship of the shepherds. The CD shows a wide ranging mix from early sacred music (Heinrich Schütz: Tröstet mein Volk) until romantic choral pieces of well-known Christmas songs (Max Reger: “Macht hoch die Tür”) - as well as some new compositions by Arvo Pärt, Karsten Gundermann and Jan Sandström. The Dresden singers keep always the balance between wide dynamic contrasts and sure intonation. In the last few years the Dresden Chamber Choir has received several international prizes. At the 5th International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktobersdorf in 1997, the choir was awarded the first prize and was officially judged to be “internationally outstanding”. The recordings have been made at St. Lucas church in Dresden in 2002 |

Collection: Choral Collection Subcollection: Choral and Organ Francis Poulenc is now considered to be among the most important composers of choral music of the 20th Century. Yet his early career reveals no trace of the dazzling and idiosyncratic unaccompanied choral textures so abundantly produced in the second half of his life.
This new collection of Poulenc's choral works is centered on his masterwork, the Figure Humaine. Even though it is only 20 minutes in length, the work is a supreme test of stamina, technical agility, range, aural skill and musicianship. The professional chamber choir Tenebrae (directed by former King's Singer Nigel Short) are more than capable of tackling this repertoire, and this disc promises to provide a new benchmark in interpretations of the work. |

Subcollection: Orchestra The conclusion to a three part-series of Igor Stravinsky‘s ballets from Sergei Diaghilev,s Ballet Russes, performed by BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Thierry Fischer. These recordings capture the excitement and vibrancy of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in live performance at their home of BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales.
Almost no musical work has had such a powerful influence or evoked as much controversy as Stravinsky's ballet score The Rite of Spring. The work's premiere on May 29, 1913, at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, was scandalous. In addition to the outrageous costumes, unusual choreography and bizarre story of pagan sacrifice, Stravinsky's musical innovations tested the patience of the audience to the fullest.
This disc also features Francis Poulenc‘s ballet Les Biches, premiered at the Ballet Russes in 1924. Originally commissioned by Diaghilev to write a piece based on Glazunov‘s Les Sylphides, Poulenc instead chose to base his piece on the paintings of Watteau that depicted Louis XV and various women in his "Parc aux biches" |

Collection: Choral Collection Subcollection: Choral and Organ Eton College Chapel Choir perform an enchanting selection of 20th Century French Choral and Organ music. As well as music by composers who were at the heart of French musical life in Paris, such as Olivier Messiaen and Francis Poulenc, this disc features works by lesser-known composers such as Déodat de Severac and Pierre Villette. The choir’s history can be charted back to the founding of Eton in 1441 by Henry VI. The present day choir is comprised of Eton students (with the occasional master), about half of whom have been choristers at cathedrals or chapels before they come to Eton for their secondary education. |
