In Khachaturian’s first masterpiece, the outstahding Piano Concerto in D flat major, composed in 1936, his own personal style is organically intertwined with the groundwork of the genre’s history. A priority for the composer was the romantic model of the piano concerto. The key, the sound image and the textural aspect of the concerto’s initial theme are close to the theme of the introduction of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, whereas the general principles of the dialogue between the piano and the orchestra are similar to Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos. That for Khachaturian the main sense for utilizing sonata form is, first of all, in establishing the contrast between the themes-images, we are convinced by the first movement of the Concerto Allegro ma non troppo e maestoso, in D flat major. The monumental romantic main theme, endowed with a flavor of Eastern exoticism, is stated in the first movement three times: at the beginning of the exposition, at the beginning of the recapitulation and after a spacious cadenza, in the place of the coda. Its middle section presents itself as a concentration of piano virtuosity.

Melodiya presents an album of Grigory Ginsburg, a wonderful virtuoso pianist and one of the glorious representatives of the Russian piano school of the 20th century.

Ginsburg’s name is now overshadowed by his some of his better known peers such as Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Yakov Flier, Stanislav Neuhaus and others. Meanwhile, in his time in the 1930s-1950s, his concert performances entranced audiences and critics alike.

This album comprises compositions by Franz Liszt and Anton Rubenstein’s Piano Concerto No. 4. Ginsburg’s interpretation of the concerto became a model for musicians of many generations.

Emil Gilels Plays Bach - Vol. 2 - First Time on CD

Emil Gilels Plays Bach - Vol. 2 - First Time on CD
ID: MELCD1002224
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Baroque
Subcollection: Piano and Orchestra

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of J S Bach’s works performed by Emil Gilels.

This disc continues the series of recordings made by the great pianist. However, these recordings suggest a different view on Gilels’ performing art.

Emil Gilels entered the music life of the USSR as a virtuoso in the best, romantic sense of the word. His inspired artistry always produced a magnetic effect on the audience. He conquered the world with his performances of Beethoven’s sonatas, Mozart’s works in Salzburg, and interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s and Rachmaninov’s concertos. It was difficult to assume that a well-established stereotype of romantic pianism hid an inspired and profound interpreter of Bach’s music.

Johann Sebastian Bach was never at the centre of Gilels’ repertoire. They were more like individual pieces, but that was exactly what made them so unexpected at his concerts. Nevertheless, he kept revisiting some of them time and again.

This disc features recordings made in 1948 to 1968. Not claiming to be authentic and at the same time not falling into excessive romanticism, Emil Gilels shapes his own unique vision of the great cantor’s music world.
