Claudio Monteverdi - Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, 1960 - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

Claudio Monteverdi - Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, 1960 - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
ID: SIGCD237
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Collection:
Sacred Music
Subcollection: Choir

This disc represents a new orchestra partnership for Signum Records with The Orchestra of the Age of the Englightenment, one of London and the world’s leading period-instrument ensembles. Led by Robert Howarth, the recording was made at Kings Place following the orchestras successful 2010 tour of the work.

On the Vespers, Robert Howarth writes: "For me, Monteverdi’s music enhances the text beautifully. It doesn’t matter whether one is religious or not, this music touches the human soul and reflects, sincerely and passionately the true meaning of the texts in the psalms and motets … You don’t need to know what’s being sung to hear that this is a masterpiece. However, it was Monteverdi’s intention to show you his thoughts on the texts and I think it is that intention that drives this music."

Beethoven - Symphony No.9, Choral

Beethoven - Symphony No.9, Choral
ID: SIGCD254
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

Beethoven’s euphoric Symphony No.9, like his symphony No.5, is one of those pieces of classical music which transcends the barrier between musical genres - one of the few pieces of the classical canon in the popular consciousness. Few can fail to be uplifted and caught up in the joyous Ode to Joy finale. For this performance, recorded live at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1994, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment were joined by the renowned conductor and long-time collaborator, Sir Charles Mackerras, a partnership between him and the OAE that lasted almost a quarter of a century.

This is Signum’s second release with the OAE, following a release of Monteverdi’s Vespers (SIGCD237) earlier this year. The next release, planned for December, will feature Sarah Connolly performing Mahler’s Totenfier and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with the OAE under Vladimir Jurowski.

A. Vivaldi - The Four Seasons - Kati Debretzeni, violin, conductor - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

A. Vivaldi - The Four Seasons - Kati Debretzeni, violin, conductor - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
ID: SIGCD377
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Violin

With its vivid poetry and technical ingenuity, Vivaldi’s 'Four Seasons' was ground-breaking at the time of its composition and to this day remains as influential and transfixing as ever. In this recording, violinist Kati Debretzeni directs the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment based on the energetic, historically-informed performances given last February when, with renowned choreographer Henri Oguike, the OAE fused authentic performance with contemporary choreography.
The booklet includes a ‘Guided tour of the Four Seasons’, allowing listeners to follow the poetry that inspired Vivaldi as they hear the performances on the disc, including additional composer’s notes from Vivaldi’s own scores. Born in Transylvania, Kati Debretzeni studied with Ora Shiran and Baroque violin with Catherine Mackintosh and Walter Reiter at the Royal College of Music in London. Since the year 2000 she has led the English Baroque Soloists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and since 2008 is one of the leaders of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, which she has directed and lead in the UK, Europe and the US. Kati features as soloist on two versions of Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, with the European Brandenburg Ensemble under Trevor Pinnock (Gramophone Award, 2008), and again with the English Baroque Soloists. She has directed from the violin various ensembles in Israel, Poland, Norway, Iceland and the UK, and teaches the Baroque and Classical violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague.
