Collection: Chamber Music Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen's Music, is without doubt one of the most important composers of the current age. This new disc presnets the first new recording of his major work Ave Maris Stella since Max's own Fires of London recording over 30 years ago, and the premiere recordings of three fine and varied works

Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Voices and Chamber Ensemble David Lumsdaine's work is mostly rooted in Australia where he was born though he now lives in the UK. This unique and intriguing set includes pieces for a variety of instruments (not all are vocal) a number of which relate to the Australian landscape and the sounds of its unique wildlife - which are also captured in live 'outback' recordings demonstrating the voices of the birds and creatures which inspired some of the works.
The music itself is most approachable and well written. Definitely an important addition to the modern music repertoire. |

Collection: Chamber Music Gerhard's music is inspired by his Catalan roots, and from his exile from 1938) in England. He died just as his true worth as a composer of music in many genres was becoming appreciated. Always wanting to push back the barriers of the musical imagination, his music is seen by some as "hard work" but is in fact very melodic and accessible - invariably worth the effort.

Subcollection: Quartet The Lindsay Quartet, Gemini, Joanna Porter, Geoffrey Poole, Jinny Shaw and Anne-Marie Hastings
Beautifully evocative music by Geoffrey Poole: a two-piano work played by the composer with Joanna Porter, a piece for oboe and piano, presented by Jinny Shaw (oboe) and Anne-Marie Hastings (piano); Septembral itself, a major and intricate chamber work, played by Gemini, and the wonderful yet little-known Third String Quartet, played by the UK's most famouse quartet, the Lindsays.

Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Voices and Chamber Ensemble Aria for Edward John Eyre uses a siren-like solo soprano, narrators and ensemble to recreate the tale of the explorer's epic journey across Australia; the contrasting What Shall I Sing? is a delightful collection of nonsense rhymes. |
