Tolstoy’s creative works were always the subject of excitement for Prokofiev. Having dismissed the idea of composing music on the subject of the novel “Resurrection” he became enthusiastic about “War and Peace”. Eleven of thirteen scenes were written within the year. Putting aside plenty (according to his opinion) of minor details the composer concentrated his attention on two main subject lines - lyrical and psychological connected with Natasha’s image and the patriotic one devoted to the ordeal of the Russian people in the Patriotic war of 1812. The conductor Samuel Samosud played rather important role in the destiny of the opera. He was a prominent person in the operatic art of the Soviet period. The opera survived re-birthing due to his support: first on the stage of the Bolshoi Hall of Moscow Conservatoire in 1945, then with Mali Opera Theatre Company in Leningrad. Being the last work of Prokofiev in the opera genre “War and Peace” combines the best features of the composer’s music talent. It took Borodin nineteen years to compose this opera based on the old Russian epic poem The Tale of Igor’s Campaign and also incorporating material from other sources. Eternally busy, the author combined composing with a chair in chemistry and active social life and never finished the work.

Prince Igor reached us thanks to the effort of the composer’s friends Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov who managed to complete Borodin’s masterpiece.

Opera in three acts - Libretto by Luigi Illica, Giuseppe Giacosa

One of the most popular operas of the world repertoire, Tosca was finished in the last year of the 19th century. It was based on the French playwright Victorien Sardou’s drama written for Sarah Bernhardt. The premiere of the opera that took place in 1900 in Rome was not accepted with much enthusiasm, and only the performance at La Scala under Arturo Toscanini became a true triumph. The story of singer Floria Tosca and her beloved painter Mario Cavaradossi who fell victim to bloody despot Baron Scarpia on the background of the revolutionary events in Italy of the early 19th century is still able to move to the innermost of one’s heart as the heat of dramatic fervour is masterfully captured in the music. Numerous audio and video recordings of the opera featuring the world’s best singers and conductors were made in the previous century.
This recording was realized by the USSR Bolshoi Theatre in 1974. The celebrated internationally recognized soloists of the opera company of the 1970s Tamara Milashkina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yuri Mazurok and others perform the opera in the original language under the prominent conductor Mark Ermler.

Zurab Anjaparidze - Arias and Scenes from Operas

Zurab Anjaparidze - Arias and Scenes from Operas

Type: CD

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of the prominent singer and soloist of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre Zurab Anjaparidze.

“For eleven years of his career on the stage of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre he was … the best Herman, the best Radames, the best José. Whatever the singer undertook, he created, and id it in a thorough, unhurriedly, with a sense of enormous responsibility and his own artistic dignity.” This is how the outstanding Irina Arkhipova described the performing art of Zurab Anjaparidze who was one her perennial partners at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Thousands of spectators and listeners could not help but agree to her appraisal. Anjaparidze’s voice preserved on tape still resonates with the beauty of its sound, wealth of its timbre with an inimitable Italian flavour, emotional fullness of every character he went through. Zurab Anjaparidze debuted at the Bolshoi as José in Bizet’s Carmen in 1957. Along with the part of Radames in Verdi’s Aida, that role became Anjaparidze’s trademark, and soon the singer took the place of the leading heroic tenor of the opera company.

The role of Herman in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades was the artist’s highest accomplishment at the Bolshoi. He also sang Herman on the Bolshoi’s tour at La Scala in 1964. After that making the Italian press dubbed him the “Soviet Franco Corelli.” The album includes fragments from the operas performed by Zurab Anjaparidze - The Queen of Spades, Carmen, Aida, as well as Verdi’s Il Trovatore and Otello, Puccini’s Tosca and Manon Lescaut, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. The recordings were made in the 1960s and 1970s with the orchestra of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre conducted by Alexander Melik-Pashayev, Boris Khaikin and Mark Ermler.
