Subcollection: Folk MusicNorth Bulgaria has a fascinating folk music, which has been influenced by the neighbouring folk regions and the local culture. Pure folk elements from neighbouring regions often "cross" the provisory boundaries and create curious interrelations with the local traditional culture. The recordings of accordionist Yanko Zhelyazkov included in this release serve as an eloquent illustration of these interrelations. Born in 1945, he comes from the village of Brest, Pleven District, situated by the Danube River. His interest for the accordion was inherited from his father and his uncle, who were both famous accordionists. The greater part of his professional experience (of over 40 years) is connected with the Severnyashki (Northern) Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances - Pleven. Along with his work in the ensemble, he dedicates a great part of his time and efforts to working with amateur choirs and orchestras. This helps him enrich his own repertoire with interesting songs and instrumental melodies from his native region. The release includes his most remarkable recordings of horo dances and rachenitsa, characteristic of North Bulgaria. |

Subcollection: Folk MusicThis is the first programme of the series MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA that Gega New begins to release. It will feature all instruments used in Bulgarian folk practice (authentic as well as the so-called 'modern' ones). The present release presents the tambura. The instrument was carried to Bulgaria in the 7th century. It still exists in Asia (Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, etc.) under various names and was widely-known on the Balkans by the name "bulgaria" ("bugaria"). The tambura was used in almost all parts of Bulgaria up to the end of the 20th century. Today it is characteristic mainly of the Pirin folk region, though it takes significant part in the ensembles and instrumental groups as an accompanying folk instrument, especially during the second part of the 20th century, when the characteristic tambura performing style was formed.
The musician who proved that the tambura is of equal worth with the other folk instruments is Rumen Sirakov. Being the son of the famous folk singer Pavel Sirakov, it was natural that Rumen should begin to play folk music: first he started playing the whistle, then the trumpet and the clarinet. Simultaneously, he graduated from the school of classical guitar and this provoked his interest to the tambura, making him the best performer of this instrument. At 17 he began playing in the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Songs Ensemble. Then, together with the prominent kaval-player Stoyan Velichkov and the gadulka-player Mihail Marinov, founded the Trakiiska Troika. He has made a number of recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio, given concerts throughout Bulgaria, in England, the USA, Australia, etc. He also worked with Trio Bulgarka, Cate Bush, and had personal artistic contacts with George Harrison and Eric Clapton, the world-known guitarist. Rumen Sirakov's art has been highly appreciated at prestigious international forums. His teaching career is also of great significance and his students are among the best tambura-players. Recently, he marked the 40th anniversary of his creative activity. His contribution as a performer and founder of the Bulgarian school of tambura performance is undeniable. For this reason Gega New begins the musical instruments series with such a renowned and original musician.

The 1950s marked the beginning of a renewal of Bulgarian folk art. Many national and local folk art festivals were founded at that time. Radio Sofia and the regional radio stations tried to attract talented singers and musicians for their programmes. For many of those people of different professions folk music became a destiny. One of the newly found talents of that time was the Dobroudja singer Dobra Savova. She was born in the village of Koriten, Dobroudja region and inherited the singing talent of her family. Her gift was appreciated well beyond the boundaries of her village when she was noticed by music specialists at a folk art festival. This set the beginning of her professional career and today we always connect the Dobroudja region with her songs. These are songs of her family and her village. People started listening to them on Radio Varna, at concerts, on the programmes of Radio Sofia. She has made numerous recordings, which will pass on to future generations her unique singing talent and authentic Dobroudja vocal style. The present programme presents a part of them. It begins with the song "Esen se zaesenyava", which has brought her popularity and the never-fading love of her listeners. |

Subcollection: Folk MusicPetko Radev, clarinet, has a special place in Bulgarian music culture. On the one hand, he is one of the most renowned classical music performers. He played in the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, in Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Milan Scala orchestra. His solo repertoire is impressive. Gega New has released recordings of his performances together with pianist Maria Prinz (GD 226). Petko Radev is a professor in the Sofia Academy of Music.
Together with that, he is a legend in Bulgarian folk music. Being a brilliant performer, he skillfully combines his virtuosic technique with magnificent improvisations on samples of Bulgarian folk music. He founded a folk music orchestra and participated in the recordings of many folk singers: Staika Gyokova, Nedialka Keranova, Yovcho Karaivanov, Gruycho Dochev, etc. For a period of nearly 20 years, performing partners of Petko Radev are among the best instrumentalists in Bulgaria: Petko Dachev, Kosta Kolev, Emil Kolev, Ivan Kirev, Yordan Yotov, Ivan Hadjiiski. Recordings of that period have long been perceived as classics in Bulgarian folk music and the next generation of performers (some of them his pupils in the Academy of Music) feel respect and regard for the musician who created a new style in the folk genre.
The album Petko Radev & Friends features the closest partners of the musician. It continues the release Petko Radev and Petko Dachev (GD 230). The two CDs are evidence of his talent and skill, of his ability to unite and develop the achievements of his older colleagues. Petko Radev’s unique style still continues to bring joy to the admirers of Bulgarian folk music.
