Nikolai Kaufmann is not only among the most adept Bulgarian musical scholars, a folklorist who has dedicated his life to the preservation, classification, tracing down and popularising the enormous national legacy, but also a composer who has created hundreds of songs - choral, solo, folk-song arrangements, as well as chamber-instrumental works. The CD presents Kaufmann's multi-faced talent with a varied selection of his works. Together with the Three dances (for piano) from "Anthology of Bulgarian Rhythms" and the Dilmano, Dilbero Variations for Piano, one can also hear two pieces for flute and piano, all of them based on Bulgarian metres and rhythms. CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 1 - IVAN Spassov-PRAYER CHANTS

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 1 - IVAN Spassov-PRAYER CHANTS
ID: GD251
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

Ivan Spassov (1934-1996) belongs to the generation of Bulgarian composers who developed their abilities and won recognition during the 1970s and the 1980s. His work has invariably roused interest although it was not always accepted unanimously, and sometimes was even met with complete negation. Particularly important are the vocal creations of Spassov in which he imposed his own style and compositional techniques. Most of his choral songs became basic repertoire; much of them are examples of innovation in the genre. The CD includes three of Ivan Spassov's last opuses, where the theme of death dominates. Deeply connected with the Bulgarian tradition, yet at the same time employing the avant-guard tendencies of the 1950s and 1960s, Ivan Spassov combined both trends in his music. One example of Bulgarian passion is Easter Music for Christ's Suffering, Death and Resurrection, rationalizing the drama of Christ from the Orthodox point of view. The typical for the Catholic tradition form Miserere was made (for the first time by a Bulgarian musician) into a splendid composition for choir, orchestra and soloists, bringing the meaning and the comfort of the psalm. The excellent recordings in the CD present the spiritual world of an exceptional musician and intellectual, who contributed for throwing a bridge between the Bulgarian and the West-European cultures.

Soloists: Kalina Zhekova (soprano), Georgi Lazarov (bass-baritone), Stepan Byulbyulian (evangelist), Alexandrina Toromanova (organ), Tiha Genova (soprano), Donka Lozanova (soprano), Valeria Mircheva (mezzo-soprano), Lilia Ilieva (mezzo-soprano)
Female Chamber Choir with the Academy of Music and Dance Arts - Plovdiv, Chamber Orchestra with the Secondary School of Music - Plovdiv, Polyphonia Chamber a Cappella Choir, Orchestral Ensemble
Conductors: Krikor Chetinian, Ivelin Dimitrov, Plamen Parvanov, Bedros Papazian

BULGARIAN CHORAL ART - Vol. 2

BULGARIAN CHORAL ART - Vol. 2
ID: GD270
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

This is the second album of the Bulgarian Choral Art series (Vol. 1 - GD 244). The programme includes works by Bulgarian composers, created as arrangements on the basis of original folk melodies or inspired by the Bulgarian folk music traditions. Ever since their foundation, the choirs in Bulgaria included in their repertoires mainly medleys of Bulgarian folk songs. Since then dates the close connection between choral creativity and performance, and the folk song became one of the main intonational sources. Many of the folk-based songs thus created became emblematic for Bulgarian choral art.

Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

Bulgarian choral art is known the world over. On their tours abroad, Bulgarian choirs are always met with the approval of the audience. The third CD of the series BULGARIAN CHORAL ART features performances of choirs which are laureates of international competitions. These are studio and live recordings made within a period of 30 years, thus presenting a review of choral art development in Bulgaria. The program includes mainly 20th-century songs, composed chiefly by Bulgarian authors. Many of the pieces were written specially for the choir which performs them.
It is impossible to present in one release all choirs which have won awards at prestigious international competitions. This will continue in the next releases of the series, published with the assistance of the Bulgarian Choirs Union.
