In its historical development Bulgaria has undergone many vicissitudes. Great masses of people settled to live on its territory, accepting the traditions of the local people and at the same time influencing their way of life and culture. This resulted in the appearance of specific regions in the country with their own unique, diverse and multi-layered traditions. A region of such specific nature is the northeastern part of the country. Tracing the art of its singers and instrumentalists, we can draw a picture of the musical and folk traditions of the area.
Sonya Kancheva is a renowned singer from Northern Bulgaria and boasts of a beautiful voice and an exceptional repertoire. She has collected and recorded hundreds of songs from her native place which illustrate to a great extent the interaction of local and adopted musical culture.
Since 1951, when she made her first recordings with Radio Sofia, she has recorded over 270 songs, and there are about 500 more in her personal archives. For many years she has been visiting a great number of villages in this region and the songs she collected from there seem to live a new live of their own with her performance. Sonya Kancheva is the first singer from the region of Varna who has revealed to the listeners the fascinating folklore of Northern Bulgaria. She is still a much favoured performer by people of different ages and an example for the younger folk singers. |

North Bulgaria has a fascinating folk music, which has been influenced by the neighbouring folk regions and the local culture. Pure folk elements from neighbouring regions often "cross" the provisory boundaries and create curious interrelations with the local traditional culture. The recordings of accordionist Yanko Zhelyazkov included in this release serve as an eloquent illustration of these interrelations. Born in 1945, he comes from the village of Brest, Pleven District, situated by the Danube River. His interest for the accordion was inherited from his father and his uncle, who were both famous accordionists. The greater part of his professional experience (of over 40 years) is connected with the Severnyashki (Northern) Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances - Pleven. Along with his work in the ensemble, he dedicates a great part of his time and efforts to working with amateur choirs and orchestras. This helps him enrich his own repertoire with interesting songs and instrumental melodies from his native region. The release includes his most remarkable recordings of horo dances and rachenitsa, characteristic of North Bulgaria. |

This is the first programme of the series MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA that Gega New begins to release. It will feature all instruments used in Bulgarian folk practice (authentic as well as the so-called 'modern' ones). The present release presents the tambura. The instrument was carried to Bulgaria in the 7th century. It still exists in Asia (Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, etc.) under various names and was widely-known on the Balkans by the name "bulgaria" ("bugaria"). The tambura was used in almost all parts of Bulgaria up to the end of the 20th century. Today it is characteristic mainly of the Pirin folk region, though it takes significant part in the ensembles and instrumental groups as an accompanying folk instrument, especially during the second part of the 20th century, when the characteristic tambura performing style was formed.
The musician who proved that the tambura is of equal worth with the other folk instruments is Rumen Sirakov. Being the son of the famous folk singer Pavel Sirakov, it was natural that Rumen should begin to play folk music: first he started playing the whistle, then the trumpet and the clarinet. Simultaneously, he graduated from the school of classical guitar and this provoked his interest to the tambura, making him the best performer of this instrument. At 17 he began playing in the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Songs Ensemble. Then, together with the prominent kaval-player Stoyan Velichkov and the gadulka-player Mihail Marinov, founded the Trakiiska Troika. He has made a number of recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio, given concerts throughout Bulgaria, in England, the USA, Australia, etc. He also worked with Trio Bulgarka, Cate Bush, and had personal artistic contacts with George Harrison and Eric Clapton, the world-known guitarist. Rumen Sirakov's art has been highly appreciated at prestigious international forums. His teaching career is also of great significance and his students are among the best tambura-players. Recently, he marked the 40th anniversary of his creative activity. His contribution as a performer and founder of the Bulgarian school of tambura performance is undeniable. For this reason Gega New begins the musical instruments series with such a renowned and original musician.

The name of Kosta Kolev (b. 1921) is emblematic of Bulgarian folk music!
He is brilliant in all three fields he engages in - as an accordionist, composer and conductor. Bulgarian traditional culture wouldn’t have been the same today without his unique arrangements and original works, his brilliant accordion performances and his wide scope of conducting work. Being brought up in a family of folk musicians, he started playing music at a very early age. Besides mastering the accordion, Kosta Kolev also plays almost all wind instruments. This has helped him a lot in his work as a composer.
His concerts as an accordionist throughout Bulgaria are legendary. He worked with all famous performers in the past: Atanaska Todorova, Gyurgya Pindzhurova, Boris Mashalov, Mita Stoycheva and many others. The concerts they gave always turned into real festivities!
In 1949 Kosta Kolev started working at Radio Sofia as a director of a folk orchestra. He wrote down songs in notes, arranged folk songs and tunes, accompanied live performances. In 1954 he took up the leadership of the orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Songs Ensemble and soon it became a leading ensemble in Bulgaria. Kosta Kolev continuously noted down songs, arranged folk music, composed pieces, taught the musicians how to read music, introduced new instruments in the orchestra, made innovations in the gadulka playing…
Many folk artists’ first successful performances are due to his help. All singers and musicians have at least one arranged piece by Kosta Kolev in their repertoire. He is still sought after by the orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio and by many performers and ensembles.
Kosta Kolev has registered and wrote down in notes over 10 000 folk songs and tunes. He has arranged and written more than 6 000 songs and pieces, taken part in over 5 000 concerts in Bulgaria and throughout the world, and captivated the audience in Romania, Germany, France, Egypt, Austria, Italy, Switzerland…
Kosta Kolev is a model of a musician with a classical music education (he graduated the Bulgarian Academy of Music under Prof. Georgi Dimitrov and Prof. Parashkev Hadjiev), who has remained true to his native origin and has brilliantly combined his knowledge and talent with the centuries-old experience of the folk tradition. He is a true inheritor of the best folk traditions!

The Rhodope Mountains has been the birth place of many Bulgarian singers and musicians. The specific songs of the region and the unusual pentatonic, which are not characteristic for other folk regions in the country, as well as the typical kaba (low-tone) gaida make the music of the Rhodopes a unique sound palette. Mladen Koynarov’s songs introduce an additional richness to its colours.
Born in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, in the village of Oryahovets in the Smolyan district, Mladen Koynarov began his artistic career as a soloist in a concert group (1966), and in 1970 he won a position in the “Rhodopa” State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances in Smolyan. To this day he is a soloist with this ensemble.
He has personally uncovered and learned over 350 folk songs of the central Rhodopes, some of which were released on LPs. He has also recorded over 70 songs for Bulgarian National Radio and participated on more than 140 television programs. In 1978 he received the second prize in the Prix de Folklore competition of Radio Bratislava, and he is also the recipient of the Silver Lyre (1995) and Golden Lyre (1998) awards of the Union of Bulgarian Music and Dance Professionals.
The singer passes his experience and skill on to the young people. In 2000 he founded a school for folk singing in Smolayn. His students are laureates of regional and national competitions and festivals.
