Firma Melodiya presents an anniversary set dedicated to Vladimir Spivakov’s 70th birthday.
This outstanding musician is well-known and loved across the world. A violinist, educator, conductor, founder and permanent leader of the chamber orchestra Moscow Virtuosi and the National Symphony Orchestra of Russia, an organizer of the charity trust that supports talented children, a director of international music festivals both in Russia and overseas, a jury member of a number of violin competitions, and the president of the Moscow International House of Music. Maestro Spivakov’s artistic and social activities only broaden through the years - he performs all over the world, renews his violin and conducting repertoire playing with some of the best soloists and conductors.
The 5-CD set features Vladimir Spivakov as both a violinist and conductor on recordings made in 1970s to 1990s. That period of performing activity and creation of the Moscow Virtuosi was a bright phase in the maestro’s career leaving an unforgettable trace in performing arts of this country and the world. The chamber pieces by Schubert, Locatelli, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud, Bartók and Prokofiev, and virtuosic numbers by Paganini, Wieniawski and Saint-Saëns were recorded with remarkable pianists such as Viktoria Postnikova and Boris Bekhterev; one of the CDs is dedicated to Mozart (Symphony No. 28 and the Coronation Mass) while another is dedicated to Rodion Shchedrin (Carmen Suite and also Music for the Town of Köthen written especially for Spivakov).
Spivakov’s earlier unreleased concert recordings at the 4th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970 are of particular interest. The violinist was awarded the second prize and a silver medal at the competition for his performance of Sibelius’s and Tchaikovsky’s violin concertos, and Tchaikovsky’s, Sarasate’s and Shchedrin’s pieces.

Firma Melodiya presents an album dedicated to the anniversaries of two great figures of Russian culture of the 20th century - Sergei Yesenin (1895-1925) and Georgy Sviridov (1915-1998).
“Once … I met a poet I knew, and he spent a long time reading Yesenin for me. That’s when Yesenin’s verses imprinted themselves on my soul. When I got back home, I could not fall
asleep… The music came suddenly. … That was how I wrote my first song to Yesenin’s text which later became a core song in my Poem to the Memory of Sergei Yesenin. The rest of the songs were composed during two weeks, all at once”. The premiere of the Poem to the Memory of Sergei Yesenin took place in 1956, in Moscow and was a new milestone in the composer’s career properly unveiling his original style and subtle feeling for poetry to the public. On the other hand, Sviridov’s Poem where the composer strived to render the poet’s spiritual side and passionate “love for the native land” became an actual rehabilitation of Yesenin’s poetry which had been covertly prohibited for a long time. Soon after completion of the vocal and symphonic Poem,
the composer came up with the cycle My Father Is a Peasant for tenor, baritone and piano where Yesenin’s images of Russian nature and scenes of country life were expressed by means
of chamber vocal lyric music.
Wooden Russia, a small cantata for tenor, men’s choir and orchestra was composed in 1964 and had an epigraph taken from Yesenin’s verses “Russia, my wooden Russia!”. The poet’s four
poems recreate an image of old patriarchal Russia while the last lines of the final movement herald its tragic demise.
Georgy Sviridov’s cantatas set to the poetry of Sergei Yesenin are performed by the Republican Academic Choir led by Alexander Yurlov and such luminaries of domestic conducting art as Yuri Temirkanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The chamber cycle is sung by Alexei Maslennikov, an outstanding interpreter of Sviridov’s music who is accompanied by the author.

Melodiya presents an album of works for bassoon by West European composers performed by Sergei Krasavin.

An Honoured Artist of Russia, professor of the Gnessins Russian Academy of Music and prize-winner of the international competitions in Prague, Budapest and Munich, Sergei Krasavin is a reputable representative of the Russian performing school. After graduation from the Leningrad Conservatory where he studied bassoon under professor Dmitri Yeryomin, he was a soloist of the orchestra of the Leningrad Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet (now the Mariinsky Theatre), then a soloist of the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the country’s best one. In 1992 to 2006, he played in the French National Orchestra. The bassoonist has also regularly performed as a solo and ensemble musician. A virtuosic technique, expressed emotionality, the sound of rare beauty and an innate sense of form and style are virtues that can be used to describe the musician’s artistic gift.

Sergei Krasavin performs concertos for bassoon and orchestra by Antonio Vivaldi (he was the first composer to “discover” the bassoon as a virtuosic concerto instrument), a rare piece of Mozart - the Sonata for bassoon and cello, and the Sonata for bassoon and piano by Camille Saint-Saëns, the great French master’s last work.

Pianist Alexei Nasedkin and cellist Yuri Loyevsky, two of the leading representatives of Soviet performing art, took part in the recording along with Sergei Krasavin. The Ensemble of Soloists of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra is conducted by maestro Yuri Temirkanov.

D. SHOSTAKOVICH - All Symphonies - Symphonies Nos. 1-15 (complete)

D. SHOSTAKOVICH - All Symphonies - Symphonies Nos. 1-15 (complete)

Dmitri Shostakovich’s creations constitute a musical chronicle of the epoch. What we hear in his music is something that continues to alarm minds and souls of millions of people. His fifteen symphonies captured not only the great musician’s evolution - as if the entire 20th century with its great discoveries and perturbations, unprecedented progress and terrifying catastrophes breathes in their scores. These are unique documents of human spirit that will stay with us for good to tell us about their time, to stir heated theoretical and aesthetic disputes, to give us a reason for very different interpretations, and to command our admiration or sharp rejection. Whatever the case may be, they will never find an indifferent listener.
Firma Melodiya is preparing a number of large-scale projects for the Shostakovich anniversary year. We present the first of them - a set of the composer’s symphonies performed by the greatest masters of the Soviet conducting school and brightest interpreters of Shostakovich’s music - Evgeny Mravinsky, Kirill Kondrashin, Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The set also includes recordings made by Konstantin Ivanov, a predecessor of Evgeny Svetlanov as chief conductor of the country’s principal orchestra - the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra; Yuri Temirkanov, a successor of Evgeny Mravinsky, a great representative of the St. Petersburg conducting school; Rudolf Barshai, a founder of the first Soviet chamber orchestra and the one who inspired Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony; and Maxim Shostakovich, the composer’s son who presented the world premiere of the last, Fifteenth Symphony.
The live and studio recordings of Shostakovich’s symphonies were made by Firma Melodiya from 1961 to 1984. The studio recording is peculiar for the fact it was realized shortly after the world premiere in the presence and under supervision of the composer. An unconfirmed legend among the former members of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra has it that the recording was to be erased together with the other ones after Maxim Shostakovich defected from the Soviet Union. However, it survived among the Melodiya phonograms.
The edition comprises a lidded hard box made from lined cardboard, 9 digipacks and a thick hardcover booklet in English and Russian.
