Subkolektion: Choir John Harle, Soprano saxophone
National Youth Choir of Great Britain and Laudibus - Mike Brewer
Allain has developed a unique musical dialect malleable enough to cover the gamut of liturgical purposes represented on this disc. Whether refracted through the facets of spiritual, carol, motet or Mass setting, his is a music that can only be added to the list of languages from which we should all take inspiration.
Saxophonist John Harle joins Scottish soprano Susan Hamilton and Delphian artist Matthew Owens in these bold works, which are at once heartrending and uncompromising. Whether refracted through the varied generic possibilities of spiritual, carol, motet or Mass, Richard Allain has developed a musical dialect malleable enough to cover the gamut of liturgical purposes represented on this disc. With advocates such as these, Allain’s music cannot fail to make a lasting impression.

Kolektion: BaroqueThe massed voices of the 140-strong National Youth Choir revel in the magnificently soaring lines of Schütz’s sacred music, complemented by John Kitchen’s contributions on the powerful Rieger organ of St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh. Revered by his contemporaries as the ‘Orpheus of our time’, Schütz would never have heard his music performed by forces such as these and on such a scale - surely he would have been a strong advocate of this astounding aural experience. Kitchen’s solo contributions contextualise the choral music with organ works by Samuel Scheidt and other contemporaries of Schütz.

Kolektion: Choral CollectionSubkolektion: Choir The massed voices of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain are ideally suited to the choral music of Henryk Mikolaj Górecki, music of a monumental radiance which demands a huge and rich sonority. Alongside the ever-popular Totus Tuus, this resplendent recording also contains two recent works here receiving their premieres on disc - the luminous Lobgesang and the thrillingly massive Salve Sidus Polonorum, for choir, organ, two pianos and percussion.
Górecki (1933-2010) made his reputation as a leader of the Polish avant-garde in the 1950s, with his early works marking ‘the most colourful and vibrant expression of the new Polish wave.’ Inspired by folk and religious influences, and demonstrating a clear affinity with the likes of Szymanowski and Bartók, the emotional power and clarity of his music continues to radiate and inspire. Tracing his choral works from the Psalm settings of 1972 to music written in his final decade, this disc provides a fascinating insight into one of the most unique musical voices of the twentieth century.

Kolektion: Choral CollectionSubkolektion: Choral and Organ Choral settings of Scottish poetry from Robert Burns to Alexander McCall Smith
These collaborations between noted 'Edinburghians' Alexander McCall Smith and Tom Cunningham appear on disc here for the first time, in a programme of Scottish poetry settings by some of today's leading composers. From the ethereal tenderness of Cunningham's Lullaby to the muscular angularity of Ronald Stevenson's Medieval Scottish Triptych, Laudibus responds with affection and athleticism to the expert direction of UK choral doyen, Mike Brewer.
Producer’s note: “It was not so sunny when we recorded Scotland at Night…On 3-5 January whilst Laudibus was in Colinton Parish Church in Edinburgh to record this collection, the boiler gave out! Anyway, I offered as much support to the ever-spirited Mike & his crew as I could from the Minister's office (things are quite plush in Colinton, and thankfully the heating system in the Minister's suite runs off a newer-fangled & more efficient boiler!). You would never know that these lush sounds were recorded in a sub-freezing environment!” Paul Baxter

Brewer and his award-winning chamber choir Laudibus have unearthed some rare and precious gems in this recording of a cappella choral music by one of England’s best-loved composers. Little-known works both early and late nestle alongside repertory staples such as the glorious Mass in G minor, in a programme which displays Vaughan Williams’ indebtedness to both the sacred and secular instincts of his Elizabethan precursors.

Greensleeves

Prayer to the Father of Heaven

Subkolektion: Choir ‘Coming from backgrounds of both English choral music and jazz, I have always been obsessed by musical connections. I love to perform music of one culture with singers of another, to help performers to share an awareness of music in different contexts.
I have had the good fortune to travel around the world every three years with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. In South Africa I became fascinated by the rhythms and sounds of the music of the African continent. Mexico and Cuba opened up new vistas of musical connection for me, from elderly musicians performing the son jarocho in village tavernas in Veracruz to Afro- Caribbean jazz ensembles performing unbelievably complex music which arose out of that mix of cultures.
The pieces of choral music found here are similarly hybrid, because in most cases they combine elements from more than one source …’
The internationally-renowned National Youth Choir is peerless in bringing to life Brewer's transcontinental choral imaginings. Headed up by the first commercial recording of Mike’s Hamba Lulu, the programme journeys us from the Icelandic tundra to the sultry jazz clubs of Latin America. Is your hi-fi ready to go?
