CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN PIANO MUSIC

Type: CD

The CD brings together five Bulgarian composers who represent the generation of the 1980s and 90s of the 20th century. What unites them is their aesthetic taste, their attitude towards reality and their manner of composing, related to techniques and compositional thinking of the end of this century. All of them, with the exception of Georgi Arnaoudov, live and work abroad, but their varied interests always have a common crossing point called Bulgaria, where their works enjoy recognition and popular acclaim. Impressions from Spain, in Alexander Kandov's "Las mariposas nocturnas", from the Caucasus Mountains in Bojidar Spassov's "Wasserfalle", the search of new style in "Klavierstuk I" by Marin Goleminov (son of the great Bulgarian composer Marin Goleminov), "Incarnation dans la lumiere" by Georgi Arnaoudov, and "Preludium II" by Boyan Vodenicharov illustrate the authors as sensitive, original creative artists, looking for the connection between past and present and casting a glance towards the future. Georgi Arnaoudov is a composer who stood out in the generation which entered Bulgarian musical life in the 1980s. His works are marked by originality evident in both the manner of structuring and the characteristic features of sound-combinations, modes and timbres. He is the author of symphonies, concerto opuses, ballets and a number of chamber-instrumental works. What interests him most are the deep roots of Bulgarian folk music, Gregorian religious art, as well as the ancient Asian cultures. For his CD he has selected some of his most popular compositions, which have been included in the repertoire of recording companies and a number of Bulgarian instrumentalists. Titles like "The Circle of Rites", "Ritual" suggest the author's ambition to give new musical meaning to ancient messages, carried on throughout the centuries. Each of the compositions begins in a peculiar way, from one tone only; then it becomes a thread, which - being drawn out, twisted and re-twisted - turns the initial "silence" and inaction into an exciting musical flow and ends into the "silence" from the beginning again.

The famous Bulgarian scholar and explorer of the culture of old Thrace, Prof. Alexander Fol, and the composer Georgi Arnaoudov, who has already released a CD for Gega New (GD 187, have tried to make past and present meet. Prof. Fol, an investigator of Thracian Orphism and an expert on Orphic hymns and rites, introduced Arnaoudov into the world of Thracian Orphism and gave the ideas for the emotional content of the twelve hymns-prayers in the CD. The composer has revealed his feeling and his ideas of musical recreation of different hymns. In some of the pieces the human voice is leading, in others, the "action" is done by the instruments, but everywhere the energy of the timbres, of the different volumes and pitches of sound, and its resources to create pictures and exert emotional influence are used. In the very beginning Prof. Fol stresses that "music is the universal cosmic language. The cosmos is rhythm and sound!" Led by this maxim Georgi Arnaudov has created original music in the literary context of Alexander Fol. It possesses a brightly individual character and a typical rhythmic and melodic structure, which carries the spirit of a distant and at the same time, comprehensible age. An age when the striving to be initiated and to perfect oneself spiritually while climbing the steps towards True Knowledge, is combined with purifying wisdom, with searching for interrelations with the Cosmos and the Divine.
This CD is a unique phenomenon and a successful attempt to penetrate into an abstract matter that has always been attracting the people of the Spirit, created more than three thousand years ago by some of the inhabitants of Thrace.

Soloists: Tania Kazandjieva (soprano), Milen Ivanov (tenor), Marko Chobanov (tenor), Dimitar Darlev (bass), Mila Pavlova (aulos), Jassen Enchev (aulos), Maria Tuturilova (harp, lyra, psalterion), Snejina Hristova (percussions), Stojan Pavlov (tympanon, percussions)

Gega New Music Company gives a special place in its catalogue to the works of Bulgarian composers. The most famous of them present on the Gega New label are: Pancho Vladigerov, Marin Goleminov, Simeon Pironkov, Dimitar Tapkoff, Lazar Nikolov, etc. Many of them create their works especially for some of Bulgaria's leading musicians. One of the artists preferred by many composers is the cello player Anatoli Krastev, who has an active concert-giving carrier and has been soloist of all Bulgarian and a number of European and American leading orchestras. He has made a great number of recordings in Bulgaria and abroad, and is also member of the jury of prestigious international festivals. Currently, he is Professor at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia and has directed master classes in the UK, France, Belgium, Greece, Brazil, etc. The release 20th Century Bulgarian Music for Cello Solo includes a part of the great number of works for cello solo written by Bulgarian composers of different generations. CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

Recorded in Bulgaria Concert Hall, Sofia, February 2004

Editing: Pavel Boliarski (Acoustic Version Studio)

Voland Quartet presents a very interesting program. The works included were created during the last 70 years and they show some trends in the development of 20th and 21st century music. Of special interest is the combination of two pianos with the timbre variety of the different percussion instruments. The four musicians are renowned solo performers, but in the present recordings they have achieved an amazing ensemble performance.
Ivo Varbanov was born in Bulgaria and received his music education in Italy and the UK, having studied with famous piano teachers. He has performed in important venues such as Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, S. John’s Smiths Square in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and Bulgaria Concert Hall in Sofia. Gega New has published two CDs of the musician: the first one containing works for piano by Mussorgsky (GD 117) and the second - works for cello and piano by Pizzetti, recorded together with the cello player Seeli Toivio (GD 275).
Michal Drewnowski studied the piano with Ewa Poblocka in Warsaw and later on with his father, the well known Polish pianist Marek Drewnowski. He has played extensively as a soloist and chamber musician in most of the European countries in important festivals and venues. He has particular affinity to19th and 20th century music, which is evident in his performance in this program.
Christo Yotzov graduated at the State Academy of Music in Sofia with Dobri Paliev. In 1985, he founded Acoustic Version with Antony Donchev and since then has won many prestigious awards at European jazz festivals. He has performed all over the world with Acoustic Version and also with other artists such as Tommy Smith, Andy Scofield, Milcho Leviev, Alexia, Reiner Winterschlagen, Yildiz Ibrahimova, and Adam Pierontchik. He has recorded more than 20 LPs and CDs. This is his first classical music CD.
Radosvet (Eti) Kukudov also studied at the State Academy of Music in Sofia completing his Master Degree with Dobri Paliev. He is a laureate of all national competitions for percussion instruments and chamber music. As a timpanist of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, he has toured extensively Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, Greece, and Turkey. He has also recorded as a chamber musician works by contemporary Bulgarian composers.
