Fire and Ice: Love Songs from 16th century Venice

Fire and Ice: Love Songs from 16th century Venice
ID: SIGCD035
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Renaissance

Signum Records is pleased to present the first of a series of three discs by Music Antiqua of London, featuring the music of three Italian cities.

In the late 15th century, Italy was divided between the independence of the mighty Venetian Republic and tiny Dukedoms such as Ferrara and Mantua. Music and literature were patronised by the ruling classes as statements of power and local identity. However the most revered European composers were from the north, and their musical style owed little to Italian culture.

In northern Italy an educated classicist, Isabella Marchioness of Mantua, devised the frottola where text was set to a simple melody following speech rhythms, and accompanied by 2 or 3 instruments. The frottola is a Cinderella of Renaissance song and has suffered in comparison with the English and Italian Madrigal and the French Chanson in the 2oth century revival of interest in Renaissance music.

On Fire and Ice we present frottole taken from a Venetian manuscript, compiled around 1520, to argue the case for a re-evaluation of this repertoire. The collection is notable for the quality of both the poetry and the music. The texts deal frequently with emotional extremes - the “fire and ice” of our title!

Modelled on the court bands of the 16th century, Musica Antiqua is the only group in Great Britain to play on specially commissioned matched sets of viols and recorders, copied from 16th century originals. This CD offers a rare opportunity to hear the very different sound these instruments make compared to their "modern" counterparts from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Disc 1 - The Play's The Thing is a whistle-stop journey, a sampler and guide to 'hearing at the Globe' - words and music combining to tell tales of adrent lovers, noble men, earthy peasants and bitter kings. Audience and actor can be heard together in some rare recordings of live performances from the Globe stage itself.
Disc 2 - Groundlings to Gods assembles a wide range of music from Shakespeare's time. The collection reflects the hierarchy of Elizabethan and Jacobean society, which the Globe's architecture itself embodies - music of the gods, tears of the muses, fanfares for kings and princes, courtly dances, music for banquets, songs, exuberant jibs and bawdy entertainment for taverns and brothels.

William Shakespeare's original playhouse is brought to life on disc with music and words recreating the unique Globe experience. With a wealth of historical fanfares, dances and songs played by the Mucicians of Shakespeare's Globe on period instruments, the company performs material from acclaimed productions including Romeo and Juliet, Richard II, Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure and Much Ado About Nothing.

Les haulz et les bas plays music of the alta capella, the 'loud' wind ensemble of the middle ages and Renaissance. The rediscovery and reconstruction of the music of the mediaeval civic and court wind bands has been one of the great musical detective stories of our times. The results of the ensemble's work has acheived international acclaim: they have won prizes at several international competitions and they are regularly present in Europe’s most prestigious Early Music Festivals. They regularly give lectures and workshops and have been guests of the Universities of Oxford, London and Manchester, the Royal Conservatory, The Hague and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The ensemble has produced a series of highly-acclaimed CDs.
Les haulz et les bas guarantees its audience an extraordinary and unforgettable experience. The ensemble offers a huge range of programmes from the 'classic' trio formation up to big-scale productions for larger venues and outdoor events.

Gesine Bänfer: Schalmei, Pommer, Dudelsack / shawm, bombard, bagpipes
Ian Harrison: Schalmei, Dudelsack / shawm, bagpipes

Michael Metzler: Riq, Davul, Triangel, Glocken, Timpani / riq, davul, triangle, bells, tympani
Andrea Piccioni: Tamburello, Tammorra, Zymbeln / tambourine, tammorra, cymbals

This collection features music from the late Middle Ages using long straight trumpets, shawms, bagpipes and percussion. This type of ensemble came to Europe from the Far and Middle East, along the ancient trade routes. Les Haulz et les Bas is one of Europe’s most active alta capella ensembles. They have given lectures and masterclasses at the Universities of Oxford and London.
