NIGHTINGALES - VASSIL ARNAUDOV - SOFIA CHAMBER CHOIR

NIGHTINGALES - VASSIL ARNAUDOV - SOFIA CHAMBER CHOIR
ID: GD195
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

The CD includes 23 songs performed by the female chamber choir founded in 1966 and bearing the name of the great choral conductor Vassil Arnaudov after his death. A number of the songs have been practised and sung many times under his direction and it is in this sense that the CD is of retrospective and commemorative character. The ensemble demonstrates its great scope of repertoire, performing works from the Renaissance, Classicism, and the 20th century. Many of the works have long become emblematic for the choir. The Vassil Arnaudov Sofia Chamber Choir is also deeply connected with the Bulgarian compositional output. Some of the works have been performed for the first time by the choir.

MUSICA SLAVICA - Neva KRYSTEVA, organ

MUSICA SLAVICA - Neva KRYSTEVA, organ
ID: GD225
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Organ Collection
Subcollection: Organ

The works included in this release form a brief anthology of organ music by Slavic composers. While the organ was quick to establish its overall presence in the Catholic and Protestant liturgical tradition, East Orthodox music rejects the use of instruments in general. This explains the presentation of the early epoch of organ music in this programme by Polish and Czech Slavic composers mainly, who, belonging to the Catholic tradition, took part in the historic development of European music, lending some regional characteristics to it. The organ was introduced into the works of other Slavic composers during the 20th century, mainly in secular music. The selection for the present CD was made by Neva Krysteva, who is Professor of Polyphony at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music, Sofia, a theorist of music, and a composer. Ms. Krysteva has given concerts throughout Europe and Asia. Being a performer of an extensive repertoire, she includes Baroque and Romantic music in her programmes, as well as 20th-century works. A number of compositions have been written especially for her and have been dedicated to her. She is founder of the Bulgarian organ school and many of her students perform throughout the world.

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 1 - IVAN Spassov-PRAYER CHANTS

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 1 - IVAN Spassov-PRAYER CHANTS
ID: GD251
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

Ivan Spassov (1934-1996) belongs to the generation of Bulgarian composers who developed their abilities and won recognition during the 1970s and the 1980s. His work has invariably roused interest although it was not always accepted unanimously, and sometimes was even met with complete negation. Particularly important are the vocal creations of Spassov in which he imposed his own style and compositional techniques. Most of his choral songs became basic repertoire; much of them are examples of innovation in the genre. The CD includes three of Ivan Spassov's last opuses, where the theme of death dominates. Deeply connected with the Bulgarian tradition, yet at the same time employing the avant-guard tendencies of the 1950s and 1960s, Ivan Spassov combined both trends in his music. One example of Bulgarian passion is Easter Music for Christ's Suffering, Death and Resurrection, rationalizing the drama of Christ from the Orthodox point of view. The typical for the Catholic tradition form Miserere was made (for the first time by a Bulgarian musician) into a splendid composition for choir, orchestra and soloists, bringing the meaning and the comfort of the psalm. The excellent recordings in the CD present the spiritual world of an exceptional musician and intellectual, who contributed for throwing a bridge between the Bulgarian and the West-European cultures.

Soloists: Kalina Zhekova (soprano), Georgi Lazarov (bass-baritone), Stepan Byulbyulian (evangelist), Alexandrina Toromanova (organ), Tiha Genova (soprano), Donka Lozanova (soprano), Valeria Mircheva (mezzo-soprano), Lilia Ilieva (mezzo-soprano)
Female Chamber Choir with the Academy of Music and Dance Arts - Plovdiv, Chamber Orchestra with the Secondary School of Music - Plovdiv, Polyphonia Chamber a Cappella Choir, Orchestral Ensemble

Vassil Arnaudov and Sofia Chamber Choir - Bulgarian Composers
ID: GD284
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

The conductor Vassil Arnaudov is an example of high musical culture and mastership in the development of Bulgarian conductor art. Even today, 12 years after his death, we still remember his top achievements. During his creative art he visited many places in Bulgaria so as to help a lot of conductors and choirs. He passed his knowledge with deep love to his students, and a number of them have become famous choir conductors. His greatest achievement is with the Sofia Chamber Choir and the “Rodina” Choir in Rousse. Part of the magnificent performances of the Sofia Chamber Choir have been included in the present release, which is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Vassil Arnaudov’s birth. The programme features Bulgarian composers, whom the conductor had a great respect for. His collaboration with different composers has often provoked the creation of works specially written for the Sofia Chamber Choir. Admirers of choral singing will find some of them in the present release.
