MALE CHOIR OF SVETA NEDELYA CATHEDRAL - SOFIA
ID: GD114
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Sacred Music
Subcollection: Choir

Recorded at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia, in 1999

This is yet another release from the series of Slavonic Orthodox Chants in Gega New's catalogue. The Male Choir of the Sveta Nedelya Cathedral in Sofia is one of the oldest Bulgarian church choirs, whose foundation (1897) and development is associated with the name of the great Bulgarian musician Nikolai Nikolaev. He is one of the founding fathers of musical life in Bulgaria, and is connected with the establishment of some of the first musical institutions in the country. Currently, the choir is directed by Kiril Popov and he has dedicated this programme to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. The release presents chants from the All Night Vigil and the Holy Liturgy, strictly observing the order of performance in the Divine Service used in common practice nowadays. Some of the chants are original works by Petar Dinev and Dobri Hristov (Bulgaria), and by the Russian composers Alexander Grechaninov, Pavel Chesnokov, Ipolitov-Ivanov, etc. The release also includes arrangements made by different musicians throughout the years. The authentic sounding as well as the participation of priests makes this recording invaluable. The performance of the choir has achieved the characteristic emotional and psychological effect resulting from the diction and the manner of sounding.

The conductor has selected nine of the most popular chants for festive services dedicated to Lord Jesus Christ and his sufferings during the last three days of his earthly life. Famous composers of Russian sacred music like Kedrov, Bakhmetiev and Tchaikovsky, as well as the Bulgarian Dobri Hristov, arranged and harmonized the old church motifs, thus turning them into brilliant pieces full of compassion and glorification of Christ's sacrifice. The chants are sung in Church-Slavonic with the fluency and timbre variety characteristic of East-Orthodox music.

The Sofia Boys' Choir is one of the most prestigious Bulgarian choirs of its kind, winner of many awards at international and national competitions. Under the guidance of the talented Adriana Blagoeva, during the past few years the choir has widened the range of its repertoire by including masterpieces of sacred music - both Catholic and Orthodox.
In their present release the Sofia Boys' Choir perform liturgic chants by Bulgarian and Russian composers. Of particular interest for the fans of religious music are the monodic chants - by authors or anonymous, such as Svyatii Boje or Slava Otsu (an old composition by the famous singer and composer John Koukouzeles). The performances are distinguished by the unique beauty of sounds of the boys' voices led by the conductor with great skill. Each song features not only the professionalism of the great choirs, but also precision of dynamics, accents and gradation, typical of religious singing. The singers and their musicality, the perfectly performed tunes, the crystal sounds, as well as the characteristic reverberation of the recordings that recreates the atmosphere in the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral leave a deep impression.

NIGHTINGALES - VASSIL ARNAUDOV - SOFIA CHAMBER CHOIR
ID: GD195
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

The CD includes 23 songs performed by the female chamber choir founded in 1966 and bearing the name of the great choral conductor Vassil Arnaudov after his death. A number of the songs have been practised and sung many times under his direction and it is in this sense that the CD is of retrospective and commemorative character. The ensemble demonstrates its great scope of repertoire, performing works from the Renaissance, Classicism, and the 20th century. Many of the works have long become emblematic for the choir. The Vassil Arnaudov Sofia Chamber Choir is also deeply connected with the Bulgarian compositional output. Some of the works have been performed for the first time by the choir.

Nicola Ghiuselev - Orthodox Chants

Nicola Ghiuselev - Orthodox Chants
ID: GD201
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Sacred Music
Subcollection: Choir

The CD furthers the development of one of the main repertoire trends in the production of Gega New, liturgical music performed by Bulgarian singers and ensembles. At the same time, this is the company's third release of the world-famous Bulgarian opera singer Nicola Ghiuselev. The interpretation of East-Orthodox chants is a sphere which no other Bulgarian singer has dared to approach after the death of Boris Christoff, the great bass. Ghiuselev's success is all the more significant, if we take into consideration the fact that alongside his attitude and musical skills he also demonstrates a deep penetration into the musical and poetic text of the chants. By achieving the sound specific for the genre and giving up the bel canto vocal characteristics Ghiuselev raises up his prayers and glorifies God with all the appropriate reservedness and beauty of the musical line. All chants are by Bulgarian and Russian composers, known for both their church and secular music. Melodic and beautifully harmonized, they render the atmosphere of pious and peaceful resignation. Ghiuselev's bass is in perfect harmony with the resounding sonority of the Sofia Orthodox Choir.

Dimitar Dimitrov, conductor

Gega New Music Company pays special attention to featuring liturgical music in its catalogue. Up to now the company has released a number of recordings with liturgical chants, which are a part of the usual festive liturgies. This is the first complete recording in Bulgaria of the Paschal Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, in observation of the East-Orthodox canon the way it is performed at the St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral, together with the choir performance, chants and the bell chimes of the Cathedral. The St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral was consecrated on September 12, 1924. Three years later (1927) Apostol Nikolaev established the mixed Choir with the Cathedral, which, ever since its foundation, has taken part in all church events and festive liturgies. In 1936, Prof Dobri Hristov, a great Bulgarian composer and conductor, student of Antonin Dvorak at the Prague Conservatory, took the position of conductor. D. Hristov is the author of a number of religious works, most of which were composed especially for the Cathedral's choir and they are still present in its repertoire. After Maestro Dobri Hristov, the choir was conducted in the course of 36 years by Angel Popkonstantinov, and since 1978 his conductor has been Dimitar Dimitrov. He graduated from the ”St. John of Rila” Sofia Ecclesiastic Seminary, the “St. Kliment of Ohrid” Academy of Theology, and the State Academy of Music in Sofia. While a student, in 1967, together with his colleagues from the Academy of Theology, he founded the “St. John Koukouzeles - Angeloglasniyat” Chamber Ensemble, whose conductor he has been ever since. He has been teaching religious music at the Department of Theology with the “St. Kliment Ohridsky” Sofia University and at the “Venerable Paisii of Hilendar” Subsidiary of the Plovdiv University in Kardjali. He also reads lectures in liturgical order at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music. Gega New released the present double CD album with this unique recording to mark the 80th anniversary from the consecration of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The programme is also dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of Christ's Nativity.
