Fusing together an eclectic mix of classical, electronic, jazz and contemporary music, the British duo New Noise was formed at the turn of the millennium by oboist Janey Miller and percussionist Joby Burgess. New Noise has to date commissioned more than fifty pieces, working with a diverse range of artists including David Bedford, Donnacha Dennehy, Sam Hayden, Simon Holt, Katharine Norman, Nigel Osborne, Howard Skempton and Andy Sheppard. They regularly collaborate with sound designer Matthew Fairclough and trombonist John Kenny, and in 2008 brought together a host of international talent to perform 'Cross Talk', originally programmed to celebrate the 80th birthday of Karlheinz Stockhausen. New Noise has performed throughout the UK including many of the country's leading festivals and venues. Further afield they have performed in the United States and Australia, and their recordings are regularly broadcast around the world. Many of New Noise's performances are supported by education events, and the duo regularly lead composition and performance workshops; from 2001 to 2005 New Noise was ensemble in residence at the Goldsmiths College University of London Electronic Music Studios.

Cellist Ulrich Heinen has over the years commissioned solo cello pieces from composers Simon Holt, Howard Skempton, and Gerald Barry. He has performed all of them many times, mostly in conjunction with Bach’s cello suites (as demonstrated here) or in connection with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Also included on this recording are two 20th century “classics” - Hans Werner Henze’s Serenade and Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Sonata.
In order that these modern but very accessible pieces receive exposure to a wider audience, they are presented here with five of the six Bach suites - all played on the same cello (at modern pitch). The sixth and final suite is omitted as that asks for a 5-string cello with a top E-string, and have been performed in this manner by Heinen on many occasions.
Ulrich Heinen came to the UK in 1984 at the request of Sir Simon Rattle to become principal cellist of the CBSO. His formidable technique and musicianship have enabled him to further develop his solo career with numerous recitals, concerts and radio broadcasts. He co-founded the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, which is one of Britain’s most important ensembles for contemporary music.

Over the last three years Holt has revised all of his older piano works, written several new works, and collected a number of them together. He now plans to take a break from piano music for the next few years, while he concentrates on orchestral and music theatre works.
All the works on this disc are premiere recordings.
Rolf Hind’s recording of Holt’s only piano concerto - eco-pavan for piano and ensemble - is on NMCD094 Although Simon Holt is perhaps best known for his ensemble music-notably the NMC CDs by the Nash Ensemble and BCMG-he often refers to himself primarily as a piano composer.
An accomplished keyboard player himself, Holt considers the fourteen piano works written between 1980 and 2005 to be the very core of his output, and perhaps the works closest to his heart.
This CD of his piano music is an important document of his work.

Kolektion: Chamber MusicSubkolektion: Chamber Ensemble

Endymion celebrates its 30th anniversary with a survey of new commissions from composers who have worked with the ensemble, from senior figures in British music - such as Anthony Payne, Simon Bainbridge and Simon Holt, and younger but established talents like Morgan Hayes and Dai Fujikura - to those at an early stage of their career, such as Joanna Bailie, James Weeks and Naomi Pinnock.
Endymion was formed in 1979 from a group of outstanding National Youth Orchestra students and retains most of its original players.
Endymion has been described as one of the few chamber groups as at home with Mozart as with Birtwistle.
Endymion’s Sound Census project has reached beyond the new pieces on this disc, to include primary and secondary school students in the London Boroughs of Westminster, Camden and Tower Hamlets. Seven Alevel and GCSE students created new pieces in close collaboration with Endymion players.
