MARIN GOLEMINOV - Compositions
ID: GD129

Type: CD
Subkolektion: String instruments

The release is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Academician Marin Goleminov, the classic of Bulgarian school of composing. It contains four works among which the String Quartet No 3 "Old-Bulgarian" has been a repertoire work for decades now. Written in the 1940s, it is conceptually related to some of his most famous opuses like the dance drama Nestinarka (The Fire-Dancer) and Symphonic Variations on a Theme by Dobri Hristov. The String Quartet No. 7 is from the 70s and bears the marks of Goleminov's evolution of style. The two concert pieces are from the 80s and were inspired by the art of flutist Simeon Shterev and oboist Georgi Zhelyazov. They demonstrate the virtuoso command of compositional and technique devices, of the orchestral writing, Goleminov's ability to refract elements of the aleatoric and sonata, polyphonic and post-realist music through his outstanding individuality.

Devorina Gamalova was born in Bulgaria in 1965 and studied violin at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia. Later she moved to the UK and studied violin and viola (Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music). Presently she performs as soloist and chamber musician, takes part in the Yehudi Menuhin's Live Music Now Scheme, and teaches violin and viola at South Downs College, Chichester Institute of Higher Education, Goldsmith's College, and Purcell School.
Ruzhka Charakchieva graduated the Music School for Gifted Children in Sofia and the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music. She gave her first recital when she was nine and at eleven she made her concerto debut. She continued her studies in Moscow and Vienna, and was prize-winner at the International Robert Shumann Competition in Germany, the George Enescu Competition in Romania, etc. Along with her work as Professor at the Sofia Academy of Music, she has an active performing career in solo, concerto and chamber music all over the world.
Peter Rhodes studied music at the University of Durham and Jesus College, Cambridge, and later with the great Polish pianist Ryszard Bakst at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In addition to many solo engagements, he has specialised in operatic and instrumental accompaniment, giving major recitals with artists such as Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Benjamin Luxon. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Music at South Down College in Hampshire.
The album also includes the only remaining recording of the Bulgarian violinist Blagorodna Badeva (1963-1995), which was tape-recorded at her home. Despite the lack of orchestral accompaniment and the very limited equipment, her interpretation of Mozart is remarkable.

Gega New Music Company gives a special place in its catalogue to the works of Bulgarian composers. The most famous of them present on the Gega New label are: Pancho Vladigerov, Marin Goleminov, Simeon Pironkov, Dimitar Tapkoff, Lazar Nikolov, etc. Many of them create their works especially for some of Bulgaria's leading musicians. One of the artists preferred by many composers is the cello player Anatoli Krastev, who has an active concert-giving carrier and has been soloist of all Bulgarian and a number of European and American leading orchestras. He has made a great number of recordings in Bulgaria and abroad, and is also member of the jury of prestigious international festivals. Currently, he is Professor at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia and has directed master classes in the UK, France, Belgium, Greece, Brazil, etc. The release 20th Century Bulgarian Music for Cello Solo includes a part of the great number of works for cello solo written by Bulgarian composers of different generations. The CD is thus a kind of encyclopedia of styles, genres and ways of interpretation of the instrument, and also presents the development of the Bulgarian cello school.
