New Noise has to date commissioned more than fifty pieces, working with a diverse range of artists including David Bedford, Donnacha Dennehy, Sam Hayden, Simon Holt, Katharine Norman, Nigel Osborne, Howard Skempton and Andy Sheppard. They regularly collaborate with sound designer Matthew Fairclough and trombonist John Kenny, and in 2008 brought together a host of international talent to perform 'Cross Talk', originally programmed to celebrate the 80th birthday of Karlheinz Stockhausen. New Noise has performed throughout the UK including many of the country's leading festivals and venues. Further afield they have performed in the United States and Australia, and their recordings are regularly broadcast around the world. Many of New Noise's performances are supported by education events, and the duo regularly lead composition and performance workshops; from 2001 to 2005 New Noise was ensemble in residence at the Goldsmiths College University of London Electronic Music Studios.

The Song of Songs stands apart from its biblical surroundings as one of the supreme love poems of world literature, a celebration of erotic love in the form of a dialogue between a bridegroom and his bride, invoking all the senses, the fragrance of wine, blossom, fruits and spices. Ranging widely over five centuries, from the relative asperity of Dunstaple to the lush exoticism of Daniel-Lesur, this cherry-picked assortment of sweetmeats is given exultant life by Mike Brewer and Laudibus.

Choral settings of Scottish poetry from Robert Burns to Alexander McCall Smith

These collaborations between noted 'Edinburghians' Alexander McCall Smith and Tom Cunningham appear on disc here for the first time, in a programme of Scottish poetry settings by some of today's leading composers. From the ethereal tenderness of Cunningham's Lullaby to the muscular angularity of Ronald Stevenson's Medieval Scottish Triptych, Laudibus responds with affection and athleticism to the expert direction of UK choral doyen, Mike Brewer.

Producer’s note: “It was not so sunny when we recorded Scotland at Night…On 3-5 January whilst Laudibus was in Colinton Parish Church in Edinburgh to record this collection, the boiler gave out! Anyway, I offered as much support to the ever-spirited Mike & his crew as I could from the Minister's office (things are quite plush in Colinton, and thankfully the heating system in the Minister's suite runs off a newer-fangled & more efficient boiler!). You would never know that these lush sounds were recorded in a sub-freezing environment!” Paul Baxter

A significant Christmas release: Geoffrey Webber has put together a fantastic programme which Delphian had fun recording in the glorious acoustics of St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast. Fresh from their 2009 Gramophone Editor's Choice, Webber's choir has put together an intriguing programme in which medieval works illuminate contemporary settings by some of the UK's finest living composers. From the plangent innocence of Sweeney's The Innumerable Christ to the shining antiphony of Burrell's Creator of the Stars of Night, this selection will seduce. Caius, as we've come to expect, combine polish with verve, Webber's meticulous attention to detail floodlit by the bathing acoustics of St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast.

This ‘songbook’ is unique to the Schola Cantorum choristers of Tewkesbury Abbey. “Essentially, it's a showcase for the Abbey trebles,” their Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas explains. “We’ve been assembling our own Songbook for quite a while now - the songs the trebles sing, from time to time, in boys-only concerts, and that they are taught in individual singing lessons. I’ve always been keen to build each boy up as a soloist, not necessarily with the express idea of them singing lots of solos, but so that they can learn to sing in a soloistic way.”

This is evident most of all in the distinctive singing of 11- year-old Laurence Kilsby, whose gifts won him the BBC Chorister of the Year competition in 2009. On this recording, he features as soloist in two Shelley settings by Roger Quilter, the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria and in John Ireland’s beautiful, sincerely-felt Passiontide motet Ex Ore Innocentium from 1944.

Choir of Merton College, Oxford
Peter Phillips & Benjamin Nicholas conductors
Anna Steppler organ

The beginning of Advent is celebrated with a particular solemnity at Merton. For its second recording the college choir explores the musical riches that adorn this most special time in the church’s year, centring on a newly commissioned sequence of Magnificat antiphons from seven leading composers.

Founded in 2008, the new Choir of Merton College, Oxford is led by newly appointed Organist and fulltime Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas, and Reed Rubin Director of Music Peter Philips. The choir is rapidly emerging as a major force in collegiate choral music. The disc is recorded in the beautiful environs of Merton College Chapel, which has stood at the heart of the College as a place of worship for almost 750 years.

Cellist Ulrich Heinen has over the years commissioned solo cello pieces from composers Simon Holt, Howard Skempton, and Gerald Barry. He has performed all of them many times, mostly in conjunction with Bach’s cello suites (as demonstrated here) or in connection with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Also included on this recording are two 20th century “classics” - Hans Werner Henze’s Serenade and Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Sonata.
In order that these modern but very accessible pieces receive exposure to a wider audience, they are presented here with five of the six Bach suites - all played on the same cello (at modern pitch). The sixth and final suite is omitted as that asks for a 5-string cello with a top E-string, and have been performed in this manner by Heinen on many occasions.
Ulrich Heinen came to the UK in 1984 at the request of Sir Simon Rattle to become principal cellist of the CBSO. His formidable technique and musicianship have enabled him to further develop his solo career with numerous recitals, concerts and radio broadcasts. He co-founded the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, which is one of Britain’s most important ensembles for contemporary music.

Works for oboe and strings (either string trio or quartet) form a considerable part of the oboe's historic repertoire. Works first appeared in the 1750s and by the 1770s were very popular. Over 100 works survive from this period; the most famous being the Mozart Oboe Quartet in F K370. It is not, however, until the 20th century that works are once again written for this ensemble, many for the renowned British oboists Leon Goossens and Janet Craxton. Surrounding these figures a substantial body of music for oboe and string trio or quartet has been written, the most well known work being Britten’s Phantasy Quartet op 2. The works for oboe and strings represented on this CD, while in many ways being part of this great tradition, offer significantly different ways of writing for the ensemble; taking different compositional and stylistic approaches to the music and particularly in their writing for the oboe. These various approaches demonstrate the potential of this medium; its artistic and aesthetic range. Of the other three works, Finnissy’s two pieces present the oboe as a soloist with an ensemble accompaniment and Redgate’s Éperons for oboe and one percussionist offers a different approach to writing for the instrument in a chamber music setting. Since his time as a student at the Royal Academy of Music, Christopher Redgate has specialised in the performance of contemporary oboe music. This specialisation has inspired many composers to write for him and as a result he has given premiere performances of a great number of works. His performing career has taken him all over the world, working as a soloist and in many ensembles. His performances frequently include the use of electronics and especially of the laptop computer and for many years now he has been including improvisation as a significant part of his recitals. He has been active as a teacher both of oboe and in workshops for composers. He broadcasts regularly for BBC R3 and has several solo CDs available. He has recently contributed three articles to an edition of Contemporary Music Review, is working on a book on the interpretation of contemporary oboe music and contributing a chapter in a new book on the music of Michael Finnissy.

New French Song has created a whole new repertoire of songs by British composers. The artists commissioned twenty exceptional British composers, some of whom were well established, others of whom were yet to receive the recognition they deserve. The composers were asked to set French literature of their choice from the past two hundred years. The result is a fascinating rainbow work covering all the major literary movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, overlapping into the twenty-first century - Romanticism, Symbolism, Surrealism, Cubism, Modernism and post-Modernism.
