The programme features recordings of three works by Schubert and Brahms performed by the well-known Bulgarian musicians Georgi Badev and Bojidar Noev. Georgi Badev, who usually plays the violin, is occasionally tempted to play the viola. The musical instrument has been specially made for him by Bulgaria's most famous violin and viola maker and its sound is of highly satisfactory quality. Franz Schubert's masterpiece Sonata "Arpeggione" is a challenge for all artists who venture to perform this work of the early German Romanticism. The duo's interpretation of the piece is strikingly moving and filled with melody, harmonic beauty and virtuosity. It carries the spirit of the age of Classicism, which Schubert was so fond of. The fifth disc of the series continues that trend of presenting world-famous classical works, loved by many generations of classical music admirers. The four programs released up to now (vol. 1 - GD 245, vol. 2 - GD 246, vol. 3 - GD 247, vol. 4 - GD 256) feature great works of the 18th, 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This release also includes a long period in time, which is another proof that the different aesthetic visions of the composers and their various stylistic means of expression do not oppose them to each other, but rather unite them by the eternal value of their work.
The “Masters of Classical Music” series has had great success with the listeners and this is due especially to the Bulgarian conductor Vassil Kazandjiev. Diliana Momtchilova and Lora Tchekoratova have recorded a very interesting programme. They have chosen famous virtuosic works, some of them composed initially for violin and guitar (piano) - Paganini’s Variations, or for violin and piano - Vladigerov’s Song (actually this is the second part of Bulgarian Suite for orchestra, which was later arranged for violin and piano), or for the six-stringed instrument arpeggione - Schubert’s Sonata. The other two compositions are the original versions for cello and piano. When writing the title to his work, Brahms intentionally puts the piano before the cello, thus stressing on the equal role of the piano instrument.
Diliana Momtchilova and Lora Tchekoratova were born in Sofia. They both received their high-school education at the Lyubomir Pipkov National Music School in Sofia. In Bulgaria they studied with eminent teachers and after that they continued their studies at the Juilliard School in the USA.
Diliana Momtchilova holds Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School. Her principal teachers in New York were Zara Nelsova and Harvey Shapiro. She has participated in master classes led by Janos Starker, Julius Berger, Angelica May, and the Principal cellists of the New York Philharmonic Carter Brey, and Lorne Monroe.
Lora Tchekoratova, as a student of Seymour Lipkin, earned Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Musical Arts Degrees thus becoming the first Bulgarian musician to hold a Doctorate from Juilliard.
Both performers have won many awards at prestigious international competitions. They perform in famous venues in the USA and Europe as soloists and chamber musicians, as well as with symphony orchestras. |
