SIMEON PIRONKOV - COMPOSITIONS

SIMEON PIRONKOV - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD160
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

Simeon Pironkov ranks among the most famous Bulgarian composers from the second half of the 20th century. His works in various genres are performed both at home and at prestigious musical festivals for contemporary music in Berlin, Warsaw, Zagreb, Budapest, etc. He is the author of compositions commissioned by full orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo performers. Pironkov's style is characterised by exquisitely coloured melody, flexibility of metre and rhythm influenced by the Bulgarian folk music, delicacy of orchestration and emotional variety, being the result of the sensitivity and richness of his inner world. The works selected for this release represent the evolution of the composer's style. Requiem for an Unknown Young Man is a landmark work in his creative biography, extensively performed by the Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble. The solo cello sonata Entrata e capriccio is an original virtuoso improvisation with an excellent form, and the music of String Quartet No. 3 (premiered in 1986 in Berlin) is reserved, now tender, now melancholic, cut through by metro-rhythmical and melancholic accents. Most characteristic is Kammersinfonie for 11 soloists, composed in the USA, an expression of maturity and creative imagination.

Performed by: String Quartet: N. Jeleva (violin), N. Gagov (violin), O. Stanchev (viola), K. Bespalov (cello) [1] - [3]; Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble conductor Plamen Djouroff [4]; Anatoli Krastev (cello) [5] - [6]; conductor Simeon Pironkov - junior [7] - [11]

Dimitar Tapkoff was born in Sofia in 1929. He graduated in composition under the great Bulgarian composer Marin Goleminov. He has worked in succession in the Bulgarian National Radio, Sofia National Opera, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the State Academy of Music, the Ministry of Culture. Currently he is Professor in composition at the Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv, and Director of the Sofia Music Weeks International Music Festival.
Tapkoff began writing music when the post-war avant-guard was fully embraced by a part of the Bulgarian composers, while others supported the national art, and still others followed the traditions of classical "modern". He is closest to the third group and admits that: "I would not say that I am a champion of a modern concept about music. I claim that I stand behind a music concept of my own, no matter what the fashionable trends are." He has always stressed on the possibility to use well-known structures and forms, at the same time incorporating music, which is close to the contemporary listener. His works have often been performed in Bulgaria and abroad. Tapkoff is holder of a number of home and international distinctions, among which the First Prize of the International Composer's Rostrum in Paris '76 for his Peace Cantata. He has composed works in different genres: concertos, overtures, symphonies, solo and choir songs, etc.

Gega New Music Company gives a special place in its catalogue to the works of Bulgarian composers. The most famous of them present on the Gega New label are: Pancho Vladigerov, Marin Goleminov, Simeon Pironkov, Dimitar Tapkoff, Lazar Nikolov, etc. Many of them create their works especially for some of Bulgaria's leading musicians. One of the artists preferred by many composers is the cello player Anatoli Krastev, who has an active concert-giving carrier and has been soloist of all Bulgarian and a number of European and American leading orchestras. He has made a great number of recordings in Bulgaria and abroad, and is also member of the jury of prestigious international festivals. Currently, he is Professor at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia and has directed master classes in the UK, France, Belgium, Greece, Brazil, etc. The release 20th Century Bulgarian Music for Cello Solo includes a part of the great number of works for cello solo written by Bulgarian composers of different generations. The CD is thus a kind of encyclopedia of styles, genres and ways of interpretation of the instrument, and also presents the development of the Bulgarian cello school.
