BELA BARTOK - Concerto for viola and orchestra.
ID: GD306
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subkolektion: Viola

The Bulgarian violist Dimitar Penkov, who has lived in Germany for a number of years, again presents an interesting program. For his two previous CDs on the Gega New label he recorded Jean-Marie Leclaire’s 6 sonatas for two violas, performed together with Johannes Flieder (GD 212) and the concertos for viola and orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki and Karl Stamitz (GD 250). The present program features two concertos, which are representative of the music of the 20th century. Both works were written at the end of the composers’ lives and both were dedicated to legendary violists - Bartok wrote his concerto commissioned by William Primrose, while Schnittke kept a promise he had given Juri Bashmet nine years earlier. The premieres of the works were outstanding events among music circles at that time. Dimitar Penkov continuously proves his skill at performing difficult works. His interpretation of the Honegger sonata for viola and piano was the first studio recording of this work. He also performed the French premiere of Penderecki’s viola concerto. During his career Dimitar Penkov has performed under the batons of such notable conductors as Aldo Cecatto, Pierre Bartholomee, Vassil Stefanov, Vassil Kazandjiev, Lutz Herbig, Gilbert Varga, Konstantin Iliev, Anthony Bramall, Michael Tabachnik, Nikos Athineos, Otmar Maga, and Plamen Djouroff. He has realized numerous recordings for the radios of Paris, Sofia, Zurich, and Hannover. Two films produced by Bulgarian National Television document the instrumental art of Dimitar Penkov. The conductor Nikos Athineos studied at the Athens Conservatory, the Cologne Hochschule fur Musik and the Robert Schumann Institute in Dusseldorf. He has toured throughout Germany, Spain, Russia, Lithuania, Israel, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. As a guest conductor he has appeared with various major European orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Prague Gustav Mahler Orchestra, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio. The Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most respected ensembles. The orchestra was founded by its chief conductor of more than thirty years, Vassil Stefanov. Other chief conductors have included Alexander Vladigerov, Vassil Kazandjiev, Ruslan Raichev, Milen Nachev. The orchestra is now led by Rossen Milanov.

The fifth disc of the series continues that trend of presenting world-famous classical works, loved by many generations of classical music admirers. The four programs released up to now (vol. 1 - GD 245, vol. 2 - GD 246, vol. 3 - GD 247, vol. 4 - GD 256) feature great works of the 18th, 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This release also includes a long period in time, which is another proof that the different aesthetic visions of the composers and their various stylistic means of expression do not oppose them to each other, but rather unite them by the eternal value of their work.
The “Masters of Classical Music” series has had great success with the listeners and this is due especially to the Bulgarian conductor Vassil Kazandjiev. He offers a precise interpretation of the works, and an exceptional knowledge of the epoch and style of the composers. The viola player Dimitar Penkov also participates in the program. He is a world-renowned artist, lives in Germany and concertizes in many countries throughout the world.

JEAN-MARIE LECLAIR - Six sonatas for Two Violas, Op.12 - Dimitar Penkov & Johannes Flieder

JEAN-MARIE LECLAIR - Six sonatas for Two Violas, Op.12 - Dimitar Penkov & Johannes Flieder

The CD includes the sonatas for two violas by the French composer Jean-Marie Leclair. It reveals the wealth and the unique beauty of the viola art from the age of the French Classicism. As it happened often during this period, Leclair began his artistic career as a ballet-dancer in France and Italy. Simultaneously with the dance he practised the violin and became a famous violinist, member of the Royal String Orchestra and author of a number of compositions for stringed instruments. The recorded 6 sonatas were created in the late 1740s in Paris. They are magnificent works which give a right idea of the development of the performing art of the above-mentioned period and impress with their melodic inventiveness and virtuosity. Composed as a three- or four-movement sonata cycle, they combine features of the Baroque polyphonic way of thinking with exquisite interweaving of the voices and distinctly expressed harmonic texture. The specific steadiness and contrast, characteristic of the Classicism, have a particularly great emotional impact on the audience. The music radiates calmness and attracts not only with its melodiousness but with its elegance too. The performance of the violists Johannes Flieder (violist-soloist since 1980 of the Viennese symphonic orchestra) and the Bulgarian Dimitar Penkov (who in 1983 settled in Hannover and gives concerts throughout Europe) without doubt is an example for interpreting this kind of music. The two musicians play on splendid instruments made by great masters. Violists of highest level, Flieder and Penkov have penetrated deep into the style and content of the compositions. They achieve complete creative synchrony and lead their parts skillfully transforming them into garlands of melodies, which radiate a true esthetic pleasure.

STAMITZ PENDERECKI - Viola Concertos - Dimitar Penkov, viola

Concerto per viola ed orchestra, NDR Orchestra, Aldo Ceccato, conductor

There are two centuries that separate the composers included in this release - Karl Philipp Stamitz (1745-1801) and Krzystof Penderecki (1933). Living in two different epochs, their works reflect not only the development of music, but also the history of the viola concerto. Stamitz' Konzert D Dur for Viola and Orchestra was composed when the genre was still in its early stage, the interest in the instrument itself was quite lively and its technical means and expressive resources provoked the curiosity of the composers. When Penderecki wrote Concerto per viola ed orchestra, the viola had long since established itself in the composers' practice. The idea of combining the two composers is very interesting and requires incredible artistic mastership.
The two concertos have been recorded by the talented Bulgarian viola player Dimitar Penkov. Having graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia, he is laureate of a number of prestigious international competitions. He specialized with Prof. Yfrah Neaman in London and has enjoyed a successful performing career working with conductors like Pierre Bartholomee, Michael Tabachnik, Aldo Ceccato, Gilbert Varga, Vassil Kazandjiev, Konstantin Iliev, Alexander Vladigerov and others. Accepting the invitation of Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Bartholomee, he made a premire performance of Penderecki's viola concerto in France, which was recorded live by Radio Paris (1985). Since 1983 he has been living in Hanover, Germany.
