The famous Italian composer, conductor, critic and pedagogue Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968) is almost unknown in Bulgaria. He worked as a conductor in Parma, Florence and was Director of the Milan Conservatoire and teacher in composition at the St. Cecilia Academy in Rome. He was also a music critic for leading newspapers and wrote essays for various specialised books and magazines. Parallel to that he wrote a number of works in different genres - operas, ballets, oratorios, symphonies, a wide range of chamber music, choral music and film music. The compositions included in the present programme of Seeli Toivio and Ivo Varbanov were written during the 1920s. This release is the world premiere of both these works.
Seeli Toivio was born in Finland. She studied in Helsinki, Budapest and London with well-known teachers. She has taken part in masterclasses with Gary Hoffmann, William Pleeth, Steven Isserlis, Steven Doane, Zara Nelsova, and Ralph Kirshbaum. She won 1st prize in BBC Radio 2 Young Musician of the Year 1997, and 1st place with a special prize in duo with Ivo Varbanov at the 25th International Chamber Music Competition - Finale Ligure (Italy), in 1998. During 2003-2004 she was invited to perform in Russia, Japan, Germany, Estonia, and Finland.

He was winner of 1st place, and a special prize in cello/piano duo with the cellist Seeli Toivio at the 25th International Chamber Music Competition Finale Ligure (Italy) in 1998. Mr. Varbanov has travelled widely, playing concertos and giving recitals and chamber music concerts in Bulgaria, Italy, the UK, France, Ireland, Germany, Holland, Poland, Russia, and the USA. Since the age of nine, Ivo Varbanov (b. 1972) has been living and performing mainly abroad, in Milan and London, at The Royal Academy of Music, where he specialised on a grant by the Rotary Foundation (USA). He has given concerts in many countries throughout Europe. For his Bulgarian CD the pianist has chosen various pieces of Mussorgsky, as well as his masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition. This work not only poses to the performer various difficulties with respect to technique and interpretation, but it requires a truthful rendition of the great Russian composer's unique style, a thorough understanding of the work's rich and vivid imagery, together with an ability to construct a monumental cycle serving as points of support to the overall structure. The listener will feel the scope of Varbanov's performance who is beyond doubt a talented pianist with brilliant technique who has probed deeply in Mussorgsky's style.

Voland Quartet presents a very interesting program. The works included were created during the last 70 years and they show some trends in the development of 20th and 21st century music. Of special interest is the combination of two pianos with the timbre variety of the different percussion instruments. The four musicians are renowned solo performers, but in the present recordings they have achieved an amazing ensemble performance.
Ivo Varbanov was born in Bulgaria and received his music education in Italy and the UK, having studied with famous piano teachers. He has performed in important venues such as Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, S. John’s Smiths Square in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and Bulgaria Concert Hall in Sofia. Gega New has published two CDs of the musician: the first one containing works for piano by Mussorgsky (GD 117) and the second - works for cello and piano by Pizzetti, recorded together with the cello player Seeli Toivio (GD 275).

He has played extensively as a soloist and chamber musician in most of the European countries in important festivals and venues. He has particular affinity to19th and 20th century music, which is evident in his performance in this program.
